I'm just starting to get interested in Combat Patrol (40k in 40min) type of games. I have my own opinion formed, but I was curious if I was in line with everyone.

Recall the Combat Patrol Rules

1. 400pts
2. Must have 1 troop
3. May have up to 1 HQ
4. No models with >2 Wounds
5. No special characters
6. No armor value total >33 (AVtotal = F + S + R)
7. No models with 2+ saves

that armour restriction nerfs IG pretty bad, and the 2+ save nerfs Grey Knights/SM.
33 armour is more than a single Leman Russ ffs.

Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?

Considering its only 400 points, restricting expensive 2+ models isn't really a nerf for anyone.
As for the Tanks, i think a ffs aimed at the fact you can't use a leman russ is a bit silly (battlecannons and A14/13 at 400points!)
However on that point i do agree that guard not having access to thier basic transport the chimera is odd.
Also i think the no more than 2 wounds rule should exclude swarms.

Having played with a quite few armies at 400points i'd say Orks are the best.

Try your math again. chimera is 12/10/10 wich totals at 32. The highest you can get is a devilfish. Eldar get nerfed bad seeing as they can't take their basic transport.

Armour aside, orks win. For 400 points i could have 30 boyz with a pk and a tricked-out warboss, with maybe grots for cover. Or i can get 3 rokkit kans, 3 grotzooka kans, a kff mek and some boyz.

Sorry, i thought it was 12/12/10 and it didnt say on the GW website when i tried to check.

However, try your math again. No warbosses (3W)

IG aren't screwed over here...

In combat patrol games, Armoured Sentinels are amazing, and a Griffon becomes pretty useful. Plus, you can easily fit a power blob with other goodies in 400 points.

Honestly, the most screwed over army is GK. Expensive enough as it is, with no termies that leaves either PA or Inquistorial stuff. When it comes down to it, a GK Strike squad dies the same way a Tatical Squad but costs more.

This is my Leman Russ. There are many out there like it, but this one is mine. Without it, I am useless. Without me, it is useless.

Yes, sentinels chimera and mortars make for a solid combat patrol.

I might actually lean a little more towards SW.

150 points for 10 marines with bolter, bolt pistol, CCW, counter-attack. 5 points to give them 2 meltaguns.

140 points for 5 missile launchers with split fire.

100 points for one of the better Librarians in the game. Living Lightning wrecks light-vehicles and walkers. Jaws can insta-gib anything scary and snipe models (PK Nobs, special weapon marines, etc). Hurricane can put the hurt on swarms...or anything else.

Hmm, missed the nothing over 2 wounds part.. Eh, you can give u'm a kff for saves or a weirdboy for warpath, teleports, and extra waaaghs!.

And your HQ would have to be primaris pysker...or priest. Lol.
IG's best bet would be to stock up on platoons I guess.
1 platoon command + 2 squads=120 points. primaris psyker is 70 points, so you could get a primaris with 2 platoons, a chimera and a few meltaguns.
That's what I'd use, anyway.

Nice Synapse/Leadership there...

I think Dark Eldar do quite well. Try this;
3 Trueborn, three blasters
Venom, two splinter cannons
5 Warriors, blaster
Venom, two splinter cannons
5 Warriors, blaster
Venom, two splinter cannons

Comes to 396pts. You can chuck plasma grenades on the Trueborn if you want

You didn't include tau! They would definitely be the best, one W squad in a warfish and a kitted out XV8 squad, few if any armies can pack that much shooty into 400pts.

Nids are always running/shooting at the nearest enemy anyhow. I've never had problems with failed synapse checks before, especially in low level games.

You don't need an HQ. It says may have up to 1 HQ.

Armored Sentinels total 32, so would fit. but i'd probably still go Scout to save poiints.
and i'd probably skip the HQ and add Comissars to squads/platoons.

The lack of heavy armor means AC or ML is all the anti tank a player should ever need, and melta is not absolutely necessarily.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

But what about when someone kills 6 Hormagaunts out of a 20-man squad, you test at LD6, and flee off the board? Or fail IB and go charge a tank they can't hurt? Or even (dare I say it) pinning weapons?

Not to mention that just under half the time, you HG will be standing still and shooting at the closest enemy unit (i.e. not tank)

I dunno how effective it's been for you, but for me, that list seems ridiculously easy to exploit.

I would pick guard. for 400 pts you can have a significant amount of fire from 5 squads (250pts) platoon (30pts) and command (50pts). That leaves you 70pts to tool your sqauds into something nasty. (melta guns or power weapons, maybe a commissar to improve the blob) Regardless, 150 shots (w/ first rank second rank) is deadly even with a lasgun. against a t 4 opponent, thats 75 hits and 25 wounds. against marines thats 8.3 dead, or against orks thats 20.8 dead. Its also takes an incredible amount of firepower to kill a 50 man squad.

ww1 French (Imperial Guard) 1500pts
Crimson Fists 2,000 pts
Orks 1,000 pts

6. No armor value total >33 (AVtotal = F + S + R)
if this rule is per tank only then this could be quite good maybe.

Veteran Squad, mortar 3 plasma gun, Chimera.
Hydra Flak Tank Battery.

Griffon.

Orks with loads of boys and a kff mek is very tough to stop. Even a small "kan wall" can be very productive as someone mentioned.

I'm surprised no ones mentioned Necron Warriors or Tyranid Genestealers. Two twenty-block Warrior Squads are friggin' daunting in a combat patrol mission, especially with their phase out and vulnerability to power weapons and fists are gone. Genestealers would wreck house as well in close combat. Put Ymgarl Genestealers in there and its like re-creating Aliens 2 all over again.

You forgot Tau.

I think Tau are really good in combat patrols. Getting stealth suits and crisis suits, and then splitting your shots between models is always epic.

I feel like orks are nerfed a little. Taking a waaagh! will loose you 1/6 of your army

I mentioned the fact that you can have both an XV88 team AND a Fireknife team in 400 pts.

. What are you talking about? Sence when do orks lose 1/6 of their army from a waaagh!? If you roll a one then some orks might take a wound, but it only happens 1 out of 6 times and it's hardly a 6th of your army...
