Subject: What if Warhammer 40k were a campy 80's children's cartoon?
The title is self explanatory. What would the Grimdark future of war be if it were made by the same people who made Dungeons & Dragons show?
I can imagine a group of the major space marines as the protagonist, with a single guardsmen as the group's buttmonkey. Ultramarine would be the leader character, Salamander would the token black character, Space wolf would be the character who always tries to go against the group then fails because of it. A sister of battle would be the token female, and then the Guardsman would be cowardly and weak, and is constantly proven wrong by his much more important and intelligent space marine friends. He would get one special episode where he's not a klutz, and he saves the day, then it goes straight back to the same old thing.
The recurring bad guy would Abbadon the Despoiler, who would constantly fail is his plans to destroy the Imperium thanks to his clueless daemon underlings. Orks would also be a recurring enemy, but not arch-enemy. Necrons, tyranids, tau, and eldar would get one-off episode's then fade into obscurity.
It will eventually jump the shark, and be cancelled halfway through the second season. I think I've thought this out too much.
Guardsmen, Fire! ...Feth yeah!

Seriously, 40K used to be exceedingly campy before 3rd went full throttle grimdark.

I'm in agreement with Platuan here - you're thinking of 2nd edition. Everything was over the top and incredibly metal. I reccomend reading the 2E codex to see what we mean.
He-Man rode a giant green tiger. 40k has the space wolves...
That, and I just envisioned Abaddon fleein' back to the Eye of Terror, shaking an angry fist saying (alla Cobra Commander) "We'll meet again, space marines! CHAOOOOOS!"
"The Imperium is nothing if not willing to go to any lengths necessary. So the Trekkies are zipping around at warp speed taking small chucks out of an nigh-on infinite amount of ships, with the Imperium being unable to strike back. feth it, says central command, and detonates every vortex warhead in the fleet, plunging the entire sector into the Warp. Enjoy tentacle-rape, Kirk, we know Sulu will." -Terminus
"This great fortress was a gift to the Blood Ravens from the legendary Imperial Fists. When asked about it Chapter Master Pugh was reported to say: "THEY TOOK WHAT!?""

Removing references to death, intending to inflict death, bullets, blood, and any kind of injury would be difficult indeed. Also it was fairly de facto required for TV shows to have educational messages at the end (even US dub of anime at the time such as Sailor Moon had this added in).

3E isn't all doom and gloom... There are games out with way more grimness that those.... 3E is still candlyland compared to some of the darker TT games.

And then Vulkan comes out to tell kids not to play with matches, and leave playing with fire to professionals like him. You could still do a show with lots of cartoon violence as long as it wasn't obviously humans getting hurt or any bloodshed. The Ninja Turtles slashed up robots all the time, so Marines could punch Necrons in the face whenever! Or Thousand Sons, since they're animated suits of armor essentially. You could do a lot with 40k as an 80s cartoon, and I wish we were graced with something so beautiful in our time.
And if you want a cartoon with more skulls than 40k
Granted you could do a much darker cartoon now, as it's not unusual for cartoons to have TV-PG ratings on them. Guys get waxed on the Clone Wars all the time. Another example would be the Starship Troopers CGI series, which had characters get hurt and in some cases die, and hordes of bugs getting blown apart. We're getting into modern animation though, but just a thought.

There could be a recurring gag where the guardsman was supposed to be executed by a Comissar but maybe something spoiled his aim and in every other episode he keeps trying to finish the job.

The Arch-Enemy would have to have Communistical over-tones. Chaos are overtly anti God-Emperor and the Guard/Marines zealously fight in his name against the Godless enemy.
Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?

I dunno, 2nd Edition wasn't too bad. Most of its silliness was leftover stuff from Rogue Trader.
But, realistically, nothing is worse than Thunderwolf Cavalry. That sets a new benchmark low for 40K, lol. Just when you thought they'd put the nails in the Fantasy innnnnnnnn Spaaaaaaaaaaaace coffin. The new Necron Codex is pretty bad too.
Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
The figures were yellow, and supposed to be Imperial Fists.

You are mistaken. Those were the super rare GOLD MARINES!!!
If we were to follow Kid_Kyoto's idea, one of them would be the awesome gold ranger!

Rogue Trader and 2nd Ed are campier THAN an 80s cartoon. Check them out and see. Then 3rd Ed went grimdark gothic death SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE etc.
