Hello there,

does anybody know any way to get some cheap drop pod? I mean, I really would like to make a monodrop list, but I think they're quite expensive for a model that just sits on the table after arrives :S

Does anybody has any kind of suggestion for make them less expensive like for example autoconstruction or third party products?

You could make them out of mounting board, foam board, etc. I think some people have already made guides/templates for this.

You could do them from just the basic shape all the way up to a more detailed than the actual kit.

You mean not usable in your location or against you.

Honestly with friends who are poor beer can drop pods work well.

But model wise you are not really going to find an actual drop pod just alternatives.

You can also take a crack at scratch building there are plenty of patterns available.

You could also try this one:

Takes a while, but costs next to nothing.

I do not particularly like putting together those darn things but I have enough of them from a deal I got a while back that I cannot justify a home brew build.

Hope these help!

Yeah, I agree, buying a bit of plasticard and making a few close-enoughs yourself is probably going to be the best option here.

Nice links Talzvar !

There is a critical lack of detail on this one, but the overall shape is promising.

These have nicely done tops, but lack the signature fins

These are time consuming to build

I'm going to experiment with the body of the first two, with the middle ones thrusters, the fins off of the bottom one, and some sort of glued on card doors.

Cardboard.

People posted some fine templates to print out/cut out for them back in 3e/4e before there was a model.

Nice pods, Souza. Thanks for sharing the template. Where do the internal braces fit into the scheme of things?

Top and Bottom of doors, to help them hold their shape.

Makes gluing the doors to the hull much easier.

Aha, much obliged. Will definitely be trying this out before long. I bet they look pretty spiffy with a coat of paint. Would regular primer work on these? Or will it be too heavy as to warp the card stock?

The PVC pipe cap drop pods are a tried and true method from before GW made the model. A Space Wolves army using them was featured in one of the old GW catalogs.

I use just regular old cans of spray paint, and I've never had a problem with warping. Trust me, if assembled properly, they are actually quite sturdy.

The weather here has been rainy and bitter cold. Once that clears up I'll get some painting done and post updated pics to my P&M Blog. I plan on building at least 7 of them for my Blood Angels.

Sweet. So 10mm foam core for the base 5mm for the fins, and cardstock for everything else? Any specific kind of cardstock? sorry for all the questions. I'm a noob at this stuff

Use plasticard.

At .030 or thinner, it's not seriously more difficult to cut, and you get something that won't warp when it gets humid out or is left in the backseat of a car for more than a moment. Plus, you can superglue plastic.

If you're going to go to all the effort to cut out all the little pieces, do it out of a material that's better than cardboard.

Yes, the drop pods I'm building are just foam core, thin card, and glue.

Elmers 5mm foam board is pretty standard and easy to find. Use 2 layers to get the 10mm piece.

For the cardstock, you want something that is about the equivalent of a cereal box. I've seen people use 1mm plastic sheeting, but that adds to the expense, and is not as easy to work with.

I don't mind answering any questions you have about it, but you might want to check out my P&M Blog and move the discussion there, so we don't completely derail this thread.

True, true.

For me, those cost more than GW Drop Pods.

The ones I'm buidling are out of cardboard and foam core. I could build 4-5 of them for under $5 after a visit to the local dollar store.

You could get away with using 5mm thick cardboard, as long as you cover up the exposed edges with thin card. It's just a bit more work.
