Yep, you read that right, I was in my flgs today where a temporary manager was holding the store as the regular guy was at a managers meeting. He had a noob turn up, looking at crons and all the usual start up buys including the rule book, and his actual words were "I'd advise against buying that as the new edition is rumoured to be not too far off".

Nothing concrete in there though I thought it worth putting out there should anyone be interested.

Cheers

Which theory does it prove?

That store employees and managers sometimes like to look like they are in the know?

Good on that manager.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Wish he would of been my manager when I worked there. I got told to flog the 4th edition rule book right up until the day 5th came out. Same with Battle for Macragge. =o\

Well I must admit that I'm quite surprised by that, and if head office found out he could be in big trouble for that too (unless he sold the guy Fantasy Battle instead ).

Company policy is to sell the current edition right the way up to the next one.

6th Edition's release date is the worst kept secret on the internet and is 3 months away so that's a fair amount of sales lost.

Fair play to the manager for being honest about it, but I think with 3 months still to go he was jumping the gun a bit, I would have given the kid a free copy of the AoBR mini rule book and still sold him the Necrons.

This person does not sound like an official manager.
Wouldn't an official manager have this kid buy 5th ed, then everything possible for the crons? Only to have to buy it all over again in 6 months when the next edition comes out.

Yeah, assuming someone from GW reads the OP, notes the OP's location and makes a few logical deductions, this thread may have resulted in said Temp Manager being fired for advising a customer not to buy the product.

Considering the Necrons JUST got their codex, bad call on the managers part he might have cost himself a sale. I find it hard to believe that Necrons just got a 5th ed book and are going to be turning into 6th ed. That is unless the customers was looking at two armies and the secondary might be in line for a new codex, at which point his suggestion was sound, but with the information given, bad move imo.

Just to confirm, he was a temporary manager filling in for the regular guy who was at a meeting, he travels around a lot of stores doing that kinda thing (all over the UK I believe), so whilst he's not necessarily got a firm base of operations, it is possible that he speaks to that many different area managers / senior staff in different areas that he picks up little tit bits here and there...

I agree that he did GW out of a sale, but that's not my concern. the chap did by a fare old amount of 'crons before he left the store so GW still got a meaty sale out of him!

Not so sure about that, the store in town here has had two managers in 14 years...not bad run and the second one is still running it.

My FLGS owner told me not to buy the black reach book about 3 months ago based on the fact that 6th ed is coming out soon. Note that it is still not out

That said, he's an independent store (not run by GW) but the main reason he told me not to buy it was that he didn't want to see me spend $50 just for it to be out of date in a few months. That said, I have bought tons of models from him, so I don't think he missed out on much for sales.

It sounds like the OP was saying that the manager told the guy not to buy the 5th ed rule book, not that he said not to buy any of it. The proper advice would have been to buy the models and get started building/painting so that you are ready to go when the new rulebook hits.

I think this is a neat little story. GW rulebooks are freaking expensive nowadays and I would be ticked off if I bought and learnt a ruleset that was invalidated in a few months after purchasing.

Nice call by the temp manager if all rumours are correct, I'd throw more weight behind the warhammer/40K release schedule over the past nigh on twelve years rather than the rumours mind, but yeah.

Good on him. Hope he doesn't get any flak from this thread though.

That's a nice Temp manager... but it only proves that he knows about as much as the community knows.

This.

Honestly, not only does it not sell a rule book, but it now requires the kid to learn the game from someone else, with all the problems and misconceptions inherent in that.

Either that or wait X months until 6th to even learn how to play.

Don't fool yourself... many of said problems and misconceptions comes from reading said rulebook.

Aye but odds are, he's buying 40K because mates have it, they'll teach him how to play in the meantime, plus he has figures to put together and paint anyways.

Its saved buying a expensive book, (really expensive) that will be replaced in months, hell if rumour is right, almost to the stage you could classify it as weeks till release

(I'm just as likely to say ten weeks to go, than three months)

This is actually one of my GW bugbears, not letting folks know a new army book is coming is one thing, might make sense on some level, but to stand there and let folks buy an expensive box set or main rule book when you know its worthless in less than 3-4months seems bloody harsh to me. very likely to cause ill will from what is a new customer you want to stick around for a bit.
