Yes?

Not really sure what you're asking here, but I see orks win all the time in my area.

Yes. You've just pointed out 2 pros that counter the con. Poor saves? Too many Orks to care. Powerfist? Not scared, still have plenty of Boyz to take you down.

Also, in fluff terms Orks never lose. If they win they win, if they die it doesn't count and if they lose they can always have another go!

It would be Orkish, which is the actual quote letter for letter.

Fluffwise Orks can't lose because killing an Ork spawns thousands of spores which grow into more Orks. It repeats untill the planet is overrun. Then other orks come and take them to another planet to repeat the process.

The only way to beat Orks is Nids who eat the spores.

Orks always win. Sometimes they just let the enemy think they've beaten the orks back, so that when the boyz reappear with even more boyz and crump 'em properly, its a surprise. Its kunning strategy!

In the fluff, they win all the time.

In gameplay naturally anyone who fights against an Imperial army with a non-Imperial one is going to have a default handicap, but it's possible.

"The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude. "- From Culture vs. Kultur: Thoughts on Orkish Society by Uthan the Perverse, a controversial Eldar philosopher

Or unless yer have a mutiny or two to pass da time, or unless strange fings start happenin', which dey usually do when yer out in da warp. One time we had some bloody great ugly fing come straight out of Weird Lugwort's 'ed! It butchered half da lads, that was pretty entertainin'. Come ter fink of it, space is a pretty good larf. They win all the time.

Last 1850 tourny at my FLGS we had 2 ork players, myself and another and then a good deal of other lists, like drago wing, salamanders and much more. Both ork players were in the top 3, with GK in 2nd.

orks in game play and fluff win all the time. the dex is showign its age, but has plenty of things going to it

for the points the ork boys is probably the best deal of any troop

kff mek is one of the best values in any dex, 4+ saves on vehicles and 5+ saves for units for 85 points... yes please, the ability to repair broken guns and vehicles a bonus

things liek red paint that let you move an extra inch and take no consequences ie move 7 people inside shoots, one gun shoots and you only get hit on 6's

diversified nobz/nob bikers

35 points a model av10 groups of biggeis with TL rokkit launchers

lootas for massive amounts of str7 shots to ruin av10/11 transports

from a fun perspective you get cool random stuff like the SAG, looted wagons, weirdboy powers, zogwart's curse, gretchin exploding zaap gunzand suicide rokkit-pack boyz who can assault the turn they come in

orks have a lot of win built in, we could use some tweeking but the green is not as low on the ladder as a tau or eldar army

That army list looks a little too ambitious and specialised for your first army. I reccomend picking up a Warboss and 1-2 boxes of Boyz with a Trukk, possibly a squad of Nobz if you're confident of enjoying and playing Orks well.

What you're looking to do with a force like that, tabletop-wise, is get as many of your choppa Boyz downrange as fast as possible where their superior CC abilites will quickly take apart many different kinds of infantry. The Trukk is obviously helpful for this endeavour (especially with the Red Paint Job upgrade), but is extremely vulnerable to anti-vehicle and many hurt the squad inside if it rolls Kaboom! when struck.

Some more advice, since I've just seen your edit:
- Painting a large mob of Boyz can be tedious. Be prepared to sacrifice a little quality to allow the army to be finished sometime this decade. Washes and dipping techniques can speedily provide a decent greenskin look.
- Orks have very little in the way of anti-tank support. The sole dedicated anti-tank Ork unit, Tankbustas, can be led around the table on a goose chase by a clever opponent so be wary of going up against mech-heavy lists.
- Another, more advanced tactic for Ork players (as opposed to charging the enemy with Boyz) is a long-ranged formation of Killa Kans and Lootas, who are able to mow down an advancing opponent with their decent-quality firepower.

That's genius. Are there tutorials for good ork painting?
How small should I start?

Aarg, I just lost a few hundred words of advice I just typed. I'll summarise:

1. Start small. The big games you see are likely the games of established players who've been playing for a while. 500 points (usually 1 HQ and 2 full Troops choices) is the smallest official points level, but you can have casual games that are even smaller to help you learn as you gradually assemble your army.

2. Bikes are a bit too advanced for now, but once you get the hang of using Boyz a Trukk would not be a bad purchase to supplement their movement into close combat.

3. There are indeed some good tutorials for Ork painting. There are two main paths for quick painting that I've come across: Either undercoat with Orkhide Shade and define shapes with Goblin Green (the offical method covered in the AoBR handbook), or you can undercoat with a bright yellow and wash with Thraka Green. I'd reccomend searching for more techniques and trying them out on an expendable model before comitting to one. Remember that no matter what method you use, you'll always need to paint an initial layer of paint (the 'basecoat') that will usually set the colour tone for the model. Most painters use Chaos Black (it's called something different in the new paint range) as an Ork basecoat, as most orks end up being dark-skinned and -clothed.

Since this is your *first* army starting small is a good plan because it will enable you learn the rules for different units over time instead of all at once, but more importantly if you start playing and realize you don't like your army once you start trying things out then you haven't wasted a ton of money on minis you now aren't go use. Once you play a little and decide you really like the orks then the sky's the limit on acquiring whatever you want and the only real control is how much you can afford to spend on minis out of your budget.

Welcome to the hobby. Years ago I had an ork speed freaks army (full of bikes, trakks, buggies, battle wagons, gun trukks and boyz in converted trukks). They were great fun to play and some day I might once again take on the modeling challange of building another ork army. They have so many cool kits available now, though half the fun of my speed freaks was converting a ton of 1/35 scale WWII model kits into orky contraptions.

Just a bit more support from another Ork player.
You picked the best army in the game for pure fun.
We have one of the most interesting looking armies.
We have the most enjoyable kit bashing/scratch building/kustomizing options.
We have great fluff and a great codex.
We have multiple, interesting lists to play.
And though we aren't super competitive, we stand up very well, and do place respectably in Tournaments.
We are even more deadly in casual play.
I personally have about a 90% win ratio after playing for almost two years.

And I agree, start small. Find someone willing to play several 500pt games with you to start. I promise it wont be too easy or too small a game in the beginning.
