The bit about KH reminded me of a particular turd.

Epic Mickey.

They had this AWESOME idea, then they scrapped it for a more kiddy oriented one. I did some research as to why, and they talked about doing a research group, and the people in said group were in their 30's and 40's (which seems a bit old to me but whatever). They mentioned in humor that one guy was this grizzled biker guy, and when they showed him the concept art he told them that it sucks, and "Don't change mickey".

Because they're target market is 30+ and rides harleys.

Here's concept art of what they thought of doing

CthuluIsSpy wrote:As a follow up to my previous thread (about obscure or underrated games that, in your opinion, needs more credit), this thread is the opposite - what games do you think are terrible and/or overrated, and yet for some absurd reason have a large following.

For me, its Halo and CoD.
I don't really see the appeal behind them, I really don't.
Oh, And I'm throwing in Battlefield as well, for being a blatant CoD clone. I don't care what everyone else says, it looks like fething CoD to me.

Ok, after a bit of reflection, hate is a bit strong of a word. Games that you are disinterested in or think are overrated might be more accurate.

For me, Halo is about the story. I don't really like the multiplayer either, (there are much better multiplayer games, mainly on the PC) but Halo's story is just awesome. I look forward to new Halo novels about as much as new Halo games.

As for the original question, I don't really understand the obsession with Minecraft. Sure, it's fun, but to really spend all of your time playing a game where the main mechanic is piling blocks around just doesn't make sense when I could be exploring Skyrim or some other awesome game. If I want to be creative I'll make stuff with google sketchup or terragen.

Also I don't understand why people buy COD games. Other than the fun but very brief campaigns, there is really nothing at all to differentiate them from each other, and the multiplayer is quite bland when compared to Arma 2 or even Star Wars Battlefront 2 (which is still active and very fun) The campaigns are pretty well done though, and I actually liked MW2's story, but they are just too short and don't have much replay value. Spec Ops mode is quite fun as well, but really, I wouldn't spend 60 dollars on a COD game just for a short campaign and repetitive unbalanced multiplayer. I just rent them, play through the campaign, and return them.

Also compared to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Slender is not scary at all.

Oh yes, I also don't much care for Team Fortress 2. I don't really know why, but I just don't find it very fun.

Why all the Borderlands hate? I enjoyed it, it wasn't amazing but it was fun to shoot my way through a comicbook dystopia.

Games I didn't like, the Sims series. Micromanagement is not my idea of a good time.

Final Fantasy 7. Yes, I said 7-the one that EVERYONE on the planet worships except for me. I didn't feel much interest in the characters, couldn't care less about the story, and felt it was a waste of my time. Borrowed it from a friend, he had to take it back and it used up so much space on my hard drive (computer) that I deleted it. Borrowed again, same issue. Bought it for Playstation, saved it, the file corrupted and deleted. I threw my hands up in disgust and never again played the game that I had very little interest in to begin with. However, I LOVED Final Fantasy 4 and 6.

I also hate WoW and most other MMORPGs. CoD can suck it too.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Funny thing, I don't actually like Fable.
Then again, I'm only really playing Skyrim right now because I wanted to see what Dawnguard was like.
So far, the only thing I really like is Laura Bailey, who plays a renegade(sort of) vampire.

I will have to agree with the bioshock 'haters'. I finger quote because like the rest of you i don't hate it, just have no real interest. The actual gameplay is just you plodding through scrounging for ammo and murdering folks with a tommy gun like a violent thug. The strategy is presumably there but it's one of those games where utilising the more leftfield playstyles is a handicap.

You look at a game like MGS3 or DE:HR (IMO the pinnacle of Multi-approach play spaces) where all strategies are valid just some are more satisfying. In MGS3 you can find a vantage point and headshot every guard with your silenced 1911 but it's alot less satisfying than painstakingly CQC'ing every sucker in the area. (The DE:HR experience is similar but replace CQC with execution and 1911 with tranq. Gun)

Cutscenes?

I abhor the stories of all MGS games bar 3, so if thats the reason i can understand. The gameplay on the other hand is imo sublime. As well as music, art, humour and attention to period detail.

Oh and Fable 2 was good, apart from all the 'accidental pies' that made my character fat and reduced to stockpiling Celery lol.

Okay lets put it this way. Think of a setting you hate. I mean imagine a story that takes place in your idea of the worse setting ever. Have the main characters be what you consider to be the worst main characters ever. Finally have the story that you consider to be the worst story ever.

You dont have to see or play it for you to know that you are going to hate it.If you like games with happy endings, like Star Wars medal ceremony happy ending and this new game comes out in which you and everyone you are supose to care about dies horrible horrible deaths. You arnt going to like the game and you wouldnt even try to play it or watch the movie.

Now to be fair I dont know anything about the first 6 FFs so I have litterally no opinion on them. However I have seen my friends play them and I happen to have watch a few reviews or trailers on the other ones. From what Ive seen (note, not played) I did not like the setting of any of the games, I did not like the art style, I did not like the combat system. Of the 3 games that I actually know their story, I did not like any of their stories.

If I like very realistic stories and everything in the game must obey modern day physics and be grounded in reality and history and Halo comes out. Im going to hate Halo because its a SciFi. I dont have to play the game if Ive seen someone play through 50% of the game (because I happened to be in the same room) and someone else has explained the entire story too me to know if Im going to hate it or now [I love SciFI and love Halo, thats just an example]

I do not actually think that if the game has the FF title it WILL be bad. I just meant that currently of all the FFs that I know of (mins the first 6 which I know nothing about) I personally think they look like bad games and I personally do not understand why a person would like those games.

Sorry for the long post but i hate it when people make a deal that I say I dont like something even though I havnt played it or seen it. I have a friend who does that all the time with me and it drives me insane, especially when he does convince me to do whatever it is, I discover I actually hate it way more than I thought I would (Scott Pilgrim is the most recent example)

That is true, but the reason why I added that clause was out of fairness.
And I don't like FF either. I never played them, but there's something...off about the style. Its too...elaborate? Ridiculous? Gaudy? I dunno, one of those.
Oh, and gunblades are fething absurd.
Then again, I don't like JRPGs in general. And yes, I have played JRPGs before, so I didn't break my own rule

And I for one like depressing or bitter sweet endings.
Nothing annoys me more than happily-ever-after.
One of the reasons why I hated Legend, actually (A movie, not a game).

Space Marine.

Hated that game. Overrated, overpriced, and it offers sub-par entertainment. Let me itemise what's wrong with it:
-shallow story. As far as i can tell, it's a chapter from DoW2 done in third person, but instead of red, you are blue.
-maximum effort was placed in satisfying glamour and appeal to people familiar with the universe. Relic crammed as much crap into it without any thought to unique content or mechanics
-worthless multiplayer system. Dedicated servers are where games are at their best, this peer to peer crap is junk.
-the game wasn't ever finished. If you have to release two patches within one year, that add more content (like more game modes, more maps and soem fixes... especially more game modes and more maps), I consider that the game wasn't finished. Especially given how it offered a shabby 8v8 or ffa game. Don't even get me started about the environments, because only one of them is any good.
-even with all it's glory, the game offers nothing to distinguish it from anything else I've played. What's really encouraging me to play this game? Absolutely nothing.
-the customiser is some shiny bling in an otherwise pointless and non-exciting game

What I expected to see:
-orcs as a playable race for multiplayer.
- I hoped to see a system by which you could build clans and teams, creating rosters where waaghs, warbands and chapters pitted themselves against eachother.
-bigger games. This is the 41st millenium. At the very least, give us the chaos of that universe, not just it's half-assed shadow. I would have loved to see 3 or even 4-way games between clans beating it out.
-wider hierarchy of classes, or a wider range of unlocks. It'd be nice to have access to psykers. It could work the same way as the plasma gun, but instead of overheating and having to wait for it to cool, you lose health or violently detonate into a seething mass of tentacles.
-speaking of overheating weapons, let's see some plasma guns explode
-actually different weapons. What's the point of having chaos vs loyalists if the only difference is the skinning? I'd like to actually see some tangible differences that imbalance the two forces.
-doctrinal options. They sort of exist, but they're really only perks. It'd be nice to have seen legitimate doctrinal options that give extra in one place, but at the cost somewhere else. For instance, mark of nurgle. Can't run, but you are tougher and take more killing. Even with the current system, Relic could have added this, as say, if 90% of you has been replaced by bionics, the loyalist version of same would be "blessing of the machine".

The story was no more shallow than your average game. Although its story twist was given away by trailers, and wasn't that original, at least the interaction between the marines was more about finding a balance between playing by the rules and using one's initiative, rather than purely the latter like most vapid shooter games.
poda_t wrote:-maximum effort was placed in satisfying glamour and appeal to people familiar with the universe. Relic crammed as much crap into it without any thought to unique content or mechanics
I'm unsure s to what you are complaining about here. That they stuck too much to the lore or something?

By that definition, the fps/3ps genre in general hasn't really innovated itself in decades. This statement could be applied to everything from CoD, to MoH, to Battlefield, to Halo, to Gears, to Dead Space, to mass effect or... well... anything in the two genres.

FPS games haven't innovated since quake and wolfenstein! Rabble robble rubble!
