Ok, I am addicted to Rough Riders. My all time Favorite unit in 40k now.

Im not yet at the stage of consumption though

Last thread was very successful as I ended up with the badgers to make my first unit. I now have 10 Badger Lancers and 1 Lion Riding Leader. I thought it would be enough to quench my Cavalry needs.

I was wrong. I want more....

In 1000 points, I can fit about 70 rough riders with upgrades. Thats right, im gonna have an army of horses that run to their deaths (and hopefully kill faster than they die). In games bigger than 1K I will back it up with my Tankettes and light tanks.

The first unit is on Giant Badgers.

I want to pick dakkas brains on what the riders in the other 6 squads could ride. Please provide links to the models for your ideas!

Cheers

Spoiler:

Thats what they look like SO FAR. I got grenades, ammo, greenstuff and other bits to put on them coming.

So far we have (links will be added soon)

Unit 1 = Badgers
Unit 2 = Buffalo (maybe)
Unit 3 = Stags
Unit 4 = Terror Bird (looks like a Moa) http://www.blightwheelminiatures.com/terror-bird-cavalry
Unit 5 = Tortoises
Unit 6 = Tyranids

Alright, if anyone knows where models/toys for this can be found, please share!

Do you have a theme in mind or is it just whatever RR models can fit on?

For the British theme; Bulldogs

I absolutely love the idea behind rough riders and they are some of my favorite units conceptually.
The problem is that they are essentially really expensive guardsmen that can move 12 inches, and are only useful on their first round of combat where they only get 5 possibilities to kill anything.

No theme. Just any animals.

Thats a good idea! If anybody finds some 28mm British bull dogs let me know! (ill look now)

I completely agree. But I feel like, with some luck, I can get it to maybe work. Even if its just a gimmick I bring to shock people now and then.

My rough riders are just a single Theodore Roosevelt mini accompanied by giant cybernetic hunting hounds.

My fluff for him is that he stumbled through an alternate reality shift warp field, found himself in the 41st millennium, and decided he liked it there.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

To top off the army, should I get a Guard version of a Greater Knarloc as well?

You need a heavy-armor version. Put some Stormtroopers on top of some tortoises.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Cheers mate, I will make sure that the Rough Riders get their due recognition haha. Honestly, I just love the modeling opportunities with the unit, so im rolling with it. Had so much fun with the badgers.

Yea, I remember watching that movie, then seeing the praetorian guard. Made me collect them. Love that scene also. I like to imagine it when my men are gunning down the enemy during my games!
