http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2015/02/06/legend-of-zelda-netflix-series/

The Legend of Zelda,” one of the most popular videogame series of all time, is in the works as a television show at Netflix.

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

The “Zelda” games have traditionally included swords and sorcery, like “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings,” but typically with a more light-hearted, kid-friendly tone.

Netflix is said to be working closely with Nintendo, the Japanese game developer that has made about 20 “The Legend of Zelda” games since the original, which was released in the U.S. in 1987.

Nintendo is very protective of its intellectual property and has allowed few adaptations over the years. An animated “Legend of Zelda” series ran for just one season in 1989. A 1993 movie based on Nintendo’s “Super Mario Bros.” was an infamous bomb.

As it is still seeking a writer to work on the series, Netflix has a long road to travel before a “Legend of Zelda” series actually becomes a reality. It’s also possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.

A Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment. A Nintendo spokesman said the company “doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.”

It probably won't happen knowing Nintendo and their properties, but Netflix has a good run so far on originals. This could be really good

Cmon guys, if it's going to be remotely like GoT and coupled with how Netflix has been doing so well with originals...... I see this having the potential to kick booty

No. This is pretty much doomed with how Link is as a character.

The silent protagonist works for video games because players can impart themselves into the character. Once you give them more lines and have to define their character outside of the broad strokes needed for a game, you begin to alienate and upset the target audience.

I mean, Link has been given a voice, character development and speaking lines twice before. How'd those go?

The biggest problem with this is that in order for it to be good its going to have to be way darker than any Zelda game. And thats probably not going to happen.

I dunno, Majora's Mask was pretty damn dark, and is probably thought of as the second-best or so LoZ game in the series, second only to OoT.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

You're using the best ways to prove it'll suck because those are absolutely terrible. Of course using that line of thinking it'll suck. How about looking at the rest of the LoZ material, and mate that with a light version of GoT and stop being pessimistic. It really has a good chance of being good. Netflix has made several originals that have great writing, whether it's dark or funny or what, they've proved they can do it.

He said LotR cartoon. The Hobbit one was good. the LotR were hilariously bad.

Only good thing to come out of the cartoon LotR was the "Where there's a whip..." song.

Why would making it dark make it better? I've had gaks that have been pretty dark before but that didn't always make them my best ones.

Because the very best Zelda games had a dark theme to them. Majora's Mask, Ocarina of time, and Twilight princess all had a dark tone.

None of these had a very happy go lucky story.

Really if you look at the lore, all Zelda games are pretty dark. Link, Zelda, and Ganon are just three people who constantly get reincarnate to continue their war of good vs evil over and over and over again in a never ending cycle. The good people(s) of Hyrule, are just the innocent bystanders in an unending cosmic war that has ravaged the land like never before with total destruction from mountain to shore! No matter how many times Link wins, Ganon will just come back later to start it all over again.

it's damn dark as is XD

TBH if they made a movie of the Wind Waker they'd at least have a rather definite kill-scene on Ganondorf.

I've often seen the new BBC series of 'The Musketeers' as a more family friendly version of Game of Thrones.

The actress who plays "Mi'lady" is basically a spitting image of [strikethrough]Cersei Lannister[/strikethrough] [strikethrough]Sarah Connor[/strikethrough] Lena Headey.

Game of thrones is one of the very few shows which has consistently had more viewers on every episode, in the successive seasons, every single time. (I.E Season 2 ep 1 had more viewers than Season 1 ep 1) It's no suprise it's a tagline!

There are really not a lot of shows that can claim that, much less for four seasons in a row!
