Having lived near the Canadian border for most of my life I can say that there is a distinct difference between the general attitudes of the people from Canada and at least the region of the US that I was living in.

That may be why. I think Canadians and western, specifically North Western Americans have a lot in common. Whereas urban Easterners, Yankees, have little in common with either.

I don't know how urban New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont are but yeah "Yankees" do have some pretty unique personality traits, generally speaking.
For example, in a village near my home town there is a missile on the common.

Those states are actually why I specified "urban." I know a guy from Maine who is almost as hill people as I am. But I still stand on location, I imagine Eastern Canucks are a different breed too.

The coastal strip of maine is rather civilized.
As you move inland the tooth count drops rapidly: after about 35 minutes you might as well be in mississippi.
