I understand how Orks would be a laugh. I like them in Warhammer Fantasy but I just don't like them in 40k. They just seem too.... stupid. I've never really understood how they've ever been a serious threat to the Imperium, How they can fly giant space cruisers and invade planets. Why they don't just get annihilated at every turn by high tec and well organised Space Marines, despite the numbers advantage. I just never thought they were that credible in the 40k universe. I realise that might anger a few of the bigh Meganobz on here, it's just my humble opinion.

I remember when the Gorkamorka game came out. That really suited them. That was a really fun game.

If you're worried about getting bored of one army, again, starting a Chaos Space Marine army gives you the option of branching into a daemon army as well and working between the two depending on which you prefer or just how you feel on any given day.

Nah, thats probably pretty much it. You can read the history about how some of the old Space Marine Legions were corrupted by the Chaos gods and turned from good to bad. It's some pretty good sci-fi/fantasy fluff. But, yeh, you've got the general point.

It's just that they're almost certainly the most varied of the armies. You know, you can go really shooty, or all close combat, daemons, or marines, tanks, monsters, lots of powerful psykers. Really varied.

Just characters or troops with psychic abilities. All races have psykers of some sort. They're useful because they can cast offensive spells to attack the enemy or defensive spells to protect or enhance you're own troops.

Wonder if there's an easy way to determine this... ack

Probably not. But dont rush into any decision. Just take your time and read everything you can find. Also, like someone I think said earlier, how cool you think the models look is a big part of it. You could go to your nearest shop, explain your situation and they'd probably give you a couple of demo games with a few races.

alanmckenzie has been offering up a bunch of good tips. He kinda stole everything I was going to say

Definitely play around and see what you like. I was originally going to play Imperial Guard, and then Chaos Space Marines, and then Vanilla Space Marines before deciding on the Blood Angels. It's definitely a hard choice, but if you've done your research on the armies, your much farther than me then when I started playing

Another way of picking an army is to maybe read a book or two on the armies you're really interested in...the Horus Heresy books give you some insight into the universe and are really good reads and they have fluff or "background" on varied armies...

There's the Ciaphas Cain series and the Gaunt series for some good Guard stuff...even though you said you weren't interested in guard and there are plenty of Marine books as well...also if you can look through the codexes at the local store and see if anything in there sparks your interest...and look up on wiki's as well! Go west young man!

Looking forward to the opening of 40k: The Musical

wo wo wo man... How could you say that? You broke my heart!
Seriously, I have 3k points and they're still my favourite army.
And as for all those people saying 'Kass Spess Mihreens is da mast diverse,' They are decieved by their false gods. In real fact, orks are the most diverse by far, you can make their tanks out of STICKS and SPRUE for goodness sake!
So yeah, go Orks! If you want an idea of the diversity, check out my warboss...

Seriously man, he has a MO-ORK. (geddit)
But yeah, go orks. They also have one of the coolest backstories as to reproduction, origins, famous warlords, and many other things.
Hopes this helps to clear up things. (Starts pounding fist against opposite hand)

Also, that deal sounds pretty good... old deffdreads are still good, but do something with the trukks, or else they'll hurt peoples eyes.
