South Koreans also believe in fan death. This internet addiction line is pretty tired.

It wasn't an abortion, Frazzled. She gave birth. By law you're required to not care about the child after the mother gives birth.

Didn't you get the memo?

Agreed, on the silliness of both..

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I really can't comprehend how academically trained people like medical doctors can believe something as stupid as the fan death theory...but the article listed at least a handful of cases that might be related to internet addiction.

Internet addiction. Is there even a real diagnosis for that? If yes, are there actual statistics for that to compare different countries?

Video game/internet addiction is another form of popular hysteria in South Korea (has been for years), just like fan death over there or the scare about D&D back in the 80s in America. In the US, doctors as a group (the AMA) remain skeptical about internet or video game addiction as a diagnosis. There is a cultural trend here in the States, however, to label any kind of pattern of unhealthy behavior as an "addiction."

Thanks for the info.

Still...playing so hard that she didn't notice her water broke...then giving birth, instantly killing it and going back to gaming...makes me wonder what made her head THAT fethed up.

I wonder if she noticed conceiving the child.

I would gather that she did, I mean, it's hard not to notice that unless you're on drugs...

Considering the pain and exertion involved...

I wonder what the other people in that internet café did.

I mean...again, WTF? A woman gives birth right next to you...that gather some attention. And then she...what? Kills it in plain sight? Or did she carry it off to some semi-remote location to do this? Nobody was calling an ambulance or something or...

...I'd really like more info about this story. Seems fethed up on several levels.

I think someone mixed up conceiving and giving birth.

Yes, I read "giving birth" instead of conceiving for some reason. I blame the chicken I ate last night which was pretty close to its use by date.

A 15 year old killed his mother because she wouldn't stop nagging him? Jesus. I know some serious gamers but most of them know when to put it down and walk away...

TWO parents let their child starve because BOTH of them were too obsessed with gaming? Huh? How can such an attitude be instilled in people?

This is more than disturbing. I laughed a little because it seems like something off of South Park, but I kind of regret it.

Nobody kills their mom or their baby because of video games. There's a whole mess of issues behind incidents like this and you'd have to be the kind of dolt who thinks you could die from running a fan with the door closed to believe video games are the problem.

Seems like a replay of the "HS girl gives birth in the bathroom at her prom" story from a decade or so ago. Which happened in NJ IIRC. Again, I don't think this story has much to do with anything other than a pregnant girl who's messed up in the head.

Crap. I hope I don't die. I run my fan every night even during the winter because the contant noise helps me sleep. I also get night sweats so the breeze helps. I have been doing this for 20 years...

I have a white moise machine, because I got used to a baby monitor and can't sleep without the sound now. Plus with absolute silence I hear my ears ringing and the urge to torture interns with jobs like getting me kolaches becomes uncontrollable.

+1 to a white noise machine. I used to be a fan guy but after fearing for my life (more like the constant air plugs my nose up something fierce) I switched to the noise machine. Its just the sounds I need to sleep good. I find it odd that I need noise to go to sleep

A buddy of mine can't fall asleep unless an episode of Arrested Development is playing. Shared a hotel room with him in Vegas a few years ago, and sure enough, he brought his laptop with the DVDs.

I think the situation is changing though, in terms of regarding it as an addiction. A friend of mine was writing her thesis on game addiction and focusing on World of Warcraft. While there was nothing as horrifying as the OP, there was some pretty awful stuff in there. To be frank, lives are being destroyed and it is far more common than you might think. Perhaps if it is recognised as a valid form of addiction (and I think this concerns online games specifically) then at least it might open some avenues of help to those that need it.

Regarding Korea, having lived there for some years their worries are not unfounded. Most kids head to 'PC rooms' (on every street) at least several times a week. It's not unheard of for students to spend 24 hours or more playing games, and unlike here in the West there is no concept of them being geeky/nerdy. I don't know whether there is something specific about the Korean psyche or culture that leads them to it, but they tend to go 110% for a long time at whatever they are doing - be it work, study or even playing games. Hell even at a tennis club I played at their were kids on the courts for 6 hours a day doing endless baseline drills. Over there, if you do something, you don't half-arse it. That culture has expanded into computer games, so having lived there while horrifying it's not an altogether surprising story.
