Hi I'm Sean

I've been looking at the warhammer 40k and like what i see, though it does seem expensive but here's the problem.

I don't know what army to start with.

I have seen a few warhammer ads on Kijiji also and curious if their good or a rip off value.

please I'm so confused here.

hey there Sean. Dont worry, everyone was a newbie at some point Glad you like Warhammer 40K

What you want to do and how much you choose to spend really is entirely up to you. Have a look at the Games Workshop website to see all the variety they do. There's many armies to choose from and so many warriors and vehicles and god knows what to see.
If you find that price is a problem, there are alternatives out there and online stores that offer discounts on Warhammer 40K brands etc.

Hope this helps in anyway

So i could just buy say... one basic squad of Pathfinders or Boyzs ? and play...i don't need a base point of army points of 500 or more...?

All you need is a HQ unit and two troop units. The point level you are playing at is up to you and your playing partner.

So now how to decide on an army?

I think the best way to pick an army is to choose the models that you really like the look of. I know that a lot of players pick their armies based on how competitive they are, but I prefer to go based on the models, because I end having to paint whatever I pick, and if I don't like the models, there's no point in getting into that army.

Welcome to Dakka, Seandy.
Don't be so concerned about the cost.
Any hobby can get pricey.
Just choose an army that seems like it would be fun for you, and find a fun group of friends to game with.
As Mohoc suggested, just begin with an HQ and 2 troops.
Gradually building up from there is part of the fun.

The thing is they all sorta look awesome to me, but then i'm the table top gamer who plays with a cork board and thumbtacks as my minis for most games

(expect Imperial guards for some reason looking at US Marines is dull to me) ((I love their tanks though they look awesome)

I know i'm not helping much... ha...

Have you taken a look at Dark Vengeance? It would give you the core of two armies, the rule book, templates etc. to get you started at the fraction of the cost of buying all of those for just one army.

Assault on black reach looks kinda more diverse

I also like to confirm an army "i want to play, paint and read about most" before i buy something.

Well Someone offering me one (From Black reach) war boss and 20 Boyzs for $40 i might just take that and start with that i'm going to ask him how much it would cost to add a Truk to that army.

is that good?

It is a decent deal, but you will still need a 6th Edition rule book. Do you like the Orks?

On another note, are you planning on playing at home, in a club or at a store?

At home, or once a month at a store when college allows me time with (hopefully) 2 part time jobs.

The nearest games workshop is one city over from me, about 1-2 hour by bus, about 20-30 minute drive.

If you like converting and making up your own models then Chaos would be a good choice...really no limit to what kind of models you could make yourself...and by that I mean taking 40k bits and putting them all together in a random sort of way lol

if you're not too concerned about that...then it might be a bit cliche...but Space Marines are always a good starting army..Eldar and Dark Eldar are kind of iffy for beginning players...especially Dark Eldar..but in the end it's all about what you enjoy!

Why is Eldar iffy for noobs? may i ask?

They are a very difficult army to learn. A lot of their abilities play off each other and if you don't know what you are doing you will be spending a lot of money on things you don't need, be frustrated and confused. They make a great second army though if you ever get to that point.

Mohoc just about summed it up...Dark Eldar are very fragile, fast and have very few units that can soak up any damage...if you make some mistakes it's very easy to get punished in the game

with Eldar they're psychic intensive..not necessarily of course but the farseer and his warlocks I believe personally are better than an autarch and the vehicles have all sorts of different rules...not impossible to get into and succeed but some knowledge helps.

I've never played Orks myself but I think they could be a decent beginners army if you didn't want to go power armour

Welcome to Dakka! As was said before, we were all noobs once. If you know anybody that plays 40K, or if there is a gaming store close, I would talk to them. Your choice of army really depends on how you want to play the game and how much you like the hobby part of the game (modelling, painting, etc). If you're in it for fluff and to tell a story and you don't want to play competitively, then I would just go to GW's site and see what you like. Be aware that armies like Orks and Guard use a much higher model count and, therefore, will require more time for building and painting If you are more of a competitive person and you think at some point you will be playing tournaments, then I would dig through the forums and you can get an idea of what is competitive currently, or look into the rumored release schedule as, generally (not always), newer codices are better. For beginners, I will say that, not only Eldar and Dark Eldar, but Daemons of Chaos also have a steep learning curve - they have a LOT of special rules, starting with how they come onto the battlefield that can really take a long time to get used to.

Well the only gamestore near me that sells warhammer figures noone in the store knows anything about them.. since the store is primary focused on Magic the gathering and comic books.
The Eldar ideas look kinda cool, the Orks are funny and the Space marines are bad ass..

Knowing me i probably more likely go.

Some kind of Space marine based army
Orks
Eldar

These armies seem to have richer history or at least a laugh to play. i could see me yelling in the game "For the Emperor" or "I'm the biggest Nob there is" In DND i always enjoyed playing good over evil anyways. (I know nonone of these army are good or evil just different forms of corruption. )

If i played the bug i be tempted to (Don't hurt me)

Be just tempted to yell "Zerg Rush" ((i played starcraft when i was young before i knew about warhammer sorry :p))

If you like the history and background and such, visit www.lexicanum.com for a look. It's kinda a wiki for all things warhammer. It can be kinda daunting but it'll tell you everything.

As for starting up, I'd honestly recommend the dark vengeance box (can sometimes get it a little cheaper online somewhere). The miniatures are amazing, you'll get the rules, dice templates, etc, you can have a few practice games by yourself. See what side you like the best (Chaos) and ebay off the other side just to offset the initial cost a bit. Then take the bus to GW, get a couple of little games with the staff members, they'll fill you in on some of the finer bits of the rules/hobby. And that's it.. you're off.

Good luck

If they are all the Black Reach models, you should either be getting the entire set for that price, or be getting those boyz and the warboss for around $25.
Check ebay, you can pick up the AoBR orks for around $40-45, and that will include deffkoptas and nobz as well.
