I can't really tell from those pics if the Chasseur has a jump jet on the back or not. Also not evident in the pics is that the big robot (Hussar) is actually a transformer with a tank mode! (sadly available separately at some future date)

The Hussar DOES have a "tank mode", which can be built from a separate blister (though, if it's anything like the other Striders, you could probably convert one to the other if your skills are good enough...)
Gargskull wrote:Those are all awesome. How big are these models? I can't find any helpful info on their web site.
Most "average" models are ~25-30mm tall. Scout Gears, like the Jerboa are ~22mm tall. Support and Assault Gears, like the Chevalier, average ~ 40mm while Striders, like the Hussar, can be anywhere from 40-60mm+. The game is scaled for 1/144 scale or 12mm but 15mm terrain can easily be subbed.

Those pics also show the new packaging that stuff is slowly getting switched over to. Prettier and it shows the models, not 10-15 year old art.

Models look quite blocky. Hopefully this drawback will be reflected in the price. Not sure why they would be out models with that quality in the first place...

(Disclaimer: I'm DP9's website guy.)
They're tiny representation of 3-4 meter (generally... I'm not sure what size the Hussar is, as it's very new) war machines. They're blocky as a design trait. The general design philosophy for Heavy Gear is to take a lot of cues from real-world armored vehicles and such, so you get a lot of blocky shapes. Tanks generally have a lot of blocky shapes as there's not a lot of point or need to streamline them.
(Of course, walkers are really bad from a realism standpoint due to issues such as being very complex to engineer and shot traps, but I think every sci-fi setting has some places where cool trumps realism.)
The comparatively small size forces some design considerations as well. These are bigger than 'power armor' so they do have a (tight) cockpit, something liek a fighter plane. Many Heavy Gear designs are laid out so the pilot's head is technically in the mech's head, but there's several other sensors available.
I haven't read the NuCoal stuff yet, but I believe they're very pragmatic and integrate designs and weapon systems from lots of places, even on their own designs (those shown here). The Chasseur looks very similar to Southern designs with the rounded shoulders and head, while the Jerboa looks to have a few parts (but not many) in common with the Northern Ferret design. It's also got jet engines trapped on, apparently.
The Hussar is a bit blocky in design because it has some sort of tank-mode I haven't seen good pictures of, as of yet. Automatically Appended Next Post: warboss wrote:Balance wrote: Prettier and it shows the models, not 10-15 year old art.

Fair enough, but it's been used a LOT by this point, and it's getting so it isn't the most representative. The photos are much more useful int hat they show where weapons go by default, for example. I still use the art a lot for spot stuff, and plan to continue to do so.

I do think they shouldn't be the cover of a box of minis even though I like the pics themselves so I applaud the change to painted minis on the front. I just want the Ghislain art somewhere on the back too! The new artists are good but they just don't hit the same spot that the old art does... I'm sure nostalgia has alot to do with this too though.

I honestly have no idea. I really don't have the bandwidth to be involved in the design side, so I often only see stuff a few weeks before it's released, if that. I've seen some chatter about NuCoal (and there's some specific avenues where "I don't know" becomes "I can't say" because of that) but I don't have their designs as 'internalized' as I do for the North. I'm guessing it's a command variant of some sort, but I could be wrong.

Nice minis. Unfortunately the closest store to me that carries Heavy Gear is over an hour away.
And is it just me or does the faction's name remind you of an 80's slogan for the power company? "Don't go nuclear, choose NuCoal!"
