I for one am kinda disappointed. This thing just looks like a blend between the Avenger and the Thunderbolt.

So thinking this, I checked FW's site, to see if I could buy a lightning before they are replaced.

They're gone. The cool, sci-fi lightnings are gone.

That's a shame, that the old design is scrapped, but I guess that was coming for some time now, the original Lightning was one of their older designs, dating back to when they still had those horrible all-resin Baneblades.

The old lightning was one of my favourite FW models. I can't really judge this one based just on that one pic, but I am leaning towards the "not as good as the old one" camp.

The Aquila becoming plastic might not be as doubtful as you think, there was some talk about it awhile back from FW.

Obviously there weren't enough people who liked the Lightning or Lander to keep up production. I sorta like this new plane although it does look a little too "modern" compared to other IG/Navy aircraft like the Thunderbolt or the Marauder.

The Lightning was likely dropped because of the fact that it was such an old model, and they might have wanted to add a "new" pattern that has a pedigree allowing for it to have been produced during the Horus Heresy.

The Aquila Lander was old and there was a bit of a mention from FW of it becoming the Sororitas "version" of the Valkyrie.

One thing I notice is the recommended price is significantly higher than the old Lightning, like nearly 2x.

And I liked the old lightning, I was actually considering getting one in the new year; price that wouldn't break the bank, it looked good and had a decent statline, not too powerful, nor too weak for its price point.

So it's the one we have seen from UK gamesday, right?

No dates as to when it might become available to order?

I like it. It fits in with the rest nicely.

Good to see that I'm not alone in liking it. I liked the old Lightning too though, I'd say they're about equal, with slight preference to this one.

As of 2011, the Lightning Fighter was 72 GBP.

I did not have a 2012 catalog for FW, but the price was not that big of a raise no matter how you spin it.

Maybe the reason for changing the aesthetic was to differentiate them from the new DA flyer.

Nah, it's now more in line with the Thunderbolt and Valkyrie variants.

Not shocked because it's not true. I just checked my orders and the old Lightning was £72, and the new one is an unbelievable £75.


As for the model, it's not bad, but I really wish they'd kept the old one around as well and just given us two different options to pick from. Though IIRC when it was first previewed at GD UK they said that it was one of the oldest models and they weren't really happy with it, so the sculptor decided to re-design it.

The lander was a beautiful kit, but hardly ever worth it's use, except as a a scenario point or piece of scenery. Its wings were recycled for the new DA flyer, so it's not a complete loss.

I was going to say that if Kan played WFB, he'd definitely play Bretonnians, but now, with Dark Angels getting Knights too.... I don't know!

Of course, I don't picture Kan as a Black Knight...

I remember reading that the Avenger came about sort of by accident when FW was trying to redesign the Lightning (iirc, the prototype they had was too big and became the Avenger), so no wonder this would make its way out sooner or later
