Saturday morning, time: 5.58 GMT+1 here. Both cryptek edition and Necron data cards are already sold out on the US, UK and EU websites.
GW began selling them since....when, exactly? Friday evening 19:00 GMT? (correct me if I am wrong). That means things sold out within 10 hours.
Record.
Space Hulk sold out within 16 hours I remember.
So either GW produces waay to little of the limited edition stuff (dunno about the exact number of data card packs) or they simply are 1000 Necron players in the world who have nothing interesting to do on a Friday evening (insert witty stereotype about robotic personalities here)
Since each Cryptek edition was priced at £100, enjoy the cash injection of £100,000, GW. Can any other non-fortune-500 company make that much money within 10 hours?

I still can't believe that the fething cards are apparently a "limited edition" item. Something that would be fairly inexpensive and as regularly available as rulebooks, templates, or dice for literally any other game, but with 40k everything is "collectable" and only available in strictly limited numbers (which are obviously bought up immediately by eBay scalpers who then sell them for a profit).

At least GW tries to limit that market by making LE stuff "1 only" per person.
Still, youre right about the cards. Although the rulebook does say that if you use cards you have to shuffle and draw instead of rolling on a table. I'd prefer rolling dice than everyday shufflin'

The codex isnt in circulation yet, as the official release is next Saturday.
Some rumors have been making the rounds in natfka though, like the Overlord being 10 points cheaper now and having lost Everliving.

Necron cards are still available 17.5 hours after release here in Aus. Definately not a record, as someone mentioned earlier, Khaine was gone in minutes, skaven lasted less than an hour.
As for making 100,000 in 10 hours, well, yeah, given that it's a one time thing and not a normal average, many, many companies that deal in large projects will have very impressive numbers in the millions over a time preiod much shorter than 10 hours. And they didn't exactly make that much, it's just how much came in, you still have to factor in many, many costs from that. Even if it was taken as an average, that's still not a massive amount of income over a year (87.6 million pounds, of which you'd then have to remove all your operating and fixed costs). IIRC, GW's income is currently sitting around 35 - 40 million a year, so they normally take about 50,000 over a 10 hour period (about 1/2 of what got you so excited).

What's most confusing to me is that players buy this LE stuff in the first place. They offer so little extra short of a hardcover, cards, etc and you end up paying so much more, I guess so you can post pictures online. But who honestly cares if you have the LE book?
I say this being victim to this mindset once- I bought the LE 6th book, although it was almost HALF what some of these Necrons rules bundles are.
Well, I won't fault GW for selling it, it obviously seems to be working.

It's called cryptek edition? You never know - they may actually release more than 1 cryptek model... AND we may be able to pose them in different ways.

Plus the OCD kid in me dislikes the fact that thse limited editions do not have the same cover as the standard codices, so if you buy one, it feels odd to put it next to your other codices. I wish the LE cover were just a jacket or something

You can still buy it out here, GW priced it too high.

I think it's a bit of both. GW produces too little and also they've trained their hardcore enthusiast fans (and resellers) to sit up at the computer hitting refresh when a new release is coming out.
Their cunning scheme of making the most amount of money out of the least amount of customers is all going to plan

That's all they were when they first started doing them. Not only was it super lame but it cost about the same anyway.
If they insist on getting $100+ per book then they have to do more than just a jacket. Personally, even with all the extras you get, I still wouldn't pay the price they're asking because it just isn't worth it. There's no prestige to be had by buying a limited edition gaming rulebook.

Honestly, limited edition cards make sense. Maelstrom missions suck and even the people who do play them occasionally can just roll dice without buying another product, so how big is the market for the cards? If there aren't many potential customers then GW gets to use the "limited edition" gimmick to ensure that their whole production run without risking getting stuck with extra stock of a product that nobody else wants to buy.

Apple just set a world record by making $18 billion profit (not revenue) in one quarter (Q4 2014). They sold 34,000 iPhones an hour, 24 hours a day, for 90 days. (Obviously Apple is a Fortune 500 company, but it's still rather impressive!)

A lot of companies make sudden sales like that. £100,000 is less than a third of what GW needs to make per day on average to avoid losing money, it's actually not a lot unless you can repeat it frequently.

I'm sure it sounds like a lot, but it's a pathetically small amount.
£100k is the gross figure, we know from their annual reports that the average cost of designing and producing their products is a little under 30%, which is quite possibly higher for their books as they don't print them in house but that's still £30k off that figure.
I'm pretty sure that books are sales tax exempt in the UK, but if codexes don't qualify for some reason (or I'm mistaken) that's another 20% in VAT
So, broadly speaking they make between £50-70k after designing and making the books and getting them where we can buy them.
They then have to pay for keeping the lights on, Mr Kirby's gold-plated yacht, the rent on all those shops and the wages for those pesky staff running the stores that they just can't eliminate, and who insist on being able to feed themselves and have somewhere warm to live, rather than just turning up and working for free because they love Warhams so much, and this is where things get really expensive.
Once all these things are paid for, GW are probably in the possession of around £8k.
Not exactly the sort of cash for a global, publicly traded company to start running around the corridors with your pants on your head.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and £100k in ten hours is ~£88m turnover a year, and there's plenty of companies that turnover substantially more than that.

Don't think that will ever happen. If you want ork cards (and those were the first of the cards with the new tactical objectives and everything, which dropped in July 2014) you're going to have to dig around on ebay, or be super lucky and find some local store tucked away somewhere that still has them. The new army cards have always been LE. The basic rulebook cards got reprinted, but don't expect that to happen with the army specific ones.
