From what I have heard about new 6'th edition fluff rumor ( the book itself is coming out on July 7'th thank the Emperor... ) is litle strange. According to it
Spoiler:
Emperor dies and one of the loyalist Primarchs returns, also Tau are now under protection of Ultramarines as they are seen as ultimate anti-Chaos weapons

I found this rumor hardly to be true ( except maybe second and third part ) as that would move setting of 40k well nto 42'nd millennium. How much are these rumors valid?

The galaxy is the Emperor's, and anyone or anything who challenges that claim is an enemy who must be destroyed.
" What is the strongest weapon of mankind? The god-machines of the Adeptus Mechanics? No! The Astartes Legions? No! The tank? The lasgun? The fist? No to all! Courage, and courage alone stands above them all!"
"A good soldier obeys without question. A good officer commands without doubt."
"What do I ask of my officers? Merely that they do their duty with fire in their bellies and a prayer on their lips."
"Though our tanks and artillery are mighty, it is the vast ranks of Imperial Guardsmen that shall trample the enemy to dust - let them come."
"Give me a gun, a google-eyed alien to shoot it at, and I’ll die a happy man."
"As the Emperor protects, so must we."
"We're the Death Korps of Krieg, son. Did you think that was just a pretty name? We never retreat. We fight and we die, that's the Krieg way."
"What I cannot crush with words I will crush with the tanks of the Imperial Guard!"
"Your foe is well equipped, well-trained, battle-hardened. He believes his gods are on his side. Let him believe what he will. We have the tanks on ours."

We'll be happy to confirm that when we've all read the fluff! I think that would be interesting if it happened though; I'd like some kind of advancement in the fluff. It wouldn't change much honestly; your average Imperial Guardsman would still shout "For the Emperor!" since he's more of a god than anything else.

Actually, I hope the first part is true. Succession wars are some of the most interesting historically (and often the bloodiest). Are there any surviving Primarchs who could claim the Emperor's mantle? Heck, just about every system governor or fleet commander will make a bid for the purple! meanwhile Chaos and the Xenos will gloat and run amuck! Interesting times indeed ...

Well for someone to return, they'd have to still be alive and pretty much all loyalist primarchs are futtbucked in some way or another. Half of them are dead and the other half in the warp getting dead.
Also, I think we all obviously know that the only primarch able to succeed is Roboute, spiritual liege of everyone but he's got necrotizing fasciitis on his brain.

Can you imagine the scale of the civil war though if he or some other primarch came back and declared the high lords of terra heretics? This is definitely going on my wishlist.

Well, there are sources showing there maybe glimmers of hope for a primarch returning. Remember the warp distorts normal time and only a primarch or the emperor himself could remain pure within the warp itself. So with gamesworkshops love affair for the wolves currently, entertertaining the idea is a grand one.

^ This.
I cannot see GW letting the emperor off of the golden throne. As previously stated it is assumed that all of the loyalist primarchs are dead or, at best, lost. As far as the Ultramarines protecting a Xenos, that just doesn't seem even possible. The only organization that can get away with having an alliance with a xenos is the Inquisition. I don't think the Tau would even allow themselves to be 'placed under protection'. Calgar: "Hey you guys would be really good at fighting chaos so we're going to protect you now. Oh yea and by being under our protection you've kinda got to do what we tell you to at all times or we'll cyclone torpedo your race back to the 30 thousands. Welcome to the IoM!" *hands them a gift basket*

Back to the Emprah, the only way I could get behind the Emperor coming back is such.

He is reborn but before he can do much his momentary absence from the throne has allowed daemons to manifest in the palace. The GK prognosticars or whatever immediately sense that the Emprah is back but Terra is under siege by daemons so they redeploy almost all of the brotherhoods back to Terra to aid the custodes in keeping the threat contained. After everything settles down the Emperor looks upon what has become of his dream and is furious. He disbands the High Lords of Terra and completely dismantles the Ecclesiarchy. This leads many governors and other forces in the imperium to secede, turn to chaos, or what have you. This leads to the IoM having to go on a lengthy "house cleaning" campaign.

Is it a great plot hook? No, not really. But I think its a hell of a lot better then "hey the galaxy's biggest bad ass is back!"

Oh, indeed. So colorful with lots of interesting story potential! Bureaucracies being what they are, I'd think most of the functionaries would side with the High Lords, including the Imperial cult. They're fat pigs swilling at a trough: they wouldn't want it overturned, the Emperor's Will be damned!

Supposedly when Alexander the Great was on his deathbed, his reply to his generals' question who would inherit the empire was,"To the strongest." Now the Emperor isn't in any condition to say who should inherit, but most of the powers in the Imperium will follow the example of Alexander's Successors and tear the Imperium apart.

An Imperial Civil War would be a great way to expand the story a bit IMO. The High Lords would try to maintain the status quo, however I can't see many space marine chapters siding with them.

This would be GLORIOUS. I could see Ultramar end up pulling a Ptolemy though... wonder which chapter would end up being the ones who end up fruitlessly battering themselves upon the defenses of the Ultramar Sector...

I can see them trying to write ally options into the fluff. Some of the rummors I heard was they were bringing allied rules into the game, kinda like they did with Fantasy. By having the space marines become big brother to the Tau it makes it easier to create scenarios and rules for allies. I wouldn't be supprised if they did this with most armies.

I guess the Emperor could die, but I expect that the IoM would figure out a way to keep a lid on that info. Remember when Macharius was declared dead/MIA they had another civil war of sorts. On a much smaller scale than the Horus Heresy, but I think it went for about 70-100 years. Not sure on that time frame. Something big like news of the Emperor's death could probably shatter the IoM.

If the emperor dies the astronomican dies, so unless they re-introduce the star child as definite canon this won't happen, and the whole UM protecting Tau was a troll rumour, I'm sure it is, I mean the UM only conducted the damocles crusade to try and wipe them out.

Ok my thoughts:
Emperor dies.... isn't he already physically dead? Doesn't the golden throne just keep his soul tethered to his body? So thats not really much of a change...
Return of a Primarch... possible as some aren't known to be dead just mia, but what would this serve other than to stick a silly SC into the game? So I doubt this one.
Ultrasmurfs adopting Tau... really? I mean REALLY? The IoM is the most Xenophobic empire ever to have existed, just being on the same planet as an alien can get you killed...

EDIT: If anything the smurf/tau thing is probably a rumour blown way out of proportion, it may just be a scenario example of allies in the new BrB that someone's seen and gone OMG ULTRASMURFS ARE ADOPTING THE TAU!!!

Here is the possible Primarchs who could come back

Russ comes back from the warp though is unlikely to claim anything
Vulkan He'stan finds Vulkan Primarch but unlikely because Vulkan is minor Primarch
Corax same as Russ
Khan is found but again unlikely
Lion wakes and claims throne.but the SW wouldn't have it
Dorn is dead
Manus is dead
Sanguinius is dead

That leaves Guilliman. And knowing Matt and his IMPOSSIBLE HEALING.INSIDE STASIS FIELDS then that's hows its going. Smurfs gonna burn.

Or Grey Knights seeing as they are directly descended from his "geneseed".

Was that confirmed? I thought he was believed dead after they recovered his engraved skeletal hand but no corpse to confirm his death?

If some of the primarchs return, loyalist or traitor it will give GW or forgeworld a chance to make new models for apocalypse. Who wouldn't want a model of a primarch if only because it would be badass.

Why would SWs care if Lion took the throne in particular? I mean it isn't like the SWs and DA have an outright hatred, it is more like just a rivalry. Also Guilliman is dead no matter what. Even if you can heal in a stasis field he is dead because they tossed him in there the moment he died.

Thats a good point actually, there are so many non GW primarch models out there maybe GW is finally jumping on the band wagon...

Just looked at this:
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Rogal_Dorn

It says its not his skeleton only his fist, it may well have been that his skeleton was whole in previous fluff (as space marine was written in 1993) but in newer fluff its just a single skeletal hand.

I still don't get why people want to advance the plot so much, lol.

The plot has been in neutral, slowly rolling down a slight decline for twenty years. It's a macguffin for a table-top miniatures game, not some kind of narrative.

Mankind vs aliens vs chaos. Lots of shooting, some grim darkness, and only war. What does "advancing the plot" even mean to the game? Why does it need to be advanced? Will you suddenly stop playing games, or start, against a specific army type because the fluff has changed?

Oh, and whichever idiot suggested it was Matt Ward who wrote the fluff about people claiming Guilliman was slowly healing in the stasis field, that actually comes from the 2nd Edition Codex: Ultramarines written by Rick Priestley (you know, one of the guys who created 40K). Good lord, some of you will blame Matt Ward for anything your little minds can come up with.

The good news is, these rumors are almost 100% likely to be garbage. No need for GW to make any significant changes to the fluff, so I don't see why they would.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Yeah I was gonna say, for as long as Roboute Guilliman has been around, the fluff about him supposedly healing inside his stasis pod has also been around.

Also I hope the background doesn't advance. The whole point is that the setting is a backdrop. Nothing more. It also fits in with the idea that the Imperium isn't really advancing at all and is sort of stuck in the position it's in.

I guess another way to look at it is that the plot will advance at a glacial drift speed. Meaning its possible to bring back a primarch but not largely change the fluff other than adding a bit with ''so and so has returned'' dun-dun-duuuuunnn!
