Due to the great discussion the Dakka community has had in my "Best RTS of all time" thread. (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/384480.page) I've been inspired to hear what fellow Dakka members think about one of the most popular genres in gaming, the First Person Shooter.

List your top 10 FPS games in order from which you believe are the greatest of all time in order. My top 10 is based off of legacy, sales and most importantly, innovation.

Here is my top 10:
1. Halo 2 (Xbox, PC)
2. Goldeneye (N64)
3. Counter Strike (PC, Xbox)
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
5. Half-Life (PC)
6. Doom (PC, XBL, PSN, iPhone)
7. Bioshock (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)
8. Half-Life 2 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)
9. Halo Combat Evolved (PC, Xbox)
10. Quake (PC)

My honarble mentions:
- Call of Duty 1
- Call of Duty 2
- Wolfenstein 3D
- Perfect Dark
- Unreal Tournament
- Quake II
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
- Halo 3
- Killzone 1

Please lets not hate on each other Dakkaknights! This is a discussion and people have varying opinions!

Counter Strike is good, but I liked the weapon selection, gear selection, and team selection in the original Tom Clancy on the PC.

Doom
Blood
Duke Nukem 3d
Bioshock
System Shock
Half-Life
Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare
Halo
Painkiller
Goldeneye

To me counter strike was a decent fps at a time when there were no decent fps's. Nothing revolutionary.

Edit - Wow how did I forget goldeneye

I liked it, it wasn't the best looking game, but its wasn't terrible, I've certainly played worse.

I saw it similar to Doom, not pretty to look at, but you could chuck it on and run round the levels blasting at anything that moved, and it was set in the 40K universe.

Well, "wasn't terrible" isn't a good reason to put it on a list of the best FPS games of all time, but oh well.

@ TrollPie - Different strokes I guess, although my list is my call, the fact I don't like modern setting shooters probably doesn't help with my choices.

Never tried Half Life, didn't like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, missed Quake.. starts to limit your choices.

Hell thinking on it Mass Effect 2 should be in there, its pratically a fps now, from what I'm reading ME3 is pretty much going to be, with story and RPG elements.

I wish I could count Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, as I believe they will be EPIC. But there's no way to know until later this fall.

Oh, man. Let's see.

I'll list ten, in no particular order, since I can't really rank them. I'm gonna cheat a little and list certain games and their sequels as one choice if the sequels are similar enough to the original.

Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and the episodes
Bioshock & Bioshock 2
Doom & Doom II
Quake
Quake II
F.E.A.R.
Team Fortress 2
Counter-Strike
Duke Nukem 3D
Goldeneye

I'll probably think of another game that likely deserves a spot later and then struggle to determine which game, if any, it should replace.

EDIT: Yep, Doom 3 totally deserves a spot up there, but I can't think of which game to remove from the list. Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. are the only FPS games that were actually even a little scary.

Yeah, replace system shock with undying on my list. The way the galzabar stone worked was brilliant. Also...

Ishmeal (very sure that's wrong) chasing you through the house with his skinless body and hooks.

And the most memorable video game qoute...
