There is a thread going on in the backgrounds section about the leman Russ, which I more or less hate..ok I hate it. IG tanks are often replaced with other models, I myself and working on one but it is a long way off. Anyhow I thought I would start this threafor folks to share what they have used to replaced IG tanks, walkers or what ever has a power plant. So what have you used?

I am gonna add a few of my own. It is not finished as it needs treads and painting at lest.

This is a Panzer II 1/48th scale.

1: Unpainted for scale with mini's

2: Headless mini and Tank

3: Primed tank with Skirt

Looks pretty good. Bit of constructive criticism, the barrel for fuel looks way too big for that model. It looks to be a huge target and makes it look too long.

Heh its smaller then those on the Hellhounds really. Not much mind you but it is smaller. This was my first try however, I would do a few things diffident on any more I build.

Well to me do not try to find one to scale , the Russ scale is awful, its simply tiny. I am thinking of a M-41 walker bulldog as I picked it up cheap. I have seen the idea's of Tigers and such thrown around for replacements as well. The real issue is you need to eyeball the scale, often times 1/48 is to small , while many more modern 1/35th scale are simply to large.

The walker I have is a bit over 6 inches long. This is not my image but shows the scale. Thats is a 1/35th walker Bulldog and aRuss

I have contemplated using a Wirbelwind as a Hydra. But I haven't been able to do it. I also thought about using the Dust Tactics heavy walker with AA guns.

Not sure about the Dust Tactics AA's, but that might make a nice Hydra. You might be able to use that body and the hydra turrets, which are not all that bad.

Now what I do plan to do myself is use the Dust light panzer walkers in place of sentinel They will need a few things added here and there but they are about the same size and way better looking.

Well I am going to use those walkers, how does the rest of Dust stack up against 40k? I may be replacing everything.

heres a few in 1/48th scale that would work with a bit of conversions to weapons and such.

KV-1 captured
18.39 usd from one source, and would be a good match in size.

M26 pershing
23.86 usd would make a nice vanquisher basis

KV-2 heavy tank
24.99 usd a nice demolisher conversion basis.

Stug III early
24.99 usd could be used for a laser destroyer or any other turretless design.

and a few 1/35th kits that would be useful.

M3 lee
31.66 usd kinda a big hull but alot of conversion posibilites.

PZ III ausf. L
30.99 usd I have built a few of these as LRMBT standins with substantial conversions of course , worked nicely.

Thats just a few , there are many many more , the website I got these prices from is. http://www.scalehobbyist.com/

Yeah that is a good site. I used the Tamiya 1/35 Panzer 2 for the hellhounds in the OP. They are 10.29 USD on that site. Panzer 3's are larger and might do a good stand in.

The Tamiya Lee Grant kit in 1/35 scale tends to be much cheaper - you might also look at the Squadron site

I saw DT have new models coming out. One is a walker like the German half track and they have a jet as well. Would be nice to only pay $30 for a flyer.

I just build my tanks out of modified Chimera's with a Russ turret on top. They are a bit shorter but at the same time lower and wider so the scale thing looks less obvious.

My Russ chassis have been turned into Thunderers and Destroyers.

uhm, i havent actually taken any yet - will take some and post them up tonight.

This gives you a rough idea though - its basically the same as the Command Carrier but mounting a Russ Turret.

Niad isnt painted up yet though so it looks a bit sorry for itself. And sorry but I refuse to say its named after a Primarch when 90% of the rest of the Guard's tanks are named after Greek Mythology!

I simply like seeing what folks replace them with. I myself do not care if its painted or not

I am thinking of doing a conversion on the panzer with a chimera as well. The rear hull is easy enough to find and I did a mock up with a printed hull to see how it would look. The Tamiya Panzer II are cheap so I am not all that worried about messing up a hull I paid 10 bucks for. It however will be longer then the GW model. That is for sure 3rd on my list to try.

I have yet to buy one myself as those Images are not mine. They seem to com per assembled so I am unsure how hard they are to take apart. I do plan to find out at some point, but that may and most likely is months away.

You can pick up the basic Chimera chassis for about £10 on most bits sites.

My tank ended up costing me about £20, more if i include the cost of the FW turret but that was brought when I was building my Russes as Russes!

I do not like the base chassis for the Chimera, like most IG ground craft. I just hate the high side WW I style tracks/Hulls. I do however want the back half of the hull , the crew/loading area.

Also a thread on here about the walkers seems to say they are easy enough to get apart.

All of the Dust stuff (including the troopers) is true 1/48 scale. You could swap out all of the IG tanks and walkers for Dust and other 1/48 scale models very easily. The only drawback to using other 1/48 scale models is that those tend to be intended for display, not used as wargaming pieces so they are not designed for the amount of handling they will get during a game. My rule when working with 1/48th scale is that if a part is too small and fiddly and can't really be seen, then leave it off. You can also reinforce the substructure a bit to account for the additional handling the models will get. I would swap out as many of the weapons for the 40K equivalents as well, as the 1/48 stuff will look...weedy...compared to the heroic scale weapons in 40k.

I was thinking about doing something with a Landraider and a Baneblade turret.

I havaen't bought the kits yet, but I fiddled around with the idea.
Imagine a Landraider, turn it around and it looks like a Leman Russ.
Then I would have to take the engines out and put it where the front hatches are, make something where the engies used to be.
Then I would simply try to make something for the turret to sit on, and the baneblade turret and voila.

A large Leman Russ.
It's just an idea, I would love to make one, but it's kinda expensive!

Humm try ebay man. You can often find things like the Russ or landraiders that have been badly painted or unfinished cheaply.

I'm interested in the merits of using that KV-1 as a Leman Russ. The thing is, I want to use one of the forgeworld turrets with it. Does anyone know whether that would be compatible or not?

EDIT: I went ahead and ordered one (after all, they're cheap). This first one shall serve as my guinea-tank. Bwuahahahahaha!

Already been done (well a similar thing has) - its called a Rogal Dorn Battletank . See here - http://www.angelfire.com/ultra/world_of_warhammer/rogaldorn.html. Bascially its ridiculously huge thing thats more suited to being a SuperHeavy.

And you mean something like this to replace a Russ - looks like its made from a M3 Lee

I was considering using the Churchill as a replacement Russ but it works out nearly as expensive to use the 1:35 kit as to buy a GW Russ and thats before you modify it!

Yeah, kinda something like that. Although I thought the Baneblade turret would be smaller, and I would turn the whole gak around.

The tank pictured is a M3 Stuart Tank with obvious 40k modifications.

Anyways.
After seeing the 4th "Imperial Tank designs R bad" thread i've decided to make my own Leman Russ with a more realistic-ish design

Named the "Vangaurd" (throwing off the spehess puppies primarch name) it drops almost everything that is comical about the Leman Russ Design.
The Tracks are not WW1 "all around" style of the Russ, instead they are a cross between a triangular bulldozer suspension and a proper tank with (imagined) torsion bar suspension, centrally mounted engine (it would rough be between the turret ring and behind the Driver and Lascannon controls, with fuel on either side of it).

the hull is not uniform flat glasis only due to the forced inclusion of the Lascannon. but personally im pleased with it.

the Turret would be rear mounted like the FV215b or the Vk4502b (real tank designs, they are British and German respectivly.)

http://imageshack.us/a/img577/958/94590930.jpg

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/365/5/c/vk4502_ausf_b_by_jdh92296-d4ktd9l.jpg

http://www.wot-italia.it/wot_italia/images/schede/VK4502B.gif

with ammo underneath the turret ring and a larger turret bolted to the top.

The Turret and cannon are both utter opposites of the Leman Russ design. The turret will not be a tiny little box bolted to the rear end of a cannon who's bore is something like 300mm and couldn't contain a crew no less the breach of the oversized boom gun.
The turret won't be absurdly large but big enough to make sense. The Cannon is currently between a 120mm Challenger 2 gun (its extreamly long but ill cut it down), and a 88mm Tiger gun. Ill build the turret soon so I can put the turret ring on the hull.

Its still a WIP.

Edit: found a T-34/85 turret that seems to fit the hull. now trying to decide between an angular scratch built one and the more rounded Soviet Turret, currently leaning towards the angular turret due to the already angular hull and that a smooth, rounded turret would look awkward on sucha hull.
