Hello everybody! First post on Dakka, and I was intending on starting an ongoing report about my new SM project, not sure if I can start a topic in here and say it's ongoing, or start it somewhere else and then get the thread transferred here, but regardless, here I am.

Having loved SM (especially the DA) but feeling like not following another persons colour scheme, I decided to come up with my own chapter, the "Boneguard". If anyone's curious, I'll post up the fluff, but I might as well wait to see if anybody actually checks this out first!

So far I've only painted three guys (and I'm not a master painter, at all, any CC is welcome and appreciated) and this is the Sergeant of the squad I'm working on from the front.....

And from the back.

And that's the squad, as of yet. I'm not sure whether it will be a 5-10 man squad, but for now, I'm thinking a 5 man. The sarge's other marines were painted first, and were test models drafted into the squad. Their paints a lot cakier too.. Still working on getting smoothness on my models.

Anyways, thanks for looking, and any questions/criticism/anything really is appreciated.

P.S. if the images aren't visible, could somebody explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

Hello again! Didn't seem to be noticed, but I shall continue regardless! I've continued my work on the first Boneguard squad, and after this I'm planning on painting either my librarian, or my termies.

By the way, quick Boneguard fluff; the Boneguard (1st company, in this case) are a Chapter of Space Marines recently rediscovered after excursions into the Galactic West. Imperial Guard Regiments, steeled for intense combat with Xenos were met by a system of planets completely peaceful and held by this mysterious Chapter. According to their reports, the Boneguard were founded dozens of centuries ago, created to guard the various far-flung relics and hallowed sites of the Adeptus Astartes. The 1st Company, and indeed all companies, work as completely different entities, taking up residence in systems of historic and strategic importance. Each Company only has a loose idea of where the others are and their current status. In fact, the only ones who know how to even contact them are their Chapter Master, Archrusian, and his Chief Librarian, Itheorn. The Boneguard are loosely organized around the Codex Astartes, but do not follow it to the letter. Their tactics are the reverse of most Chapters, waiting for the enemy to come to them, then launching devastating surprise attacks, annihilating their enemies before they can defile their sacred lands. Boneguard are rumoured to even take up poses like statues in the sanctuaries and graveyards they stand sentinel over, heretics not realizing until too late that they have walked into an ambush. A long time ago, the Imperium directed where the Boneguard were needed, but communication fell by the wayside over the decades, and now the Boneguard follow their own directives, for good or ill.

By the way, the helmet and power fist are supposed to be that colour (they are actually painted, not just highlighted). The idea is that the Boneguard take wargear from fallen marines on ancient battlefields that were never retaken, strip the old Chapter colour off of them and re-purpose them for brand new conquests, for the Boneguard and for the original Chapter.

This is one of the two final marines in the squad, working on legs. The reason they're taking so long is because, in my amazing foresight, I decided to basecoat light coloured minis black. Sooo many coats of Rakarth Flesh and Ushabti later..

And him from the back. Not terribly impressive, but oh well. WIP.

Here's the squad (not quite done, as can be seen) led by their amazing Sergeant Claudius! One day, they shall crush foes in the name of the Emperor.

Crush the xenos and take their Oreos!

Anyways, that's the work I've done so far. They take awhile to work on at the moment, since I've just started trying to paint marines, especially in these lighter colours. It's a lot of work.

As always, please take a look around. All comments and suggestions are welcome!

Thanks, mate! He's the first marine that I got the scheme correct on, spent a looot more time than I should have on him. Ah well, painting takes time.

How do you paint them? im considering painting my marines like that now, just replace the grey with black

Let's see... Chaos Black undercoat (spray-paint of course), a coat or two of Rakarth flesh, then close to four or five coats of Ushabti bone, with a quick wash of Agrax Earthshade in the recesses to get them starker. With my WIP guys I've decided on heavier highlights (makes things stand out INFINITELY better) so I mixed a pot of my old Bleached Bone and Skull White to make my highlight. In the chest recesses and joints it's XV-88 + Agrax Earthshade.

And update time! WIP marines from yesterday have gotten an hour or two more work on them (was playing video games at the same time so slower than it could be )

Here's the first guy from last time (I love painting cheagles ) with his body actually painted. I've tried my hand at extreme highlights now and am working on getting them right still, but I think they come out well in this shot. By the way, the stripped ceramite is Mechanicus Standard Grey with Fortress grey (or whatever the new version is called) highlights.

This is a slightly different angle.. It looked like it caught the highlights better before, can't tell if it does right now.

And his back. Not terribly interesting. Highlights are not great, but I'm working on it...

And the second guy, super cool. I actually hate this chest. It makes no sense. It looks like a giant speaker was built into it. Like a Noise Marine!

The final back. Next update I'm planning on complete marines.. But that'll probably take awhile. We'll see. Heck, I might even have time to start my Libby or Termies

Anyways, hope you enjoy! Comment if you like (or don't, that's cool too) any feedback is welcome

Nice work dude! The bone colour has worked really well for you. Not too keen on the tan coloured tubing in the joints, I would rather they were a black or silver, as they are they detract from the actual armour colour.

I particularly like the black helmet for the sergeant, not sure why, it just looks good!

Huh, didn't think of that. I'll try a test model of it and see how it looks! I tried the brownish colour because I was going for a desert-ish thing, but the tan plates are the most important!

Thanks for your input, Cain!

Black is always a good colour to contrast bone, so is red. The bolters and other weapons would look good in a real bright red!

interesting paintscheme
i like the black helmeted guy, but the bone colored helmets dont really have enough contrast to make them stick out...
it might be worth the consideration to paint the face of the helmet black and the rest bone and sergeants with whole black helmets.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

I'm diggin the marines you have done so far! For the regular marines helmets, perhaps you could pick out parts of the helmet and paint them in a brown-ish color? It would break up the solid tan color, yet still tie in with the desert scheme you said you wanted.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

Hrrmmm.. This is hard perhaps they could be white, with a brown wash? So they're new helmets, while the sgt. has the old?

Or maybe their helmets could be terminatus stone or something?

Thanks! by the way, I'm going to try extreme highlights on the helmets, I think that may make them stand out more. The white idea... It didn't pan out XD

Done the fourth marine and nearly the fifth. Will post when I'm home. Heads definitely looked better just highlighted, not grey thanks for the feedback though everybody! Makes me want to keep going and thanks chaplain!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alright, update... However many I've done + 1.

First up is something I thought I'd just snap while convenient, which is the eventual army that I'm looking to complete first, minus my libby, who was not glued onto a base yet. The picture is not great quality, my apologies... Still, you get the gist. Vanilla marines, led by either the fluffy chief libby Itheorn, or the Chapter Master Archrusian (who in game-terms is Vulkan He'stan, because his chapter upgrades suit the Boneguard playstyle). He'll be custom-made down the road sometime.

A couple of you mentioned making the helmet stand out and I thought "Hey! The new version of skull white is called something ceramite!" so it would make sense they have non-aged stripped helmets, unlike the sgts aged one, but that didn't work.. Straight white was tried first, but I forgot to take a picture of it.

And here's marine 4! He's my favourite so far because of his pretty eyes I did more extreme highlighting on the head too, just so it would stand out more despite being the same colour as the plate. A different colour for a standard marine almost seems strange.. No other chapters in recent memory do that, do they?

And his back... Nothing to see here really..

Here's his gun. There are many others like it, but this is his. I didn't paint it red (yet) because I was wondering; wouldn't people instinctively think "Dark Angels" when they see red weapons?

And the final marine, still in progress. I'm going to have to invest in a camera this pic didn't turn out very well.

Anyways, as always, please leave thoughts and comments!

Hello again everybody! Hopefully this isn't automatically appended, because that seems to not change that I've updated it.. Regardless,

Here is the first 3 (of 4) tac marines with their proud new squad markings! Boneguard first company, second squad!

And their proud sergeant. I've cleaned his marking up a bit since... It's a little sketched here.

Only one left to go before Termies and Libby

He's gone neglected for so long....

And I'm thinking this will be my chapter symbol, what with their penchant for picking up old weaponry and wargear and re-purposing it. I'm not sure where it will be on general models, but we'll see

And tomorrow (hopefully) I will be putting up the final tac marine to round out the squad and maybe some WIP Termies!

Cheers!

Have to say that I love the colours on these marines. I also like that they pretend to be statues while the enemy just walk past

Thanks SilverMK2! Yeah, their tactics were sort of inspired by some of the Alpha Legion's (them being my favourite old Legion).

Update time! I have now officially finished the first squad! (Confusingly designated as the 2nd Squad)

Here is the fifth and final marine of my first squad of Boneguard! So excited

His marking identifying him as part of Second Squadron..

Boneguard, First Company, Second Tactical Squad, led by Veteran Sergeant Claudius. May they strike down many Xenos and Heretics in the Emperor's name.

Here is the next squad on the chopping block; my Black Reach Termies. I realize they're probably going to look alarmingly similar to Deathwing Terminators, but they'll have Boneguard markings and their signature ancient stripped ceramite wargear. I'm thinking their powerfists and their helmets.

This is my freehand design of the Boneguard's insignia, the Ouroboros, representing their reclamation of wargear. It turned out pretty well I think, considering I've never done freehand before hope it looks good to you guys!

And that's all! Hopefully next update I'll have the Rakarth undercoat+ on my termies, maybe start on the Libby at the same time.

Cheers!

Cool colour scheme. It looks a little bleak though, an additional bright alternate colour for some detail here or there will make a world of difference - maybe the eagle insignia or something?

Love the red markings, especially the ouroubouros.

In the middle of the forest :(

After looking over these and thinking about it a bit, some things I figured might spruce them up would be doing the terminator helmets in a dark or muted red. Also, for the storm bolters I was thinking a very dark green might be not too bad looking either. The only thing I'd worry about is it making them look too much like Deathwing. Finally, perhaps you could do some sort of freehand on the backs of the power fists? I rarely see people do it, perhaps for good reason, but I think it could be neat.

When you say the helmets in a dark red, do you mean the terminators? Or all of them? Because I can only think of like one chapter that does different coloured armour then the helmets, it's not very common. And do you mean freehand on the terminator power fists?

In the middle of the forest :(

Yeah just the terminators, I fixed that in my earlier post, I realized after I pressed submit that I might not have been...completely clear about that... I only meant the terminator's fists. I've noticed that terminator power fists tend to be a bit plainer than power armoured ones. I've seen some people do the knuckles metallic, but other than that...not much. Personally, I see them as a bit of a blank surface to put something interesting on. One other thing that came to mind just now is perhaps as a change of pace, for the terminators at least, the tubing and other metallic bits, they might look good in a brass or bronze rather than a silver.

Hrm. Well I just got the ouroboros down... I don't know of any other symbology I could put on the power fists. I generally change them to the stripped ceramite look, like I did for the sgt. Would that work, with freehand in white or something on them?

Made in ca

In the middle of the forest :(

Maybe, somehow I never imagined power fists to be made of ceramite though, I figured they'd be something different designed for the power field or something. You could put your ouroboros on it if you think that'd be good, but perhaps something that goes with the name Boneguard. Just off the top of my head... A small crossbones with one end of one bone being sharpened into a blade or sword? Or maybe something that the marine himself would put on, like a kill tally or scribbles to represent scripture?
