I haven't played an MMO (WoW was the last one) for a good three to four years. I've been following this game for the last year or so and it does have my attention, though I am still not sure if I will pick it up or not. I figure I'll end up waiting for a few months after release before I decide if I will buy it or not.

So who else is seriously looking into buying it or already has it pre-ordered and what do you expect from it?

Sadly the gameplay looks very WoW-ish.

On the bright side the concept is awesome and the game itself is very highly polished.

Never played it or seen it played, from that statement I presume WoW took its gameplay from dark age of camelot though.

EDIT: derp -.- fused dark age of camelot with age of conan.

The compainion systems looks interesting enough. Have them go out and harvest, craft and something about sending them out to do things which will help you gain dark/light side points or something to that effect. I think you can use them to help you while questing.

The game does look polished indeed, but I'm afraid of getting another SW: Galaxies. I played that for a month or two before quitting. From what I understand it was plauged with issues both software and GM.

I've always like the idea of SW games, a number of them even looked pretty good, but very few seemed to deliver the way I hoped.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

It looks alright, still wondering how much it would annoy me when all the Bounty Hunters are walking around with the same sidekick etc.

However it has tried to break some new ground in MMO's with some more typical RPG solo game elements, so I'd give them some credit for that.

Unlikely I'll play it launch, however would give a trial a go, and if the game drops to half the normal price after 6months I might have a go for £20.

A lot will depend on what is announced at Blizzcon this weekend. If Pandaria (ie WoW's equivilent of China) is announced as the new expansion location, then Blizz has me hooked and signed up for another two years.

Eh I preordered it. Considering the time period between when the preorders started and when the game launches it will have only been a few dollars a week set aside, essentially. At that price even if I don't like it I won't feel like I wasted that much.

I'm not getting it because my soul is eternally sold to Blizzard and WoW.

That and I've been pressured into buying, and paying for, 3 MMOs in the past and wound up quitting after less than a month of gameplay because I didn't like it. I have to assume that Old Republic will be exactly the same.

Changing MMO's when invested into another is actually fairly difficult to do, often not having anything to d with the new MMO itself: character investment, going from a community you know well, the abilty to gain predicted results, ect ect.

Also, Addiction?!

Well, fair enough in 2 out of 3 cases. I did actually like RIFT and Champions Online, but it was the whole lack of knowledge about the game's inner workings that made me switch back to the game I'd been playing for 4-5 years. In the case of City of Heroes, I just hated the combat.

And I read that article a while back - kinda eerie how I can see all that happening in game...

I don't know if I could get back into MMOs. I gave a good chunk of my life to WoW and have some regrets. Also I've been burned by non wow games like Warhammer: Age of Reckoning and Age of Conan... not to mention some of the Free 2 Plays...

It being a Star Wars game has me a bit interested though.

It was an amazing game prior to the entire change around they had, they released a single patch and ruined the entire game. It's unforuinate they did that as they killed off their player base instantly.

I'll play it. I like the Old Republic universe, the prospect of some interesting storylines and the not so hardcore direction (though some would qualify it as super casual ).

I'm also super tired of fantasy themed games. Time for some blaster action!

Yeah :\ really looking for an MMO that breaks the mold, not one that tries to do the mold better.

MGS: So is it a traditional style MMO as far as actual gameplay goes, or is it actually different in a meaningful way?

Can you expand on this? Some things work the way they do becuase they work well. You don't see people complain when a FPS uses wsad and mouse for control, but it seems that much of the complaints leveled at mmo's are that they are WoW like. Almost all games within a given genre follow control conventions but it seems like MMO's get unfairly singled out.

Yeah yeah yeah, but you're just being pedantic.

Is it a generic WoW clone, or closer to say Guild Wars or Champions Online, or is it an actual action game (similar to say god of war or arkham asylum/city-- yeah, they're not MMOs I know), or a third person shooter style like crimecraft or APB, etc.

In other words you're not sure what pedantic actually means and you aren't going to answer the question. I wasn't rude to you and asked you to expand on your statement so I don't know where this little hissy fit came from. If you can't that is fine.

It is when it is both uncalled for and incorrectly used. You also still have not explained what you mean.

If you don't get it, then just ignore it and let MGS answer my question (it wasn't directed at you anyway).

As for "uncalled for", this entire line of conversation from you is uncalled for really, you could have just asked in a PM.

Your question is vague, thus why I asked you to elaborate. It can be difficult to answer a question that broad.

Yeah prior to the patch it was a really good game. I won't say amazing, but certainly well worth playing. I can never understand why Sony did it, it show's the importance of playtesting things thoroughly before implementing them.

My previous experience is based on 6 years playing EQ2 and some vague interactions with WoW, City of Villains, EVE...

Anyway... So far, to level 15, this is significantly different in terms of it's strange hybridisation between Knights of the Old Republic as a role playing story-line narrative and a regular MMO.

Now, much of the MMO aspect is standard, but it takes on things that we are familiar with about MMOs and just does them better, more polished.

I can tell you that within a very few levels, you're doing very very cool things, flying across the room with a lightsabre and throwing force lightning or launching a rocket grenade into a massed bunch of NPCs. Graphics are lovely.

I have a big criticism, the current (and likely those that will make it to the game) races are all very human and 'samey'. I want to see some of the weirder races that make star wars so iconic. Where is the wookie or the trandoshan or those cool guys with the 3 eyes or the squid heads or the Nautolans? These things define the universe.

I'm hopeful that the game will add these races in future expansions.
