So with Origins already past and GenCon coming up, there's more information rolling in about Star Trek: Attack Wing. Although Attack Wing is based on the FlightPath system under license from FFG, the same system that X-Wing uses, there are some interesting differences. We haven't decided whether talk about Attack Wing should go in this subforum just yet but as this will still somewhat be about X-Wing we'll discuss it here for the time being.

Based on coverage at Origins, here are some things I've noticed so far:

- there aren't as many koiogran/Immelman turns; instead ships can move directly backwards
- otherwise movement seems the same except there's also a size 6 straight movement template
- like X-Wing, lower pilot (in this case, captain) scores maneuver first and higher scores attack first
- there's the "scanning action" which allows you to remove one of the defender's dice
- focus is called targetting (not sure if true)
- target lock and evasion seem to be the same
- stress seems to work the same way
- still get a bonus defense die at range 3 and bonus attack die at range 1
- pilot/ship are the same card in X-Wing; ship and captain are different cards in Attack Wing
- generic captains are free
- some captains can be upgraded themselves (e.g., Picard)
- like in X-Wing, it looks like different weapons on the same ship use different arcs
- the Constellation-class, Miranda-class, and Galor-class (or at least some version of each) seem to have 180 degree forward arcs
- you can raise and lower your shields
- there are still regular and critical hits
- just like X-Wing, you remove regular hits before critical hits
- you can cloak but it doesn't take full effect until the next turn;
- cloaking and cloaked ships get four bonus defense dice (but can't have your shields up)
- cloaked ships can't be target locked; cloaking ships can
- a ship can't cloak to shake a target lock

Well it sounds like they're tweaking the rules in a good way... I hope they do something with the minis.

I hope Warp core breaches and coolant links are common place... With some nice run/fly for your life explosions.

As you probably know, the minis are just the clix ones -- which is why they can offer 11 ships off the bat while X-Wing still only has 8 (not including Wave 3) ... and the seeming plan with Attack Wing is to continue releasing the clix models. The Attack Wing rule book apparently mentions Borg, Species 8472, Kazon, Bajoran, Ferengi, Independents, and even Mirror Universe.

Will "Eject Red Shirts/Warp Core" be an action that can be performed?

There is definitely going to be a Red Shirts promo card. It's a Participation Prize for the October Dominion War campaign.

I'm liking what I'm seeing of Attack Wing so far, and will probably try to rebase my Trek Clix when it comes out. It's being packaged similar to X-wing, right? Not blind packs?

Right, it's not "collectible."

Was pretty sure I'd heard that, but wouldn't put it past Wizkids.

What is kind of bothering me about Attack Wing is that some things being released are exclusive to conventions and/or tournaments. I know this is common with Heroclix but for someone who wants to collect stuff and have friendly games, I really don't want to bother with tournaments or buy it for a vastly inflated price over eBay.

For example, I think that's the only way to get a Deep Space 9 miniature.

Can't say I agree Attack Wing is an "upgrade" of X-Wing or that Attack Wing has "great art." Unfortunately the review doesn't add much to what we know. Well -- I haven't scrutinized the pics yet.

- Starter Set comes with two Missions: "A New Source of Dilithum" and "The Chase" (both three-player)
- Each expansion comes with 2-3 Captains and 4-9 Upgrades
- Expansions also come with new Missions! (inlcuding "The Mutara Nebula")

I do like that, unlike X-Wing, Attack Wing contemplates games between more than three players from the start. I do worry about balance issues, however ...

Kinda disappointing that the ships are named and not generic classes.

The ships come with generic class cards as well as named versions.

Even so -- Attack Wing and X-Wing are, according to Tom Vasel, not compatible (thank goodness).

It's a pity there isn't a Jem'Hadar ship ( or the Defiant for that matter!) in Wave 1 considering the first campaign is called "Dominion War."

Well, consider that the games aren't balanced against each other at all ...

I'd echo the disappointment on the lack of "Dominion" ships. Would have loved to see some Jem Hadar ships, the defiant, and even the voyager model as that was the admirals flag ship. Lots of options for future releases but seems like atleast a single Jem ship would have been nice. Unless Wave 2 will come quick

I have a feeling waves will come faster for this than for X-wing being that the ships are already done. Probably not putting out too much at once to spread out their intake of money.

I'll likely take a good look at the ships before deciding if I want to actually buy the game. Not sure I'd actually want to play it but if the ships are nice I wouldnt mind picking up a bunch just to throw on the gaming self. Really comes down to the quality of the ships. I've never paid much attention to the clix stuff, but if the quality is more closer to what I remember hero clix being I'm not sure I'd be all that interested, but if the quality is similar to x-wing then i'd likely pick some up

It sounds like Heroclix level detail. My friend prefers Star Trek over Star Wars, and he's getting a bit worried/leery.

I dunno, that's what I was thinking until I saw the clix ships in person. They look alright. I don't think they're as nice as X-Wing, however. A lot about Attack Wing strikes me as sloppier than X-Wing.

OTOH they at least have +1 defense at range 3 and +1 attack at range 1 on their range template.

I'm very saddened by the quality of the ships :-\ they just seem to be lacking in detail... oh well..

The ships look like the old Micro Machines molds still seeign service.

Also, is it just me, or should capital ships not perform like fighters? I'm not sure the X-wing base of the game is a good idea.

I'll hold off until I see an Akira. Then I'll probably tumble all in with my fascination for that ship.

Yeah, it's no X-Wing ... just judging based on seeing the clix in person. But it's serviceable.

I suspect it won't feel that way given scale is abstracted in Attack Wing.

If you're just looking to grab some for your shelf rather than to play, go ahead and buy the Clix. It's the same exact model and paint job, but they'll be cheaper.

No Akira class yet, but considering some of the other classes they've done, I wouldn't bee surprised if it comes out eventually.

Another important for some difference is that the competitive tourney/league kits come with complete ship sculpts and variants that are not otherwise available for normal purchase.

I am stoked I am a big fan of wars but even bigger fan of trek. I was about to invest in x wing and then found out attack wing and have been selling warhammer stuff on ebay for the past 2 weeks to fund my fleets. Can't wait it is just going to pull in a whole new fan base in the fantasy flight system.

The two games are really differant in that x wing is more about dog fights where attack is more about big capital ships. There are many basic ships in attack wing that are going to start with 4-5 attack dice. I believe most x wing ships have less than that.

I had a good look at this today and have to say the quality of the ships was a complete turn off. They dont even come close to the FF X-wing ships and I didnt buy it (despite having an interest) as a result.

The attack wing ships are not bad, they are they same sculps as heroclix but the paint job is more detailed. Not as detailed as x wing but it is a fair trade. Attack wing ships are cheaper $$. They all retail from 10-14 $ a ship x wing is 12-15 for fighters and 19-39 for the bigger. So I think it works out.
