So I got my airbrush and started to try and paint fire. Here are the results on some practice pieces I had laying around. Please Comment.

As always tips, tricks and advice are wanted. Thank you.

It looks great. I keep seeing a face in the flames on the devilfish above the sensor.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Only face I can see is from the model design, the two side circles and the window for the mouth.

I think these would work well on something like Dark Eldar due to the sharp edges you've managed to get. Over than that they look pretty cool.

Now that you mention it, it would look rather cool on a speed freaks army.

Airbrush tutorials, Books, etc. I wanted to study up on how to do it. I used a SM disc base as a template. ( It was the smallest circle i could find )

How did you do that? That was awesome

"Suffering is Faith, Faith is Strength.

Generations have suffered with the same devotion that we can offer but once. Still, our Faith leads us through these dark times like a beacon. It will guide us to triumph over these abominations. The devilfish looks neat I really like it. The template is a little overdone and the orkish thing doesn't look like flames. For a first attempt it is great though!

Got milk?

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

PM me if you are interested in Commission work.

Looks pretty neat... Just a nitpick though, the flame color on the template are reversed. Fire coming from a flamethrower or similar device will be the brightest at the point of origin and darken to red at the end.

of you can look at it in a different way...
the template is painted as a giant ball of fire (like a cometh) not as fire coming from a weapon

Wow great job, considering that your "template " was a 25mm base from a space marine fig the result is quite impressive. Keep it up.

The template is ball of fire vice comething from a weapon. I can make another if you are interested. The ork plate was just something i had to use that was laying around. the hammerhead was a side project that never came to be. I was going for a true fire effect.

The Hammerhead is a Ork trukk or battlewagon conversion. I havent decided yet , that has huge tires on the back and a ork engine. At least that was the Idea. Cause orks tend to salvage a little HAHA.

It's a great start and you have the basic technique down, but your flames need to get hotter at the base and cooler at the tips/edges.

Here is an example of what I mean, see how I have pure white 'hot spots' and the flames in the background and the top are cooler shades of red?

You should also buy/make a decent flame template:

If you post through your technique I can see if you can improve anything - what are you using as a candy layer?

I would experient with a couple of different candy colours - I went with a red and yellow tone made from GW's old ink range.

What colours are you spraying your flames in?

You may wish to try what I did:

First couple of layers sprayed in orange, candy red.

A couple of layers sprayed in yellow, candy red.

A couple of layer sprayed in white, candy yellow.

A final layer in white, with a selective candy of yellow, leaving some areas of pure white.

Like I said, I reckon you'd benefit massively from a decent flame template - as the curves in your flames are all the same (which is not natural looking at all)

Are you a planning on glossing it? My mind is split - every single hotrod flame job on a car/computer case/xbox/bike is covered in a lovely thick gloss, which looks amazing. Not sure about mini's though.

I use yellow, red, orange and white for fire spray
I found those templates before
I used a 22mm base so i had no flexibility haha
The gloss I am debatingon because it is orkish but am wanting to make it look decent

I see the face! You can see it in the top pic, looks like a 'little green man' type of alien.

Awesome fire effect, I love the template and that big blast is great - really looks explosive. I may have to try this, thanks for the motivation
