In an attempt to address the lingering "Han shot first" controversy, Star Wars creator George Lucas may have only fanned the flames of fandom even more. You see, Lucas says Han Solo never actually fired first in his classic showdown with Greedo. Fans only wanted to think that. So basically it's all your own fault.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter (via /Film), Lucas said, "The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn't. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down."

I'm stealing the quote from Cracked: "you will never love a woman as much as this man hates his fans".

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Mr.Lucas what did we do wrong? Did we not call you daddy enough? Did we break eye-contact when you were doing unspeakable things to us with the three prequels? Please just tell us.... We want your love but all you do is give us Force Unleashed and remakes of those *sob* movies.....

Wow. Lucas' stupidity astounds me. Han is a bad-ass outlaw not a murderer and I doubt anyone ever thought of him as anything else.

And this is the many who's spent the last 15 years ruining the EU for the rest of us...

This just in: George Lucas is out of touch with the fanbase of his films.

My disdain for him grows each time he complains about people not liking his films and unnecessary editing.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Funny thing is, Lucas kind of has a point. Han shooting first in the original edit is the only point where the person who starts the violence benefits from it, so on a thematic level the change makes sense. It's just the final edit requires us to believe that Greedo missed Han from across a table, and that someone so staggeringly incompetent could have gotten the drop on Han in the first place... which basically just makes everyone look bad.

Lucas, of course, continues to not understand this, because he's rich and successful and owns one of the profitable setting in the world, and so really doesn't need to bother about suffering the ego hit that'd come from admitting he screwed up.

The EU was pretty ridiculous even when Lucas wasn't involved.

In terms of pulp fiction the Star Wars Universe is one of the better ones. If you're readying any EU based on a media franchise expecting high literature it's not the EU's fault

I’m not asking for high art, I’m asking for a universe where Jedi fetuses can’t force lightning people.

This is an artists' depiction of an actual event in an EU book.

Han shot first because it was the only way to resolve the situation... aside from handing himself over to Jabba to be killed. He may be a smuggler with a heart of gold, but he ain't STUPID.

If he walked through the bar, and Greedo walks up to him and before he could even say one word Han guns him down....THEN he would have been a cold blooded killer.

Here are two outlaws meeting in a bar, one getting the drop on the other, in a situation that is basically a future version of the classic Wild West standoff.

And in any Wild West standoff you want to shoot first, not hope that the other guy misses.

Excellent point.

Not your quote, I realize, but just to nitpick: Lucas has no fans. I personally can not think of a single person I've met who will mourn the man when he is dead. Star Wars has(had) many fans however.

I swear, you Star Wars fans have the worst case of battered wife syndrome ever. Lucas's self-interest was on display as far back as 1983, when he chose teddy bears over Sasquatches for merchandizing reasons. And it's been like that for over 30 years now.

And clearly he has some weird obsession with reworking his older films, but I think a bigger factor is how the cash register rings every time he releases a new "edition." Of course he thinks the SW fans are stupid. I'd be tempted to feel that way too if people just kept blindly buying the money-grubbing schlock I was pumping out. If you really think about his career, it's not hard to see how his attitudes have formed.

Lucas is and was a *great* businessman first and foremost. Everything else is secondary.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Ok, lets clear this up there was never a case where 'Han shot first'.

Han shot, Greedo didn't fire at all.

Besides how could be fire first and miss a sitting target at that range with a gun pointed at him. Pointless witless retcon two brighten up Han Solos rep in Lucas' eyes.

Besides there is no need to worry about Han Solo being a common murderer, when there is more than enough evidence to call him a terrorist. He wasn't formally part of the rebel armed forces when he attacked Imperial military assets resulting in the deaths of Imperial citizens. Sort of defeats the point saying he was defending himself against Greedo (which he was anyway as Greedo pulled a gun on him first) when as an illegal combatant he was blowing away soldiers on the Death Star: aka terrorism.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I don't think you can qualify attacks against military targets as terrorism without expanding the word so widely that it loses all meaning...

Han was more an an insurgent than a terrorist (but that's hard to say as the empire was all encompassing for the galaxy save a few places).

If:

Lucas can qualify killing of civilian persons as murder without expanding the word so widely that it loses all meaning...

then by the same logic:

Han Solo = terrorist.

In other words: Han was fine as he was whether shooting Greedo or Imperial stormtroopers, no need for a retcon.

I own an original trilogy on cassette that was the first release of the trilogy, so its from the early 80s (pretty neat if I say so myself) so I get to watch it completely un altered when I want. And Ive watched that scene closely, on slow mo, and Im sorry Mr Lucas, your an idiot.

Except Lucas is an idiot... If the fans didn't have to deal with him I doubt anyone would pay attention to what he has to say XD I wish he'd just get out of the EU and let the authors handle it (they can start by killing the 60 year old who has no room left to develop but for some reason is still the center piece of the SWEU because Lucas won't let anyone kill him).

That's a separate argument.

The point of the "Han shot first" situation is that as the films progress, his character changes from cold-hearted, selfish bastard to warm-hearted hero. In other words, a story of redemption.

It is only possible if the character starts from a bad position.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
