So from here on out armies are gonna slowly die away. No more will someone collect some armies, it will now be I have Insert races/units in my army.

Makes me wonder if GW staffs selling methods have changed. When I first started and purchased my first sets from GW (regrettably) it was all about trying to sell me on an army. What do they do now I wonder?

Allies was the mid step to creating this current situation and now I wonder how far the players (especially new players over the next year) will take this. One day, just like flyers today, we may see most players with demons and anti demons, 1-20 codices and data slates. Maybe people wont look at it too much and it will just be that option some people take.

Not sure what to expect from the over all 40k gaming group, but I think we may be seeing less "themed" armies as a result of GW trying to make the game more themey.

leman russes backing up nurgle demons who are using guardians as meat shields with tau drone flyers zooming over head can exist. One day we may see the dakka gallery full of armies such as this.

Its kind of nuts really, I myself will hold true to my one army army, but in 20 years who knows what the normal lists will be like.

First time I have worried about the 40k game and its future.

Pretty scary huh? Anyone else not looking forward to this dystopian gaming future of a dystopian game?

Everything will be fine. Find a paper bag and take a couple of deep breaths.

Very little is going to change, in the long run.

I suspect it won't be a big deal in general. Personally, beyond occasionally using it for some fun combos with friends, I don't plan to use it at all. Maybe people will end up with extra-diverse collections, but that isn't a bad thing. I think it could be a benefit to the community as people aren't forced to use units they don't like, and figure out which armies they do. No more having to invest hundreds to really get the experience of an army, only to find you didn't like it and have to start with a new one.

I play Space Marines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Astra Militarum, Militarum Tempestus, Chaos Space Marines, Dark Eldar, Eldar, Orks, Adepta Sororitas, 'Nids, Necrons, Tau and Grey Knights.

I'm surprised to see such a shift in your opinion of GW Swastakowey.

Apologies if I misinterpreted any of your opinions, but I seem to recall you being quite positive of most all of GW's action just a few months ago. And that's not to say that you're wrong to change opinions if you did, I know I'm not the most positive of GW these days. Just what's more interesting is seeing possible erosion of some of the more staunch defenders' opinions.

I think that getting to see how skilled modelers put together a coherent and interesting force out of the available pieces is going to be one of the big positives of the way army construction has gone. I know that it has enabled me to really expand on some army ideas, whether it's a proper Deathwatch army, adding "elementals" to my L5R themed Eldar, or just getting to legally add a Knight to my Noise Marines.

Sure, it'll suck seeing the non-painted, min/maxed lists, but I think that this is one case where the positives will outweigh the bad.

This pretty much happens at the release of every rule set. Sure you can take everything together if you want, doesn't mean you have to or everyone suddenly will.

Haha normally id be agreeing with you all, (as you could guess by some of the comments) but I had friends who said not to worry about flyers because they wont change much, or allies because of whatever. But they are all over the place.

Now armies can be whatever. I just think it will take the same route.

I think 7th overall is better than 6th, but this one change I think will be something I find distaste with in the coming years.

So yes, as Accolade said, GW has eroded me that little bit.

Its not the unbound, but the unbound with no restrictions. Unbound within one army would be fine and id be merry. but not unbound for everything at all. That to me, is something this game did not need. GW may need it, but not the game.

So yes, maybe im over reacting, but as I said, this is the first time I have feared for the future of the game. Who knows, maybe a paper bag is all i need...

Unbound is consensual though, if they were shoving it in our faces as part of the new standard then yeah. Makes you think about 8th really...

I seriously doubt they'd make something like unbound the standard though, it'd gut the sales on more things than it would help since you can skip things from codices.

It's not that bad. It's still up to the players to decide how much fun they put into it.

Even with allies, and Inquisition being everyone's friend, my gaming group has kept to 1-2 armies per person. Not by any rule we set but just that we all would like to expand fully on 1-2 armies. Although we play the same faction most times, we play different styles to have variety. And we haven't really needed to ally for any games.

Somewhat like what you mentioned in your blog, Swastakowey. We kinda agree too.

True, true, I think the paper bag worked. I may have over reacted...

I guess ill keep an eye out for 8th edition and see what comes of it.

I was under the impression that Battle-Forged is going to be *almost* as abusable with multiple FOC and spamming of particularly effective units and allies.

Not as insane as Unbound mind you, but still kind of absurd.

No limits on detachments so its partly abusable, but not the kind of abusable thats really worth the effort id imagine.

Yeah. G'dub gets this one time pass for putting editions too close together. I won't change editions for another 4 years. Even marked that on my email calander. 40k 8th, $ on May 2018.

Help! The world is going to end!
GW is now so close to the fulfillment of their evil plan to destroy the world release of 7th edition in name of their reptillian overlords that it is impossible to stop them now!
Or we could just calm down, stop making wild predictions and have tea instead. And biscuits. Nice biscuits.
Let us first see what 7th brings and only then pass judgement.

Hmmm I feel like some people arent reading the whole thing first. Sky is falling people should read the original post. I dont think I mentioned anything like the sky is falling really. Simply worried as to how lists will be made in the future.

I fear(?) the contrary. Battle Brothers is, in my opinion, the only level of alliance worth considering. Everything else is either a risk or not worth the trouble in a time when we can take multiple FOCs or ally with our own factions. We will still see crazy combos in the Imperial side, but I think the days of the jolly multi-racial armies of 6th (Eldar/Inquisition, Taudar, Necrorks, Tau/Marines...) are counted.

And it's a good thing.

yea this was more about what comes next. 6 saw the doubling of the FoC (which was largely ignored I think) and now 7th has unbound which may or may not be popular, then what may 8th bring? A more extreme or radical change?

Who knows, hence why for the first time i fear for the future of the game. Simply because in the army restriction department, the game is going a little wild with each edition.

It's pretty much been this way since allies came out. Nothing new here. Unbound is play whatever you want. Battle forge you can play an pure army (some will) or take your detachments.

The days of amassing ungodly amounts of a single army is gone unless it's apocalypse reason or a collector...that day came 2 years ago.

8th might even be bringing in more fantasy elements or expanding on an older rule. Play this one until 8th comes out, till the. Don't worry bout 8th and you will have more fun.

I feel like it was prepared then, cemented now. Unbound is a big step forward though, as you arent limited by allies (even though when Inquisition came out you could take more) but simply by points. So I think its gonna be something new, that increases in impact as editions come and go. At this rate anyways. As many have said, I'll wait for 8th, because if its one upped for the 3rd time then I'll call it the usual trend.

While I'm sure SOME people will become creative with unbound armies, by and large I expect most people to mostly collect a single army, or maybe a combined force of two.

keep in mind that an unbound army consisting of a mix of units from differnt armies also requires the purchase of multiple codexes etc.

I get what your worried about but, I don't think we'll see too much, I mean most allied forces seen are battle brothers. and thsoe tend to be pretty limited. yes you have the Imperium, but let's face it the Imperium consists of Space Marines (in multiple flavors) IG SoBs, and a varity of special codexes.

what we'll proably see most of in terms of mixed unit forces is thus "Imperial crusade armies"

A friend purchased 3 revenant titans after he found out I got a reaver titan. There are a lot of wealthy people who play this game haha. But with pirating available and people sharing codices im sure its not a huge barrier.

Heh, I think everything will be fine for a while. This entire edition seems to have been written to tone down the most powerful armies of 6th (and the abuse of psychic powers and allies) as well as giving the weaker codices (that were probably written with 7th in mind already) a fighting chance.

That is, until the next codex comes out of the press with a new OP unit ready to be spammed like there's no tomorrow or some crazy new rule that ignores everything the BRB had set in stone

As for 8th... I really hope it's a new third. A renewal. 3rd edition removed all the dead weight inherited from Rogue Trader and made 40k as we now know it, but I feel the game is yet again becoming bloated and hard to handle. GW needs to sit down, think, and rebuild their game from the ground up.

Exactly haha, its not like flyers where awful or bad. But it just goes to show how much their rules can effect what people consider standard. Flyers where, in comparison to unbound, a small change that changed the way 40k players played forever. I dont think its unreasonable to think that unbound, over time, will do something similar over editions.

I agree, I hope I am wrong and you are right. If 8th is the overhaul then yea I was just crying falling sky. If not then I am fairly sure unbound will start going the flyers route.

I was gonna get more titans, but i cant bring myself to spend that amount of money on titans that are more of a pain than anything else. I will wait for now. Revenge will be swift and sweet.
