Goldeneye... opened a whole new world, imo.

I don't know if it counts, but the Descent series for the computer are my favorite game of all time... flying instead of walking, but such fantastic multiplayer!

The only current game I play is Halo... I would put the original somewhere in the top 5.

Top ten

1. Goldeneye (64)
2. Dark Forces (PC)
3. Blood (PC)
4. Half Life + Sequels (PC)
5. Deus Ex (PC)
6. Battlefield 1942 (PC)
7. Quake and sequels (PC)
8. System shock and Sequel (PC)
9. Duke Nukem 3d (PC)
10. Team Fortress Classic

Don't like doom, I'm sorry, but that copied Wolfenstein 3d. Halo is a mediocre game at best, overfranchised and overhyped.

For me, nothing could beat the 64-man servers of BF1942, and then BF2. Nothing like running around great big maps with tanks, planes, helicopters, etc., and still having plenty of infantry in the fight as well.

We're only including FPS, not 3PS, right? Red Faction Guerrilla and Space Marine are both rather fun shooters, but not strictly what I'd call first person.

Maybe do a seperate one for 3ps? though pure 3ps is quite rare actually.

It's more common these days. Just Cause, Army of Two, Gears of War, RF:Guerrilla, Space Marine, etc.

I dont think space marine is "pure" fps, you go into 1st person for the lascannon and stalker bolter.

The undisputed king of FPS gaming.

I dispute it quite heavily. Was a definite fan of it during the beta stages, but once it hit 1.0 it went downhill so fast, making it one of my least favorite FPS games of all time.

Day of Defeat was much better.

Anyways, the Halo series is, for me anyways, the best FPS game/series closely followed by Tribes 1, Battlefield 2 and 2142. Also, may not be popular for it, but CoD 1 and 2 were the best of the CoD series (although the AC130 mission did come close to topping them, the rest of the uber grim dark campaign was a turn off though, as was the constant swearing)

Descent Freespace 1 and 2 is possibly my all time most favorite game/series, along with Wing Commander 1, 2, Prophecy.

Best FPS of all time has to be Goldeneye. It set the standard for everything else. The Halo series is an overrated, overhyped, mediocre franchise that was only successful because it was the flagship game for Microsoft's flagship venture into the world of consoles.

lol, goldeneye.

Goldeneye didn't set any standard for anything but console games.

Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but there were better games from that time period. Heck, I'd pick Perfect Dark over it any day.

.... Is sad in his heart that only 2 people have mentioned the Tribes franchise.

I'd post my favorite FPS's, but the list will be rendered irrelevant when the new XCOM hits and changes everything.
..... That started out as a joke, but now I just want to cry.

As games responsible for the evolution of the genre:

1. Wolfenstein (cause it is the first FPS without which the others would not exist)
2. Doom (Multiplayer)
3. 007 Goldeneye (subtle innovations)
4. Halo Combat Evolved (cumulation of the genre into a standard format)

I will point out that Goldeneye in fact did innovate not just on consoles but on PC. It's the first game with hit boxes, now the bread and butter of FPS games. PC gamers regularly like to pretend that advances in console gaming have had no effect on them, which isn't true. Numerous subtle things from Goldeneye besides the hitboxes became regular on the PC (sniper rifles with zoom, relatively large expansive maps). Halo's model of an FPS is currently the standard model all most all FPS games imitate whether their on PC or Console. Apparently if an FPS didn't use a mouse and keyboard some people think its never meant anything.

Battlefield Bad Company 2(multiplayer, campaign was very dull)
