As a follow up to my previous thread (about obscure or underrated games that, in your opinion, needs more credit), this thread is the opposite - what games do you think are terrible and/or overrated, and yet for some absurd reason have a large following.

For me, its Halo and CoD.
I don't really see the appeal behind them, I really don't.
Oh, And I'm throwing in Battlefield as well, for being a blatant CoD clone. I don't care what everyone else says, it looks like fething CoD to me.

Ok, after a bit of reflection, hate is a bit strong of a word. Games that you are disinterested in or think are overrated might be more accurate.

The biggest problem with Call of Duty the people playing it rather than the game itself IMO...
As for Halo...
You need friends to play it with. Becomes a lot more fun then IMO.

Dunno, I don't really hate most games. If you said "bored of" or "don't care about", that's a different matter.

Even WoW, which I constantly mock, I don't really hate. It's just boring.

I don't care for the hack and slash of Diablo.

I wouldn't say I hate it though, I played the first one for an ungodly amount of hours, but then I found Fallout, Baldurs Gate Planescape:Torment, Icewind Dale etc. After those, Diablo just seemed like an arcade game.

Also not a fan of JRPGs.

Soul Calibur.

Some cool character designs, and the character creator is OK, but otherwise a bit crap.

Also, Call of Duty and its ilk. Gah.

bland enemies (clearance sell on masks it seems)
bland weapons (a green machine gun and a red machine gun does not make 2 different guns!)
bland vehicular combat
ending was god awful

The whole thing just felt unfinished and half arsed to me. Then they release info on the second game, stating that now you have video options that just about every other pc game has had since forever, and people go crazy about it.

Yeah, I thought it was subpar as well. They should have just stuck with single player.
And speaking of subpar and overhyped games that should not have focused on Co-Op, I bloody despised Dead Island.

There's like a total possablity of roughly 10,000 weapons in Borderlands. Some of them are quite similar but there's certainly alot of variation and interesting combinations in there.

Can't really argue with you on bland enviroments point but it's alot better in the DLC...

I've never understood the massive support of Call of Duty, after the COD 4 they're all copies of the previous games with a slight overhaul of the multiplayer combat, also itlooks goddamn awful, the textures are low quality and the campains (espically IW ones) are ridiculous, boring and filled with terrible AI and lots of 'fixed turret moments'.

Any Elder Scrolls game after Daggerfall. I've tried to enjoy them, but I've found them all painfully dull to play.

1. Halo games, they're OK when playing with friends but it's boring playing by yourself.

2. Gears of War games, I don't see the appeal of these games the levels are linear, the combat is boring and the story sucks.

3. Most sports and racing games with a few exceptions.

4. WoW, I played it for a few hours but it's just so boring all I do is talk to some random guy, do quest, collect reward, maybe it get's better later on but right now I'm not having much fun.

Any football manager game.

All mainstream MMORPGS (WoW, GW, ToR etc) i am sure there are some out there that would appeal to me if i had the motivation but i remember trying WoW and just finding it dull. Whats the point of an RPG if the world/story isn't there?

Ass-screed. Man those games are dull. It feels so sterile and impersonal, the grey colour pallet and the effortless spongy parkour plus combat that is initially obtuse and unfair but within an hour or so becomes laughably easy. The cities look good but have no appeal, there's no motivation to explore them, the content is just too sparse.

Also everyone preferring Saints Row compared to GTA 4. I like the fact Rockstar is going for a more grounded realistic approach with it's sandboxes, if you are calling in the airstrikes in the second mission of the game what's next?

Also Liberty city is a believable city (well minimal suspension of disbelief) as well as a great play space. Saints Row's Environ is just a mash of copy paste skyscrapers.

GTA is... grounded... and realistic?

Since fething when? GTA and realism are basically a divorced couple where the husband decided to try being gay after finding out that he turned his ex-wife lesbian-- they have nothing to do with one another, and never really did except for in illusion.

Actually, I'd put GTA on this list. I didn't really enjoy any of them.

I constantly buy games on Steam Sales when they go $5 or below. This usually means I get tons of games a few months after the hype-train settles down.

Bioshock was dull. The mid-game "twist" was nonsensical. The latter half of the game had an absent storyline. Turning into a BigDaddy was rather cool-ish, but nothing came of it in the end.
...and people inexplicably cite it for its story and atmosphere while looking on Bioshock Infinite with glee. I don't get it.

Dead Space was an action game, not the horror game it wanted to be. It had horrible controls that were lifted from Resident Evil; RE's control was the weakest part of the series. It's hard to feel a shred of discomfort when the 3rd person perspective constantly reminds you that you're a power-armored Space Marine running around with powerful weapons and the ability to freeze enemies.
Dead Space 2 at least fixed the controls to be on-par with other control games.

Both games were made by the people that looked at System Shock 2 and missed every strength the game had.

I also actively dislike the obligatory Farmville et al that should go without saying.

To me, it's all about which one you're referring to. The first 2 had storylines that actually had serious moments, and characters I cared about. I was always interested in what would happen next. Saints Row 3 was a disaster. They kill off an important character and only a single person in the game (not you) bothers to care about it, they reward you for being a douchebag at the end with an extended storyline, and it took the idea of being out there and crazy and made it utterly ludicrous to the point where it was an abomination.

SR3 was a terrible experience for me. I don't know how you could screw up what 1 and 2 had going, but they found a way.

WoW. There is nothing really original about it, and I hate the bar-basher combat system.

Also, RPGs in general (except RPG/action hybrids like Borderlands and Mass Effect). They are way too action-light and slow-moving, and yet, it sometimes seems like the favorite genre of every hardcore gamer and his dog.

I would have to say CoD, Mass Effect, and Battlefield.

Mass Effect felt like a gears of war clone done poorly in gameplay, and the story wasn't all that original. The universe was awesome, but not one that I could really get into.

CoD is just.... way too much of a money sink. $60 per game, $45 per game's map packs.... that's $105 that could be spent alot better elsewhere, per year.

I have never liked the Battlefield series. I don't know why.



I do have to put a disclaimer, and say that CoD and CoD 2 were amazing games. I just hate what the series has become.

See im the oposite, I want a realistic FPS, I totally hate CoD and its clones (BF3 is not a clone, its radically diferent), I however do like the fallout universe but dislike the "new" take on it, the older ones had character and i would go as far
as to say FOtactics was better than bugvegas... truelly a bad game that was.
