The video is a bit corny but the proposed product has caught my interest, even though I'm not a fantasy wargamer or role-player (strickly 40K at the moment)...

if that doesn't work, hopefully this will...

And no, I do not work for this company.

EDIT 4/29/2012: Less than a week into the Kickstater and they're more than half way to the goal!

EDIT 5/04/2012: Goal has been reached! Congrats!!

EDIT 5/14/2012: More than $10K contributed??? Holy Heck!!

Looks promising. The only thing I would be worried about is breakage. He really didn't go into how strong these are and how they can be painted (spray paint would melt it?)

Hello. I do work for the company. :-) In fact I'm the guy in the corny video! I'm an RPG'er so this is not a forum that I frequent but I thought I would drop in and let you know that if you have and questions or comments I'm available.

On a side note, I have been reading some of the other threads and I have to say I had no idea there was so much back story to these war-games... I guess I just thought it was all field tactics and strategy. Any recommended reading for someone thinking about trying out 40k?

Welcome to Dakka

Good luck with the project, please do keep us informed.

Most of the games have fairly extensive backgrounds, which is developed in each and every rule and army book.

Games Workshop also publish a fairly extensive range of novels, audio dramas etc etc set in the worlds of their games. See here : http://www.blacklibrary.com/

Wow. That was hilarious and informative. I think I may need to fill in some grey areas a bit yet, but the overall theme seems to be "Fight, fight, fight, kill, kill kill." Sounds like a riot!

Yeah, most roleplaying games give you a lot of options when handling a certain situation; you could fight, run away, cast a spell, etc. Not wargames. Particularly not 40K; in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only WAR!

Just wondering, if I back for a large sum of money, and the Kickstarter fails, what happens to it? Do I still get the reward?

No money is taken from you until after the due date is reached. If the kickstarter fails, no money is taken. If it achieves its goal, money will be taken.

Also, since it seems as though we are going to hit our mark we've been talking about stretch goals. The one that we like the best right now is additional terrain thrown in for those people who got on board early. Kind of a thank you for believing in the project in its infancy. I'm not supposed to tell what the extra piece will be but I'll give you a hint... you put dice in the top and they come out the bottom... :-) good hint huh?

Check out the Blackwater Gulch kickstarter, the guy who ran it is on here on Dakka as "Necros":
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west?ref=users

He actually exceeded his goal by quite a bit, and threw in custom made dice for all those who contributed over a certain amount. It seemd to be a big hit with everyone! hint-hint, wink-wink.

Yeah my fancy is more tickled by that then a dice tower, we in the wargaming world don't really use em...

I actually use two at every demo table we have, it prevents most instances of lost dice.

Well then I propose you two duel. The winner/survivor gets to pick the reward... or I could just offer both, and then you choose one or the other when I get your info at the end.... decisions, decisions

Has it been said what this terrain is made of? or the overall size of that castle?

-Emily Whitehouse| On The Lamb Games

Well the pieces are made from XPS (extruded polystyrene) and the castle in the video is 33"x33" by 10".

While that is a nice size for a castle of that price, extruded polystyrene isn't the most durable of materials. :/

XPS is not as strong as say injection molded plastic or something along those lines. But it's still pretty tough stuff at a half inch thick. In fact most of the comments I get about the product from people who have been able to use it have said they were surprised by its strength. In regards to your other point, it is a good price, but if it were made out of just about anything else it would be horribly expensive. We tested and talked about a lot of different materials and eventually settled on one that would allow us to make something that most gamers could actually afford.

Generally the guys at Wyrd are pretty lenient with startups posting on their forum (though it probably wouldn't hurt to ask them before posting), and Malifaux (their flagship game) is a terrain-heavy, skirmish game, where this seems like it would fit in, so that seems like a pretty good place to try out.

Wow, your video totally won me over. I was just talking about how I'd love to make a castle for warhammer fantasy a few months ago (with the release of Blood in the Badlands with the brief siege rules). But I couldn't find anything at all reasonably priced (pre-made castle pieces) or that didn't involve insane amount of work (making my own castle pieces using HistArt molds or the like).

So, I've backed you . Now to find some other wargaming item to sell to cover it, heh, so that I'm at a "net zero" on the wargaming budget

I do have a question: at the end of the video, you have a small castle that's black(ish). How did you paint this, and are there paints that should be avoided with the material (I'm guessing any kind of spray, including primer, is a no-go?).

Also, will the pieces come with instructions for making the castle in the video?

Finally... I cannot believe you have children that are 2, 1, and 10 weeks! That's pretty amazing... and if you can manage that and still make all the pieces for that castle, well, I think you can do anything!

Edit: @ arguemaniac- I'm in MD, and usually game at DreamWizards just north of D.C. I noticed that you're somewhat nearby based on your sig (although I'm betting more in Northern VA) but I'll have a lot of these pieces in the area, if you're interested in seeing them (of course, you might get some yourself, in which case... our powers combined = gigantic fortress of doom...?)

Edit2: If there ends up being extras, my vote is also more / unique terrain, rather than a dice tower... I've never even used one!

Hey thanks for the encouragement! OK- I will cover everything in the order you brought it up. The castle in the background. I sprayed it with a base coat of gray acrylic and then used a mixture of black acrylic and dish soap wash. This I wiped away so the black would stay in the cracks but not on the bricks. Total build time- 3 minutes. Total paint time- something like ten minutes. (Will add photos to the website) Next point- most spray paints will melt the living snot out of XPS, check my FAQ at the bottom of the Kickstarter. Final point, I will definitely have instructions on the website, but trust me, you don't need them. Nothing goes together easier. As far as my kid situation goes, my wife is a superhero, if she wasn't, I would be drowned under a tide of dirty diapers (what an image). And, finally, the stretch goal. I can't offer a dice tower because, unfortunately, it's hard to reward people with something they already have.... in other words, it's crazy easy to make a dice tower out of the pieces that come with the castle package... I did it in about ten minutes and will be posting photos on the update tomorrow. Also, *spoiler alert* I'm including photo's of our newest piece "Broken Wall". All you crazy war gamers have been asking for something like this because apparently you just love to blow stuff up!

This is true, and the reason we included siege rules in the Brushfire rulebook.

Anyway, keeping an eye on this. Will see if I can spare the funds.
