Article

A snippet of the full article.

Arizona's Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that a city council candidate with limited English language skills can be kept off the ballot in a largely bilingual town on the Mexico border.

A Yuma County Superior Court judge touched off a furor last week when he disqualified Alejandrina Cabrera, 35, from running for city council in the town of San Luis over what he called a "large gap" between her English proficiency and that required to serve as a public official.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with her being on the ballot.

Sure she may have difficulty fulfilling her duties on the council because of her limited English language skills, but that seems like an issue for the voters to me.

This could be a group collective that all shares one mind and one thought process, identifying themselves singularly to keep the confusion to a minimum.

I concur. It's seldom that a field of candidates is improved by artificially narrowing the ballot.

Singular, not plural. No hive mind, just one mind.

Yeah, it seems like if the language barrier would make for a poorer government, then that's something for the electorate to consider when voting, not something to be decided for them.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Arizona has named its official language as English, as have numerous other states; many of which are not on the southern border.

Could a local town council decide the official language of the town?

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

If she needed eo speak english for the job and she can speak a little already I am sure she would learn very quickly.

The best way to learn a language is to use it.

I personally dont see the problem with her running. If people have a problem with her English, then she simply wont get voted for, problem solved.

What are legal impediments to a US citizen running for office?

When I think of how pissed people get trying to hold an understandable conversation with a customer service worker from another country, I can see the folly of a someone without the language skills running for a government position in the U.S.

Actually it is. If Arizona wants Spanish to be the official language, than the rest of the states can suck it. English - people speak English in Arizona?

And the only good legal advice you'll get without paying upfront for the lawyer to research all the facts.

If Arizona has an official language, and she can't speak it, I don't see the problem.

I mean, I see the problem with some of the reasoning behind the law, but that's a different kettle of fish.

She was born here, lived in Mexico and came back around 15 years old, spent the last 20 years in the USA and still doesn't speak English well enough to keep these shenanigans from happening.

I was under the impression this had been dealt with...
Anyway, this seems fair. If her English really was that bad then it's probably best she improves it before she runs for office...

There is no real reason to respond to these sorts of posts. People who, in 2012, even after the long form, still dispute that Obama is a US citizen are either trolls, or willfully ignorant and neither one is worth anyone's time.
