Hi folks,
Small bit of background first.
Been out of action for a good 14 years, but a recent clear out of a loft unearthed an old 2nd Edition Ultramarine army and with it reignited some long forgotten enthusiasm (Helped along by reading old codicies and that Codex Imperialis book from the 2nd Ed box). My initial plan was to strip some of the old mini's and start painting again. Simply for the odd relaxed rainy evening when there's no football on the box or anything. I don't have that much spare time these days, so I only planned on picking up the odd interesting looking model or squad or whatever and casually, slowly paint it up over a few weeks or even months. However, such as is often the way with these things I'd imagine, I've been totally swept up and I aim to start gaming again.
So, after some deliberation and soul searching, I've decided to started a Blood Angels successor chapter army, Angels Amaranthine. My brief explanation of the background can be found here; http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/481889.page . I'd love your opinions on it.
And, this is my humble Painting and Modelling blog. And this is the first model;
A couple of points on my colour scheme choices;
1. First and worst reason, I thought that black armour would be easier and faster than red armour. Pretty much a black basecoat, then a zenithal blast of grey, then a wash and quick highlight. I am a slow painter. I also have very little spare time in which to paint. So, because I'm keen to start playing again, I'm trying to find a balance between speed and standard.
2. I also liked the black scheme because it would differentiate the army from Blood Angels. I though about doing Angels Vermillion or Angels Encarmine but I thought everyone would just see them as Blood Angels anyway because the schemes are all so similar.
3. I wanted them pretty dark. There's gonna be a bit of Chaos kit bashing going on here. Mostly inspired by this guy http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/431491.page
4. I know they might look a bit close to my Death Company should I ever add a squad. But I don't mind that, I prefer uniformity, and it should still be reasonable easy to tell them apart.
Speaking of uniformity, this is my librarian. Actually, it's just a test model (hence the sloppy first attempts at weathering and battle damage). But i'll probably stick with the black for my actual librarians, just don't think the blue will suit the theme. Might paint the helm white or something to help them stand out. As I say, its just a test model and probably a stand in for some early practice games while I try learn the rules (by the way, sooo much has changed since 2nd ed.)
This was my first attempt at zenithal highlighting with my cheap airbrush
And how he is now
And these are the first three assault marines for my new army
Next job is to finish the rest of the squad, finish the sanguinary priest (which is my first attempt at white and who I think is looking pretty good, should've made the whole army white) and to tackle the Landspeeder.
Anyways, I hope you've read this far and I thank you if you have. This blog will probably be updated slowly, as I say, I am not fast and I have little time. But I will post everything I do.
Please leave your comment, critisisms and tips (including photography tips, I'll try improve my pictures). Please don't be kind. Any and all comments are more than appreciated. I value any feedback and it would be nice to know if anyone is watching. I may need some encouragement further down the line.
Thanks again
Alan

Thanks, yeh, the white's airbrushed. I spray undercoated it with a pale grey by Humbrol (I forget the exact name of it), then airbrushed the white from the top leaving a bit of the grey visible from right underneath.
Automatically Appended Next Post: probably didn't need the airbrush. A spray of white from a can from above would've done fine too I think.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Finished Assault Squad and Finished Landspeeder.
And the Landspeeder...
Thanks for looking. Again, comments and critisisms most welcome.

Alan your posts couldnt have come at a better time really, as i can use these to bounce ideas of my own in my coming marine chapter, it too will be based apon the blood angels codex.
I've only started to scratch the surface of what i want aside from my army list, that's all done and worked out
So anywho, thank you and just to add, nice painting.

Thank you very much. It's quite a daunting prospect, ruining a decent paint job. But I am pretty happy with how it turned out. It's something I'll keep trying to improve.

Thanks Cocker.
Not been able to do too much recently. Been super busy at work. Have managed to take a better photo of the Sanguinary Priest. And I've managed to build my second assault squad. Hopefully I'll get some painting done soon.
Let me know what you think folks. Anything I should change?
Thanks again for looking guys.

I used khorne bits on my DC too (especially the bare heads), just to add as a contrast to how angelic the current BA linup looks. Shows that yes they on their way to becomming vampyric savages.

Steal away Jim. And, yeh, totally agree about the current blonde Blood Angels. I wanted my army to look a bit darker than the standard BA's, I think the Chaosy bits are working quite well. There's so many cool bits I can't use though just because they're too obviously chaos.
Tappers wrote:Usually when someone gets back into the hobby, their painting is fairly decent. Yours, however, is pro level.
Thanks Tappers, you're very kind but I am no pro. Thanks for the compliment though, it means a lot. I have been pretty happy with my standard since I started again. I was never a very good painter in my youth, I didn't really have the patience. Since starting again, I've found that I have loads. When I was getting back to the hobby I thought that I would just be painting the odd model or squad and that I could take my time with them. I painted a small squad of Ultramarines that I was really happy with. They took ages, but that was ok.
Now that I've been sucked into the gaming side again and I'm now painting an army, I'm trying hard maintain a decent standard while being eager to start playing again.
So thanks again for the kind comments, they really help me to keep going. And I'll keep trying to improve and hopefully continue the regular posts. It's difficult to find the time these days but I'll do my best. Taking the second assault squad to my mothers tomorrow for undercoating and base/zenithal coats (she has a good attic for spraying and airbrushing, I definitely don't). So hopefully I'll manage to get a few of the marines finished in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks for reading,
Alan

Hi guys, anyone who has subbed. I was wondering if it wouldn't be too rude to ask you to have a quick look at this thread? http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/495305.page#5088081 It's a wip image of the Librarian I'm building to lead my army, and I'm looking for a little input. Thanks very much. In the meantime, I haven't done much painting. Did build this landspeeder though. I filed off the aquila from the front, not sure what to replace it with and it still needs some LGS touching up. I also managed to get another cheap lanspeeder from ebay. It sadly needs stripped of it's current decent paintjob and repainted. I actually have a ravenwing landspeeder from my own old stuff ready to be rebuilt and painted, but I think I wanted more meltas in the army rather than the ravenwing assault cannon. It'll get done eventually. Thanks again Alan

Ok folks. If anyone is still subscribed I apologise for a veeeeeeery long period of absence. I had a very unproductive festive period followed by a January and February where I have found myself becoming rather distracted by Infinity. So I apologise and I hope to regain some enthusiasm for this army. I've got close to 3000pts bought I think, it just seems all a bit intimidating to paint and I had become a little disheartened. But the last couple of weeks I've got keen again and managed to get a little bit done. With a bit of luck I'll be able to keep it up. Anyways.....
6 more assault marines painted. Hopefully get the other 4 done soon
The sergeant with my first attempt at an airbrushed power weapon
The forgeworld apothecary pack. Great sculpts. One is gonna be another Jump Pack Priest. The other is just gonna be a standard footslogging priest, maybe a "counts as " Corbulo sometimes also.
And these are some of the Infinity models which have been keeping me from my Space Marines.
Anyway, hope some of you are still watching. Let me know what you think. You need to help motivate me.
Cheers
Alan

Thanks, got my second landspeeder done and made my first, rather ropey, attempt at osl. Also made a decent start on my librarian. I'll try get pics up this week. Automatically Appended Next Post: Here are some pics. Hastily taken and typically not very good. I will make more effort when I've time. Anyways;
Librarian. Half done and missing his jump pack. Face needs a bit of work as well.
Landspeeder. This was done pretty quickly. Missed out quite a bit of the interior detail and things.
Osl looks not too bad from a suitable, out of focus, distance.

3rd landspeeder gets its basecoat. And I'm hoping that 2 multi meltas are better than one. Love multi meltas on landspeeders, but that's a throw back to 2nd edition. Dunno how they do these days. Still, out of respect, they're here.

And another quick picture of some shoulder pads. Just because I uploaded it for another thread, thought I may as well stick it in here.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, recently i done this;
This is my old 2nd edition whirlwind which I stripped, somewhat restored, turned into a razorback and repainted. I done it for my ultramarine kill team but painted it black as practice for any larger vehicles I may include for this army. So, that's why it's posted here. It's just a practice, so imagine those doors red instead of blue and I think it looks pretty decent.

Hi guys,
It's been a couple of months since my last update. A few things have happened.
- I've finished my 3rd Assault Squad.
- I've finished my 3rd Landspeeder.
- Finished my 2nd Sanguinary Priest.
- Played my first game since around '97. 1500pt bimble with two fully painted armies against a guy who was in a freakily similar position to myself.
- My camera broke.
If you've been following this thread you'll know (and be able to see for yourself) that I feel that my photography really isn't up to much. So, I've decided not to post any pics of finished models until I replace my broken camera, buy a little tripod for it, and learn how to take decent photos finally. Unfortunately, this means that there'll be nothing but dodgy ipad wip photos for a while. But, on the other hand, at some point in the future there should hopefully be a huge, quality photo-filled, superpost.
In the meantime, have some of those dodgy ipad wips. Having finished 3 assault squads, 3 landspeeders and 3 jump pack characters, I'm switching to the tactical side of my army. Here follow wips of my first tactical squad and my first furioso dreadnought. Still a little bit of cleaning up and lgs filling to do, but you get the idea.
Hope you like them, but let me know what you think either way.
Cheers,
Alan

Thanks guys.
Just a quick one today. Still waiting on a new camera, fingers crossed for Christmas.
But here's a quick iPad pic of the reinforcements. Undercoated, quick airbrush blast and ready to paint.
Also, in a gaming update, played my 3rd 1250pt game the other day and won against a very handy tau player (who, admittedly, is also my teacher and was taking it easy on me, but still).
These two drop pod dreads (plus a little shuffling/trimming elsewhere) will bring me to 1500pts, and are to help my assault marines get across the table. They usually need it.
Anyway, thanks again for reading,
Alan
