Temp manager will be safe.
GW Hq won't mind this one bit since said customer apparently walked out with an armful of mini's; there's far more margin in model sales than books.

This means little, from what information the OP has presented. Would I like to think that 6th ed is coming soon? Yeah, I would. Does that mean it is? No. Maybe he knows, maybe he doesn't.

It was really stormy a few nights ago when I went to GW to meet my opponent for my Blood Bowl league game and the store was dead save a couple regulars (I presume, I don't hang around there much). This one guy that was there who by no means was a red shirt and I got into a vivid discussion of how terrible a game 40k is I was amused.

40k is terrible. The rules were written by drunk monkeys.
Although there is no much out there that interests me other than Flames of War and of course WHFB (which regardless of there being NO power armour pew pew guns) Is a monumental improvement over 40k game mechanics....
Actually I am still shocked at how many people turn their noses up at WHFB. The need to play with guns over 2 handed battle axes is beyond me when the game is superior.
GW should push its WHFB harder.

I find this statement a bit funny, considering how common and useful battle axes are in the 40k setting!
Fantasy burn-out is pretty common, though. A lot of gamers are used to WoW, D&D, or other fantasy-based games and tend tog et burned out, I think. They want something that feels a bit fresher, and the space opera of 40k scratches that itch for them.

This thread highlights an interesting point that amazes me at times.
This is an expensive hobby, it's a good £200 without thinking just to get the models you need for a small game, let alone the rest on books and paints etc.
With this in mind do people not research things before walking into GW and spending vast amount of money. A quick read of the wiki page on 40k will show that the rules are updated pretty much every four years and that four year break is this year! That's one of the first things I did back in late 2009 so I hung back on WHFB as it was clear a new book would be out the next summer. I had a good two and a half years on 40k so I started with that game system instead.
I considered the same things starting an army. My first was IG knowing a new book would be a long way off.
I simple could not spend £££'s on a new hobby without having researched it a little first.

While this manager lost on a sale, he practically insured that this person will remain a loyal customer for years to come and the returns in the long run will be much more substantial than if that person had bought the book, found out it they had lost on 50+ dollars a few months later and started looking at wargaming alternative out of sheer disgust,
Back when Games-Workshop had a distribution center in Canada, I had a local store that would sell their stuff. He bought 10 new rulebooks for 4th edition a month before 5th edition came out and was never informed of this upcoming release. When he learned about the new edition and called his trader account's contact in Canada he was told "tough luck" and they would not take back the books.
This store no longer sells any games-workshop products.
A good salesmen knows when losing a sale will have better returns than the quick buck.

I didn't say they should be.

This is actually one of my GW bugbears, not letting folks know a new army book is coming is one thing, might make sense on some level, but to stand there and let folks buy an expensive box set or main rule book when you know its worthless in less than 3-4months seems bloody harsh to me. very likely to cause ill will from what is a new customer you want to stick around for a bit.
Right, if you have any intention of keeping the customer beyond that purchase it would pay to be honest with them if you knew they should be holding on to their money. It's a great bit of customer relations, good on the guy to do something like this even if it might well get him in trouble for doing so.

Fair enough
I went to a painting competition at the Manchester GW on Saturday; didn't get a chance to use the new paints but the comments from others about them were overwhelmingly positive (except for the textures, which looked crap on bases but surprisingly good on Nurgle marines) with the biggest plaudits going to the 'Dry' paints which were fantastically easy to use for drybrushing. All the comp painters got to have a long chat with the manager afterwards about the new line and he was pretty frank with us: The new range was designed by the 'Eavy Metal team, but with a lot of input from previous GD winners. It's been in development for about 3 years. Some of the colours won't match up properly to the old ones as it is a new paint formula from a different company (right here in Manchester <3). The only thing that makes me sad is the lack of dropper bottles :(

Honestly, I can say I'm not surprised about the range being designed by the 'Eavy Metal Team.
That "Kabalite Green" color? That's exactly what one of the 'Eavy Metal guys showed in the Dark Eldar painting tutorials for their Kabal. A lot of the new military greens(Elysian Green, Castellan Green, Ogryn Camo) are also reaaaaaaaaaaally good matches for colors that Forge World has used on their display models.

When I worked at the local GW store, during the months prior to the 5th ed launch, we could advise customers that within a month or so a new rulebook would be up for pre-order. You still gave the customer the option of buying the current book, and were at least expected to offer that while the rules in it were only good for say 2-3 months, it would still give you the basic rules foundation before the new edition hit. Plus, you could still always play the old missions with the new rules, and the hobby sections & backround stories wouldn't suddenly become obsolete.
But you never, ever outright said, "don't buy this because a new book is coming out!"
Sure, 9 out of 10 customers would say they'd wait for the new rules, but there would always be the odd few who would jump and buy the current book, using it to get a basic rules knowledge and because they wanted to enjoy what the current book offered.
