It appears from the latest White Dwarf that Forge World will be producing a book called Aeronautica that will detail over 40 flyers. This is important because maybe the real rules for the Storm Eagle will be a little better!

.. actually looking at the snippet I don't think this does refer to the epic scale game
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Aeronautica-Imperialis/Rules_and_Accessories?filter_reset=1
the models and the 40K reference would tend to suggest otherwise no ?

I do hope it is for 40k, updated and compiled rules for the various fliers would be nice as their rules are all over the place from the numerous IA #'s and the apocalypse books.

It looks pretty clear that this will be for 'standard' 40K, and coincides nicely with the increased presence of flyers in 6th.

Reds8n and mugginns appear correct, unless there has been a major intellectual breakdown at Forgeworld, that evidence points to only one thing ... and it isn't Aeronautica Imperialis ... it is a fliers book for 40k.

It explicitely includes rules for the Storm Eagle and is advertised for standard scale games. So it is not the old book.
But most certainly it will borrow heavily from the old book, which is not a bad thing (at least for people not owning the old book).
BTW it was predicted by Harry IIRC

I guess we will be seeing updated rules for all of those old Imperial fliers from FW like the Lightning, but I hope to see some new ones too for armies that don't have flyers yet as well as some nifty dogfight rules for use in regular 40K games, though perhaps regular 40K is not the right scale for those sorts of rules and is probably what Aeronautica Imperialis was created for.

How many existing flyers are produced by Games Workshop. Assuredly this will include existing flyers, both from the Codex's and the Imperial Armour books, much like previous Imperial Armour including rules for Basilisks etc, so how many would that equate to being new? Does this also take into account the epic scale sections that previous books had too? Hopefully they aren't scrimping us too much, though at least dozen new flyers rules sounds alright. ....When I say rules though are they including variants of the same model (Valkyrie/Vendetta), and thus some of the models won't be more than upgrade kits. =/ A bit of a dour attitude towards the actual amount of new content, but if it does go for a reasonable price (...sure), it probably will be as decent a read as the rest of the series. ^^
Oh and it damn well better include some Traitor Astartes rules. Allowing Chaos to use versions of Imperial Marine craft is alright, but I do hate that there's no real chaos marine exclusive models (yes I am discounting the traitor navy flyers here). =(

Yea, the average 40k board probably has no room for aerial dogfights
I wonder if Necrons will get a dedicated air superiority fighter

We use Aeronautica Imperialis rules for our Apocalypse battles. They work well when you are playing a huge floor war like they used to at the US Games Days. Ah memories.

Right, which is why I changed it to 'non-hovering'. Stuff like the vulture/valkyrie/stormwords I can understand. But stuff like the Dakkajet... well, I guess not everyone can play 40k in their local gym. Unless they're doing a 'flyby' system. That'd be cool.

Yea, thats really the only way for things going near the speed of sound could work
Similar to FoW, though in FoW there are a lot of restrictions with aircraft such as the dangers of hitting your own troops so they have to be far away and stuff

That's more or less how flier rules have worked in the past, so I would expect something similar. Either that or they will just be skimmers with some extra rules; it's not like the distance/speeds in 40k are super realistic.

Forgeworld is rushing out a supplement based entirely around a brand new unit type before anyone even gets the handle on the new rules (not that FW ever had a handle on the rules at all)? This can only end in disaster.

Why would you assume they're 'rushing' this out?
The 6th edition rules must have been in development for way more than a year now, so this would be FW updating their IA flyer rules to match the new 6th Ed flyer rules.
If anything it sounds like a GREAT-timed release for once.
