I thoroughly enjoy Planetside 2. It's a ton of fun playing as part of a full, organized platoon during alerts and stuff. I also really enjoy big tank battles, except when I get insta killed because some light assault sneaks up and c-4s me because my turret gunner was too busy lobbing grenades in the general direction of the enemy instead doing his job and looking out for light assaults who are trying to sneak up and c-4 me.

And giving NC maxes auto shotguns was a terrible idea, because yes, Vanu and TR maxes are slightly better at range, but when all of your objectives boil down to trying to hold points that are 95% of the time inside a building, giving one side extreme damage at close range is not actually balanced by giving the other sides slightly better ranged accuracy. I've lost alerts because even with a full platoon holding the single point that will win or lose the alert, you simply cannot stop an organized NC max rush.

Did SOE actually do something worth the money I sunk into it?
Does TR actually have weapons that aren't shafted for no reason? Does the Prowler not suck any more? Did ZOE get nerfed into uselessness so its on par with Lockdown and the NC MAX ability?
Its not worth it any more, its a mediocre shooter hiding behind an MMOFPS shield to explain away its problems. Balance has been horrid since Closed Beta, but back then, I had optimism, along with many others.
Just not worth it.

T2 Striker is still OP, TMG-50 is still absurdly good, T-9 Carv with Grenade Launcher is death to all enemy Maxes, and I've had massive killstreaks with Prowlers.

I think I've had more fun playing PS2 than BF3. i don't like the hackers. The friendly fire gets a bit crazy too.

Hope no-one minds me waking this thread up!

Just got this game and really getting into it - had a bit of a grounding into how the game works (kill ratio of about 1:10 but improving!), next step is to join a clan/outfit. Does anyone have any recommendation for this (guess it just involves posting on the official forum?) I have wonderful memories from the first game, and being in an 'airborne' outfit that involved regular mass-attacks from the air, so would like to do something similar in this game if possible!

Even though the game is free, I constantly find myself wondering if it's any fun and subsequently install and install once or twice every few months. My main problem with it is that to do anything really effective you have to have a large group and many of those large groups are pretty strict so I don't want to join. Without a group you generally just spawn somewhere shoot a few people and die. Rinse, repeat, get bored.

You are doing it wrong then. Planetside 2 is NOT Call of Duty or Battlefield where you can run along solo and hope to have a good time. You NEED a squad to really perform at your best. Finding a good outfit is key to having fun in PS2. I have never heard of a strict outfit, my outfit just wants members to follow squad leader commands when running an OP. If you cant follow directions and stick together then maybe PS2 isnt the game for you.

Played this quite a bit, did mostly infantry but did a lot of ESF and Tanking too. With Tanking you need a gunner (preferably on voice) to act as eyes so you know when to back out.

I think the ESF has changed significantly since I played last though.

Yeah, they just released a big change for the ESFs a patch or two ago. I play fairly often - TR on Waterson - and I like the game where it is now.

There are enough alerts - and now they started the 'mission' system there is always something going on.

But what I am really looking forward to is the new continent and continent locking. That is going to be a blast.

This makes me very sad.

So I watch Matimi0, LvlCap, Sankaku Games and Wrel on youtube.

On the EU servers it's great, in my outfit obnoxious American teenagers (and I'm sorry guys, yours are the worst ) are replaced by a guy that sound like the Meerkat from those insurance adverts, being ordered around by a German and a Dutchman who can speak perfect English except for not quite having a grasp of how to swear properly.

I play the game pretty much every day, I've sunk about 570 hours into it since December 2012.

Great game imo. I uninstalled it for a bit to play BF4 and regretted it after about two weeks.

But you're missing out on a huge part of the experience if you play solo, imo. This game is clan oriented (in-game they're called Outfits). You don't have to actually be apart of clan, but your experience will be immensely improved if you at least play with one; most outfits run open squads for you to join in-game.

Have sunk over 400 hours into the game over a couple years. Im a Vanu Sovereign player and generally I enjoy my time on the game, except when there isnt an Outfit OP going on. Not really having no purpose and just being a single man amongst a zerg of purple just doesn't feel as fun unless I run with my Outfit or stumble across a random squad to join with.
I would play more and for longer periods if I could upgrade my computer to push more than 30-45 fps and reduce my laggy connections when the battles get super heated.

Been playing since end of December 2013 (Connery, TR and sometimes NC). Around 280-ish hours later, and I still love it! Just recently Auraxium-ed with the T9-CARV-S (good all-around gun, IMO). Oh, and I love the fething CRAP out of the Chaingun. Any decent Ork would be proud.
But yeah, best way to play this is to join an outfit, especially one you personally are attracted to. I've been running with Drunk Division for a long time, and it's been a blast 95% of the time.

I've been following the Sankaku Games youtube channel for a while now, so I'm considering applying to join his outfit BRTD (Better Red Than Dead). It'll be fun to take part in an outfit that gets active Youtube coverage.

I liked it, but I felt my infantry guns where pathetic. My assault rifles etc hardly ever killed anything. But as soon as I hop onto a vehicle I kill anything I please. Kinda ruined it for me.

My friends and I would create assault teams and jetpack well behind enemy lines and be a pain, but we thats all we could do. Because our weapons where hopeless.

We tried huge air assaults with those huge carriers and mini gunships (best cinematic in a game ever) and as our craft hovered over the target zone for a few seconds we all jumped in large numbers with lasers flying everywhere and gunships dropping off the non assault guys. But still felt like as a soldier I couldnt harm the enemy much.

But I loved watching the huge battles and D-Day style assaults and so on.

Huge potential I just think the weapons need to be better or at least not take forever to upgrade.

Heh, coincidence. I recently remembered this game as well and, after downloading a few huge patches, started to play again. Nothing serious (Elite is soaking up most of my gaming time), but every 2nd or 3rd evening I hop on for an hour or so of infantry combat.

I object the notion that you absolutely need a squad to feel useful, though. Whilst running with a squad is, of course, the preferable experience, just looking where the action is and joining the push feels rewarding enough. Especially if you play a support class, like I do ("Medic here, I'll patch you up!").

Also, I noticed they changed/added a couple things!
+ camos! (mostly I'm using the default look, but on Esamir I'm donning snow camo)
+ alternative voice packs! (Station Cash well spent)
~ new continent (nice to have, I suppose, but imho visually it just doesn't compare to the existing three)
- implants (meh idea, meh execution)

Some more propaganda

I have a ton of fun playing PS2, probably the most enjoyable FPS I've played in years. I used to love Battlefield, but the direction the series has taken has soured me all but completely, and I haven't enjoyed CoD since MW1, but running around killing dudes in purple spandex and space 'MURICA! is remarkably enjoyable.

I'm only part of a tiny outfit, but once you get to know the nature of the big ones, it's easy to jump into squads and have fun. WHen playing at odd hours it can be particularly amusing, such as being one of only 4 TR on Hossin, facing off against 80 Vanu.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

I'm having a lot of fun as a Light Assault, flying up onto rooftops and using a suppressed Carbine with an Acog scope to assassinate people on aircraft launch pads etc as they're focusing on the ground. Its also easier to get back into the fight quickly.

Maybe I have too high expectations, but whenever i play with any squad, public or outfit, it just feels like large scale counter-strike. You have people with you on the base, and rarely, your squad will have a very general plan, like defend the left side, or blow up the tanks. Which more often than not, don't get accomplished. Because while your squad is with you on the base, you would almost never have them by your side when you're pinned and need suppressing fire, or a grenade around the corner, or calling out enemy positions. Very little communication. Very little motivation to have strong teamwork.

Every time I get on voice, everyone else would be talking about other stuff. And I would be the odd guy out spitting combat chatter over teamspeak, and everyone is minding their own part of the battle. How is that any different from just being part of the zerg?

I used to be a great fps player. Bit busy nowadays, extremely rusty but I've been playing computer fpses for over 10 years now, and I can still kill more than my share on planetside (and only planetside nowadays) when I'm not at my best.

I just wish once in a while, when I'm camping a crucial building or a rocky outcrop someone would give me a target, or any information, so that I can help them. Or they would respond when I ask for help. Sorry for the rant...just something thats been bugging me for a long time, especially since everyone says joining a squad is different from going rambo.

First to fight, for the right, to restore republic might, and the prowler goes rolling along

I do enjoy the explosions and massive volleys of gunfire though.

The best gameplay seems to be when two, sometimes three zergs clash in the open wilderness between bases, across open plains, rolling hills and gigantic cliffs. The most fun I've had was at the Howling Pass Checkpoint, parking my Prowler on a cliff shooting down at an NC tank column a km away , or at the Crown, shooting from a cliff bombarding the Vanu and NC fighting over it.

When the fighting moves inside the bases themselves it just descends into a boring grindest of spawn camping.

Tank-fights do go better. Add some AA to keep the bombers out of the fight and it usually turns out well.

I like to use a triple-purpose Prowler (I play TR) equipped with the HE AT rounds (the all purpose shell) and an AA Flak gun on the turret. Lets me engage both infantry and tanks, and when we're getting harassed by aircraft I switch over to the Flak gun.

I have a fully upgraded burster max - the only time the TR's lockdown ability is actually useful on one - and I love it. Does insane damage to aircraft and gets me a hell of a lot of points.
