Subject: Bugeater GT 2012: June 1st-3rd Omaha, NE - SOLD OUT! Wait list is available!
|
 |
Death-Dealing Devastator
Omaha, NE
|
Come to the Second Annual Bugeater GT June 1st-3rd in Omaha, NE
Registration is now available!
http://gt.bugeatergames.com
We are sold out, but you can email RoyersT@gmail.com to get on the waitlist for 40k or fantasy.
We can officially announce the 2nd ever Bugeater GT. This year it will be held on June 1st-3rd (off the College World Series, yay!) at Millard West High School in Omaha, NE. The Grand Tournament is not only an awesome weekend of gaming, but it is also a fundraiser for the debate team that I help coach. Last year's Bugeater raised over $3,000 for the program ... yet we still managed to give away thousands of dollars in prizes!
There's still much to be decided/announced, but here are some basics and reasons why you need to come:
1. We will use the NOVA style missions and format again, and both champions will be invited to the NOVA Invitational.
2. Our cost is low at $52. That's for three days of gaming, and a swag bag, access to the Golden Gobbo painting competition, and a chance at over a dozen prizes for fantasy and 40k each. This is possible because we get access to the facilities for free in exchange for donating money to the debate program.
3. We will again have thousands of dollars to give away in swag bags, raffles between the rounds, and prizes for award winners.
4. All 40k players will get 6 rounds, and fantasy players will get 5 rounds.
5. We have spots for 64 40k players and 48 fantasy players, but that is only our initial billing. We have the room and materials to expand our slots as necessary. Based on feedback from last year, we anticipate filling these spots, since we had 80 competitors last year, having over 100 total is nearly a certainty.
6. We now have a year under our belt, and if you're looking for some diverse competition this is your GT. We are the only GT in a 400 mile radius, and last year we had people come in from 11 different states from Wyoming to Texas to Louisiana in addition to the states in our region. We're a 2 hour drive from Des Moines, 3 hours from KC, and only 6 from the Twin Cities.
7. We have awesome concessions at the tournament. The debate kids and staff run the concessions, and in addition to lunch you can get at the tournament site, they will come around to your game tables and take orders for pop, candy, chips, etc. while you're playing. That's service!
The primer packet will be out soon for you to look at, because a local RTT - the Khornehusker - will be used to test some scenario tweaks.
If you've never heard of the Bugeater GT...
I think we ran a pretty good event last year, but I'll let the people who came last year tell it to you. Here are some reviews to look over:
Hulksmash's review
Xaereth's review
Inquistor Dunn's archived review posts
There are others as well, but those are the three that had the most info that I recall.
I went last year, what will be different?
If you want to look at what we're considering changing/fixing, here was my post from June about our lessons learned:

This was a great event last year. I'm down to rock this out again. Are you guys tweaking the schedule for 4 games on day one and 2 games on day two to make it easier on the people coming in from out of town?

Absolutely. Our top two scheduling priorities are to make it 4 rounds Sat 2 rounds Sun for 40k, and to up the fantasy time limit to 2 1/2 hours.

Sweet! I just put my pre reg in. I liked where the hotel was last year, so get a room block there again if possible. Go for cheaper if you can though.
Are you staying at 1850 or going to 1750 like the Khornehusker? Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey, make sure to use extra tables for people to put their armies on off board. I like the 4 saturday and 2 on sunday schedule! Good to see you are alive Tim!

@Enslaviour: Thanks man, that's much appreciated!
@Inquisitor: The Khornehusker is kind of our test bed. We're trying 1750 and some missions tweaks there before we put out the primer packet and make a decision.
And we'll definitely have either longer tables, or adjacent small tables to put armies on.
@Hulk - The only other big thing I remember was balancing out the deployment types and making sure there's an even distribution of primary/sec/tertiary objectives (we only had 1 scenario where quarters were primary), and avoiding back-to-back mission types (we had back to back primary KPs last year). Those are easy fixes that we plan on implementing.

I like 1850 better for GTs. 1750 is good for RTT where you only have one day. I think you could easily go 2.5 hours with 1850. 4 games on Saturday and 2 on Sunday would be a great format. Heck you could get full games of 2000 points in at 2.5 hour games. My 2 cents.

Fair enough - we're not inclined to reduce points right now, but we were willing to see how it changed the dynamic.
Also - 20% of our spots are pre-registered now. Oh, and over half of those who signed up DIDN'T attend the Bugeater last year. A promising start to our preparation.

I had a great time at the tournament and would really encourage you to stay at 1850 or go to 2000. The idea of driving up from KC to play 1750 doesn't really appeal to me. Just my 2 cents. I am now pre-registered.

We will probably be trying to make the trek down this year as well.
1750 is actually pretty solid, having played it at the Nova Invitational.

I generally prefer 1,850-2k. I find 1750 to be the worst of the point values. I find even 1,500 is better than 1,750

I think you can pretty much lock the point value in at 1850. I find it has the least opposition, and seems to be an acceptable middle ground for those that like 2000 or 1500 point games.
The Khornehusker is 1750 because it was 1500 last year, and they're trying to raise the points value to be closer to the Bugeater. For those of you wondering what the Khornehusker is - it's an RTT we run in October here in Omaha, and this year we're using it to test out the 2012 scenario pack for the Bugeater (with some tweaks to fit the 3 game RTT format, obviously). If you're interested in attending that, send me a PM.

I'm cool with 1850. I would like to see time limits increased to 2.5.
Another thought, if you are doing a 4 game sat, and 2 game sunday, you could hold alot of the drawings on sunday. You would have more time at lunch or something to do it.

We didn't really get any feedback indicated that 2 hr 15 min was too short of time, but that's something we can look into. We'll do some test run weekends at my house in the spring, and that can be something we watch out for.
25% of our spots are pre-registered now, and we have a ton of people that didn't go last year (over 60% of our sign ups now didn't attend last year). Keep signing it up, it helps us out in securing sponsorships .
Edit: Forgot to mention we got copies of Space Hulk and Dreadfleet to give away - new, never opened, blah blah blah. So fans of specialist games who want a shot at the raffle, we've got 'em!

Food for though for 40k players: we're moving from a 3-3 schedule (3 rounds on each day) to a 4-2 schedule to accommodate out of town travelers, but how that 4 round day will look is still up in the air. I posted two potential schedules on the blog here: http://www.bugeatergames.com/?p=515. Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Also - nearly 1/2 our spots are pre-registered, and over half of the people signed up didn't go to last year's Bugeater!

Hey Tim. I would love to attend this event but given my profession it is too far in advance to try and sign up for it. If need be would I be able to pre-register and withdraw later if I have training that comes up?
Also a side note: Do you know if any of the guys from Omaha are heading to MN this next week for the ard boyz? I also prefer 1850 over even 2k for tournaments. That or 1500. I literally cant stand 1750 for some reason lol.

No clue on the 'Ard Boyz, I don't talk with the Game Shoppe folks on a regular basis unfortunately.
And to answer your main question - there is no commitment to pre-registration. It is simply holding your place in line. If you can't go - you lose your guaranteed spot for a ticket is all.

Cool sounds good! You all should consider something for Friday maybe a small double's tournament or something just for fun and a chance for players to do a meet and greet before the GT. Lets people get to know their opponents a lot better.

I think Tim is working on something for Friday night. He mentioned something about it at the Khornehusker RTT, possibly being at the hotel were the room block will be or at the high school. If nothing gets ran, a large group of us already planning on staying at the hotel are going to plan something. Minimum being a meet and greet at the hotel bar!

Hey everyone, tickets are now on sale for the Bugeater GT!
You can read more about it and purchase your ticket here: http://gt.bugeatergames.com/
Big things to know:
Fantasy is 2500 points, 5 rounds (3 Saturday, 2 Sunday)
40k is 1850 points, 6 rounds (4 Saturday, 2 Sunday)
We've split off the individual painting/modeling awards to a separate competition: Golden Gobbo (our own take on the Golden Daemon comp). Your GT ticket allows you to enter into this as well - there's no additional cost!
There will be Friday and Saturday night events. We're still working out whether the Friday night events will be at the hotel or the school, but they won't be a 1/2 hour across town this year.
Last thing to report; I just signed the agreement on the room rate at the Hilton Garden Inn. For a nice, smooth $99/night you can stay at this nice hotel that is a straight shot north from the school.
More updates will come over winter break, but these are the big things for now!
