I only know GF9 for mini wargame supplies. Do they have any sort of history with boardgames?

This could be good but I've played some pretty excruciatingly bad board games, so I'm a bit reserved...

But let's be realistic. I'll buy it just to support the IP.

So GF9 did Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery. Anyone have any brief impressions of it? Was it good, bad, indifferent?

Would you buy this Firefly game by GF9, based on Spartacus gameplay?

Would you have any hesitation buying the Firefly game based on experiences with Spartacus?

On BoardGameGeek, the game has 7.85/10 stars. I guess that sounds promising!

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/128671/spartacus-a-game-of-blood-treachery

Now I'm pretty excited to see what they do with the Firefly game!

I'm thinking a Jayne like captain character would be fantastic, but I'm probably more Simon-like.

Edits- make it more clear what I'm referring to...

I don't own it but when I played spartacus it worked far better than I expected (well I expected junk, but even so it was pretty good)

I've not played enough to have a feel for repay value though

From what I've heard from the local board game meetup and the Geek, Spartacus is supposed to be amazing. Which is somewhat surprising, as movie and TV tie-ins not by Fantasy Flight (because BSG) tend to be somewhat uninspiring.

on a purely selfish level I hope the firefly ships are decent

(GF9 are clearly able to do decent stuff, but the temptation to do simple, boardgame plastic ships will be strong)

If you're expecting anything but Firefly shaped lumps of plastic the size of a quarter, prepare to be disappointed.

Weird: GF9, specialist for tabletop games, makes a Firefly boardgame and Toy Vault, specialist for plushies, makes a Firefly tabletop:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/502405.page

BTW, here the full text of the official announcement:
GALE FORCE NINE, A BATTLEFRONT GROUP COMPANY, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX CONSUMER PRODUCTS ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF FIREFLY: THE GAME AT NEW YORK TOY FAIR 3013.

“After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terra formed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.” – Shepherd Derrial Book

Earlysville, VA (February 11, 2013) - Firefly, the popular television series created by Joss Whedon, comes to life in a new boardgame from Gale Force Nine and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. Compelling characters, great storytelling and an evocative universe has made Firefly a fan-favorite for the past ten years. Now fans of the television show and board games can chart their own course with Firefly: The Game, arriving on store shelves Fall 2013.

In Firefly: The Game, players captain their own Firefly-class transport ship, traveling the ‘Verse with a handpicked crew of fighters, mechanics and other travelers. As a captain desperate for work, players are compelled to take on any job -- so long as it pays. Double-dealing employers, heavy-handed Alliance patrols and marauding Reavers are all in a day’s work for a ship’s captain at the edge of the ‘Verse. Firefly: The Game is a high-end thematic tabletop boardgame from Gale Force Nine (GF9). It will be the first in a series of tabletop hobby boardgames and miniatures games from GF9 set in the Firefly Universe.

“Building on the success of Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery, we're thrilled to be making a game that evokes the heart and themes of Firefly - the best ‘gorram’ show in the 'Verse.” said John Kovaleski, CEO of Gale Force Nine, “With challenging game play, fantastic production values and compelling narratives, you and your fellow captains will want to head out into the big black again and again".

“We’re pleased to be working with Gale Force Nine to bring a new board game to the devoted fans of Firefly. Firefly: The Game is innovative and remains true to the spirit of the popular series” stated Jeffrey Godsick, President of Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products.

Repeat: "It will be the first in a series of tabletop hobby boardgames and miniatures games from GF9 set in the Firefly Universe."
So who has the rights now?

The Spartacus board game is *fantastic*. The components are good quality and the game itself is the most fun i've had in a board game in a long time. It is, however, very much a competitive game. You can team up briefly but it's all 'alliance of convenience' type stuff and the knives always come out sooner or later. It's also worth noting that each turn ends with a miniatures-based tactical combat in the Arena between two gladiators. The system for that is simple but effective and works quite well.

I will be interested to see how the mechanics work for this Firefly game - do you compete for jobs against each other, is there combat, how do you win, etc. But Spartacus was of sufficient quality in every way to make GF9, surprisingly, a boardgame company to watch as far as i'm concerned.

Fox still does. There is some odd division of Serenity vs Firefly (Universal vs Fox) but Fox owns the Firefly IP. Even says so in the announcement. :-)

Also, HELL YEAH!!

I think the rights question is very complex and product-dependent, unfortunately.

So Fox'll sign off on a boardgame, but spent years doing their best to bury the show and the license?

*sigh*

Not that I want to belittle the boardgame or anything, just more a reflection of the sad fate of Firefly overall.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

There is a big difference between ignoring a license because it makes you no money and trying to bury it.

That, and it's not like the cast has been precisely jobless the entire time to come back and do more episodes even if it were financially viable. Castle is doing rather well still AFAIK, and I could swear I remember reading something about Tudyk's movie career doing fairly well.

About Gorram time Firefly got a game. Hope it lives up to its namesake by not letting its owner down.

Anyway This Brown coat is looking forward to sticking it to the Feds., making runs from the Core out to the Rim & back and hopefully keep flyin' when everyone else is on the drift.

For those who are intending to pick up this game, it is worth keeping an eye out for the most recent issue of Game Trader magazine as it comes bagged with an exclusive promo Firefly class ship "the artful dodger" card and mini. This promo allows a 5th player to join the game (and another ship options for 2-4 player games).

Good looking out, dude.

My wife ended up watching a few episodes of everyones favorite show this past weekend when they had a marathon on the Science channel. She was, of course, hooked.

Fox do seen to be going overboard on the licence at the moment with this in the first of a series of board / mini games, the new RPG (beta edition of the rules available at gencon) and the Firefly Online mobile game (coming out next year). I think j saw that someone has the licence to make a range of cuddly toys as well..
