This past sunday I hosted a day of wargaming for the first time at my house with a bunch of my warhammer buddies and it was a great time, with one little exception. I mean, I had plenty of room, lots of tables, a great ork horde to field, and even tons of drinks and snacks for my guests, but you know what I didn't have? TERRAIN!!! It was a little embarrassing to use cereal boxes as walls, six-packs of beer as buildings, and shot glasses as objectives.

Listen up Modest Magic, I need some terrain NOW, get to work!!!!!!!!!

Hey Wargamers in the DC/VA/MD area (ie: the Beltway), check these groups out!

So, where are the stretch goals, or even just one?? I think you'd see a boost in pledges if you put one on there!

Are you stumped / do you need ideas for it, perhaps? I'd get it up there ASAP to keep this thing rolling . Almost at $5500 now, but it'd be nice to keep soaring!

Tonight I promise! I've been busy working on broken wall variations! And if anyone has ideas they think sound fun then let me have em! :-)

-Probably a pipe dream, but- circular pieces / options! I can't envision how this would be done, assuming you're cutting a flat piece, without having to cut basically the top view of it and stack a lot of them, which is impractical... but you can see how that would be in high demand if it were possible!

-End-caps that are pre-cut to match the small pieces, rather than having to cut down a larger battlement (I think this would be a very popular piece, assuming it could be pretty cheap, too).

-A gated / grilled door to go on the large opening in the wall. A gated / grilled door for the small openings probably isn't possible, but I think you could get the resolution for it on the main door... but it would probably need to be cut from a thinner material to not look cheesy (not sure if you can cut wood or thin acrylic / polycarbonate, etc).

-On that note, cutting of different materials! Perhaps an example of what could be done (maybe with a better machine if a certain goal is reached, say $7,500 or $10,00). Possibilities are really high here... I have access to a laser cutter at work, and the things that could be done with a personal one are many and awesome!

The only way I can think of incorporating these into stretch goals are, "If we reach this goal, I will produce _______ terrain, and everyone at _____ level or higher gets _____ pieces free!".

Or, "If we reach this goal, I'll be able to get a machine that can do _______, allowing me to produce ______" and repeat the freebie phrase above.

Am I allowed to say this since I think I'd be a recipient of said freebies .

Excited to see what you have planned, and hope these ideas help! If nothing else, just different shapes (particularly the end cap for the small pieces, that will be in high demand!) would be very popular, I'm sure . Also, it's possible that a circular feature would be possible using just the square wall pieces, but having a circular floor, which would be able to be cut using the same method. I'm not sure what the curve of the wall would look like (the larger the curve, the less noticable the joints would be) but it's a thought

Wow! You really put some thought into that! I have a lot of drafted ideas but with my limited machine it takes me much longer to actually produce a piece then design one. That being said I think with the update I will add some pics of some of my designs that haven't made it to the floor yet. In light of your wish list I think you will be pleasantly suprised.
As far as cutting thinner pieces to fit I had considered using something like balsa wood for the gate and I will look into that.
Now, when it comes to cutting different material that will be based largely on the machine that I end up with. Not to mention almost any other material will make the cost of the terrain go up pretty quick.
This is why I love kickstarter right here. What better way to design a product then to make a prototype and let the future customer decide what to change? Seems like a pretty good way to do it if you ask me. Thanks for all your feedback RiTides and keep it coming!

Yes I could. There are some things that would have to be different but these could definitely be done. When we first discussed what kind of terrain we were going to make this was the original level of detail. The problem that kept coming back was price. We are dedicated to making affordable terrain, as the market is already pretty flooded with high level expensive terrain. If I could make something like this that was nice but also cheap, I would do it in a heartbeat. So the answer is yes I could make something like this, I'm just not sure what they would cost the customer.

Now you've got me really curious! I think posting pictures of your designs (even just a 2D sketch) would be fantastic. If you are doing it all in 2D, but would like a 3D view, you could send me a dimensioned drawing and I could put it into 3D (Solidworks) for you. It'd basically just be adding some thickness to the drawing, and rotating and taking a sweet screenshot of it. But I have a feeling you already have a 3D view of it... if not, and you'd like me to do so, PM me and I could do it tomorrow night

Looking forward to seeing that stretch goal and the designs you mentioned for it!

Also, regarding your last post I am all in favor of your CHEAP terrain approach. Where else could I get TWO 3' x 3' x 1' castles... for $150 . It really fills a niche that is lacking in wargaming terrain. I do think people will be craving "accessory" pieces, such as houses or the like, so if your designs have plans for that it may be good. But I also have reservations about that, because as you say, there are many expensive options available for those, that this likely wouldn't stack up well against in regards to detail. So I could go either way on it... and as I said, looking forward to seeing the designs you've already thought up, I have a feeling they'll be awesome!

Edit: Just thought of another idea- a wall piece with slits in it.... classic for castles, archers tend to fire from inside and not just on top. Possibly only appropriate for the large wall sections, but maybe useful for small ones, too. Perhaps people would have the choice for slits or no slits? Related, "flying buttresses". A square hole in a wall piece, allowing another piece to be stuck out at a right angle from it, of whatever shape you can imagine! Pic below... That's it for now, I promise

Just whipped this up for you RiTides

I think that answers a couple of your questions nicely

hmmm I tried putting a pic in there but breaks when I refresh... am I doing something wrong?

Also, it's freakish how close you are getting to my update pics... are you peeking at my computer?

I think your hosting service doesn't allow direct linking.

You can feel free to attach pics to your posts as an alternate way to get up here (the only downside being they always appear at the bottom of the post).

I'll attach it to my post to get it up:

Awesome, it does indeed! A few of those floor pieces to allow for a circular tower could be quite cool, I think . Not sure how it would butt up against the rest of a structure, but it definitely has potential.

And I have been known to spy...

Looks excellent! Only thing on my current wishlist that's missing is a large wall piece with windows. Everything else is perfect, I think

Also, I would edit the main page to show the stretch goal. I actually didn't even know about the "Update" tabs until this Kickstarter, and I think a lot of people don't click on them. Just editing the stretch goal into the top of the first page's post, and directing people to click on the Update tab for more details, would be very helpful towards "hooking" people and getting them to see all the great concepts you're showing there. This is what I've seen most other Kickstarters do, and it helps get everyone onboard with trying to reach the new goal.

Last question- had you already made / thought of having the window piece? It makes sense, since I'm sure you've been thinking about this for a while now

Made in us
Been Around the Block

Yeah the window was in my original design for the castle but my little machine just couldn't make it work.

As for big walls with windows, if your interested, I'm interested. I will get back to you on that one.

And thank you for the advice about the update tab I will do that right now

And it's over $6K! That $7.5K is look extremely attainable, I'm hoping it can get up over $10K by the end.

Love the new stuff! Just out of curiousity the "motherload" doesn't really have a quantifier on how many castles worth etc that it will receive. Maybe listing out how much that tier will actually get will get that last slot filled?

Blue, are you talking about how much the Mother Load reward itself gets or how much additional pieces if we hit the stretch goal?

Correct the Mother Load it self gets. It states "make that castle a few times" which I assume means 3+? \

A single castle being 175 single walls, 60 battlements, 8 large walls, 4 gate pieces 12 small floors, 10 doorways. and 4 large floors.

Would that put the mother load at:
525 Singles
180 Battlements
24 large walls
12 Gate Pieces
36 Small Floors
12 Large Floors
30 Doors

or more?

Ahh, Gotcha. Yes that is correct. Plus I plan on including at least one of each of the large broken wall concepts in with "The Mother Load" It would be a shame to have all that castle and not be able to break parts You are correct that I should have listed the pieces but since the reward has been selected I can't edit it. I can post the actual numbers in the main body of the project though

People seem to spring for the high limited edition kickstarter levels pretty quickly, anyway... I'll be surprised if that last slot stays around much longer!

I'm thinking about running a contest with terrain being given away as the reward... should I just post it on here or start a new thread? If I should do a new thread is there a place reserved for contests, or just put it in news and rumors?

Likely keep it in this thread, but do keep in mind you can't hold a Raffle as part of a Kickstarter (its in their rules)

gotcha. It's actually not a raffle its more like a writing contest and it has nothing to do with Kickstarter per se. I may just wait until the kickstart is over because I don't want to violate any of their rules.

Sounds like a good idea to wait as a just in case, but you could certainly post it up in this News & Rumors forum since it is "news".

It could be put in this thread; however, since you didn't create this thread you should probably make a new one at that point, since you won't have the ability to edit the title of this thread to point people to the contest.

If you do decide to make a new thread, just keep in mind that for small companies and the like, usually just one thread is appropriate for this forum, so you could just continually edit the title to match whatever current "news" were in the works (i.e., a contest after the kickstarter, a new feature on the website in the coming months, new line of terrain that gets voted on by kickstarters , etc). So, imo it'd make sense for you to make your own thread for it after the Kickstarter ends and have that be "your" thread in this forum from then on for Modest Magic terrain announcements.

Absolutely loving the $10k stretch goal, and you're almost at $9K already!! Might have to space the next one further out or maybe not, and just keep rolling with it like this. It's going great!

Pledge rate seems to have slowed down a bit, but still, it's at 11.5K with 4 days to go . Will be interesting to see if it can get up to 15K, but even if not I think this has been a great success to launch your product/company.
