Subject: Artisan Guild Miniatures - News about Sculpting, Casting and Production (Dwarf Hero at page 5!)
At the moment, SPOILER is not working properly on this first post, so we had to make visible all the images in the first post, we will try to fix this as soon as this bug is solved
Hello there, we are Artisan Guild Miniatures, a supersmall company composed by me (Andrea Tarabella) and Francesca Musumeci. Unlucky English is not my first language, so I still have some problem writing properly We are working as freelancer 3d artists, but we are also going to start a new miniature line: Artisan Guild Miniatures. Our portfolio have a lot of miniatures from other companies, like Slaughterball, Roots of Magic, some models for the early Erebus Studios, and really a lot of work with Raging Heroes (and we still work with them )
This topic will be used to post news about the production, publish images of the miniature from first to last stages. The first post will be always updated with the new stuff! At this time, we are sculpting the first miniatures of the line, and who knows, maybe we will be able soon to launch a Kickstarter campaign! In this first stages, critiques and comments on our 3d renderings are appreciated and much needed! In a very near future we will continue our progress posting informations about casting and production.
Our aim is to give life to some Armies, starting with the Dwarves and going to Barbarians, monsters and Orcs. Every army will have the same models coming both male and female, so you can mix or choose your prefered version of each troop. We are not going to write descriptions and informations about the miniatures backstory rightnow, even if we are working on two games (Rpg and Skirmish), right now we are focusing on the sculpts quality. We will make sure that the prints and the casting will match perfectly the details of the renders. Even if we have some sculpts of each army +50% done, we want to make a clean fresh start, so here we have our first miniatures:
Dwarven Rangers (6/10 done) These multypart tough guys came with an Axe-gun, but extra arms and some extra heads are under sculpting too! Take the opportunity to give us feedbacks and tips on wich weapons you prefer as extra. The 5th and the 10th are Captains, we will normally make Captain a bit different from the other troopers. Obviously you can mix, swap and rotate parts to make a different Captain, or even give him other weapons (or keep it as the other standard trooper).
Dwarven Warriors (5/10 done) They will came with alternate weapons (Axes). The Captain comes with both round shield, and the huge tower shield!
Orc Berserkers (2/10 done) Here the big Orc Berserkers. These guys are really huge compared to the dwarves!
Wood Trolls (1/3 done) The huge and scary Wood Troll (unit 1 of 3) is coming! We decided to record the full sculpting process from scratch, so you can actually see how we make miniatures. We want to be 100% trasparent with you: this is how we make miniatures in 3d, even if we don't have a concept. Sometime it's just fun to concept in 3d...
Thanks for watching our video!
Let us know what you think of this guys, he's really accostumated to hear bad things like "ugly Troll, get away!!!" that you can really be honest. This miniature will be huge... we don't know 100% how much, but surely HUGE.
Take the opportunity to visit our Facebook page (clicking on the banner), and feel free to support us using our Banner on your signature! Here the forum code to use it, simply copy and paste:
Do not forget to give us your opinion, critiques and comments are really appreciated! We hope to start producing as soon as possible, but in the meantime, sculpts will come out monthly (weekly if everything goes well!).
Cheers and thanks!

The mentioning of "barbarians" is most interesting - as, given the already shown dwarven designs, I already start to hope that your barbarians will be the ones I have been searching for: i.e. barbarians that are leaner/meaner than the existing ranges who all tend to be either Conan-bodybuilders or vikings in chainmail and tabards.
Give me GW-sized (28-35 mm heroic), bare chested, bearded, viking axe vielding, frenzied runners that are lean and mean...
... and I'll spend close to a thousand dollars

When your kickstarter goes live, my wallet is going dead!
I didn't notice that you were working on more sci-fi dwarves, I thought it was all fantasy. I plan on playing Forgefathers in Warpath so that's really interesting to me.
I also had no clue you guys were associated with Raging Heroes. That's a really good company to have on your side when this does go to KS!

Hello and thanks for your kind comment! Actually we have no plan for sci-fi characters, these are Leather and Metal dwarves from our fantays Universe. The truth is that with the right color scheme (and I'm sure you had the right one in mind ) every model could be used for sci-fi or fantasy. Anyway, I'll take this as a good feedback, I love that our models could be used for both universes!

Hello! We are really happy to hear this. I'm not sure what kind of barbarian you are looking for; we are making several kind. There will be lot of Heroes and Heroines, aswell light, medium and heavy infantry troopers.
I can show you a Early Sketch about the Delelok: it's a bit rough and the design should improve, it's just an early concept.
The first one is a Shield Maiden, there will be at least 5 of them (like all the other kind of troops); but you are probably more interested in the Berserkir. Let us know what you think about them, we really need all the feedback and possible, especially in the early design phase.
I will mostly sculpt the women of this army.
In our universe, these barbarians (named Deleloks) are descendents of the Dwarves, so some of the decoration of the more heavy troopers will be similiar.
Cheers!

Not a fan of the shoes, but very good, nevertheless.
You probably will like more the Dwarven Berserkir, they will have no shoes at all We will make something more like the Delelok Berserkir (the concept is in the first post), but stout and shorter. No fency jewels on the Dwarven Berserkir

Interesting balljoint design on the arms. I've always wondered why designers don't do that a lot. From the top of my head, I can't really think of a single example apart from yourselves.
Personally I prefer the cuter style of dwarf but the sculpts look technically awesome so I hope others will go for them.
I could see myself getting some of the humans though. That kinda lithe and sinewy style appeals o me.
Thanks all for the appreciations! Finally the 4th Dwarf Warrior is joining the ranks to fight with his shield brothers, but he have not forget to bring his wooden pint! I'm updating also the first post with this image.

Any of them going to be as old and gnarly as that male berserkir?

Some of the newer GW Dwarves have this type of arm. It is more limited in the way they've done it though.
EDIT: I love that the regular warriors have the details like that pint. It makes guys that would be rank and file infantry usable for RPGs. Do those dwarves look good if you build them without the shoulder pads or are those pretty much necessary?

The (man)Berserkr is not so old, the lines in the sketch could be a bit exaggerated, especially because he's in trance. Indeed there will be old Berserkir for both the genders, especially for heroes and heroines, as an avarage Berserkr doesn't live too much, they don't fight in a really defensive way If some of them are Old and Gnarly, it means that they won thousands battles, heroes of course

You named it! There will be some Woar Rider on the way. In our universe there are (giant) Woars, a beast that resemble a Wolf and a Boar at the same time.
The woar riders will have special body parts, but once you got the other guys too, you can mix and swap with most of the dwarves. In the end you could keep the Woar Rider legs and put over it the heavy Dwarven Warriors.
Any suggestions for the Woar Rider weapons? They would came with some throwing weapons like hammers and axes, and maybe a long weapon too.
We saved a special chained hook for the Flame Dwarves (formerly Duum-Lok), wich will be probably used for the riders of Kalkotaurs Cheers

A lot of hammers are massive but I would suggest a smaller hammer mounted on a slightly longer haft like actual warhammers or something like a dwarven halberd. A lot of mounted weapons tend to have lighter weapons with longer handles to allow someone mounted to reach down to people on the ground. In contrast, ranged weapons on mounts tend to be shorter weapons like a shortbow or thrown weapons. Using a longer bow would mean you have to raise the whole thing up to turn and shoot something on your other side but with smaller ranged weapons you just twist your torso. If you know what a mancatcher is that could be neat as an option too.
Necros wrote: Never been a big dwarf mini fan in the past, but these look really great. When will the minis be available?
Right now we are not sure about that, we are planning and checking every option possible, it's hard to tell. The good part is that as the sculpts will be ready soon there will be not to wait too much time once we start a foundraising to ship the models, just the casting time as sculpt will be surely done.

We had in mind long-(smaller)hammers or thin halberd like axes, to be long enough for a rider and not an obstacle, so this should work fine
Today had been very productive, in fact the third and last (as male) Dwarf Warrior has joined the ranks! I'm updating the first post with him, and we will proceed with the lineup rendering like for the rangers.
Do you guys think the first post is too long and full of images? We had in mind to make just lineup render and than "spoiler" for the bigger ones, what do you think about it?

WHEN you guys figure out how to produce these beyond 3D printing - be it resin casting, metal casting or plastics - you are going to sell a ton of them!

Always so kind Alpharius! We are making a good plan, patience... We will came up with top notch quality printing and casting, so who like our sculpt will not be disappointed.

The video was nice to watch. Seeing that you did the hair as a separate subtool was like a light switch for me. I've worked on sculpts before and got frustrated because even after having a mesh I was happy with for the body, the hair just never worked out. Thanks for sharing your process!
Is there a series of tutorials on Zbrush that you recommend? You guys should consider doing some, especially for the process of sculpting models and preparing them for print. I would buy that series. A lot of people detail one step or the other but it's hard to find the whole thing start to finish (I haven't)
That's my father printing a superhuge version for our home Something like 30cm or more, but that's not for Artisan Guild Miniatures.
For the tutorials, check the Zclassroom, about making one us, when we find some time maybe.
Now I would avoid to go off topic

Hi! Amazing job on the miniatures you showed!! If everything is going to be that quality, I'm going to kkep an eye on your project!!
I have two questions, first I don't know if it has been asked yet, but I don't find the answer, so, what is the material you are planing for the miniatures?? HIPS?? True resin?? Metal??
And second, you coment about dwarf, barbarians, orcs and trolls. Any chance to see other races from the Fantasy settings?? With the quality of your renders, I would love to see your take on the classic elfs, truly knightly humans, and maybe something more exhotic like the dragonborn (dragon humanoids) and tiefling (half human, half demon) from the D&D lore.
Thanks, and keep the good work!

Thanks! About the material, it's not sure 100% but we love resin, so we are focusing on looking for this. For a such small company (more "couple +1month and half old baby" than company!) like us we should be very careful and evaluate any possible chance. After the plan is ready, there will be a lot of miniatures already done and ready for printing-casting, so not a long wait time.
About your second question, yes, there will be something that resamble classical fantasy races. Before start sculpting we wrote a role playing game and a skirmish game: these two take place in a fantasy world with some classical races a bit revised.
There will be Satyrs (Arverians), there will be Alfar (Horned elves, like Magic the Gathering ones), there will be some sort of natural stone golem (Ummath), some squiddish tentacular evil guys (that resembles the mind flayers), the fire dwarves (Duum-Lok), the Orcs (humanlike orcs, not so exaggerated like GW ones), three races of humans (barbarians, imperials and some with more speel-feeling), the corrupted Souless (sort of dark corrupted humans in dark desert armor, similiar to morrowind bonemold but darker) and even other stuff. Right now we are slowly starting making the basical miniatures for the dwarf faction, so we can start the production easier. For the other races, we should evaluate who's better to made first, and who later.
Automatically Appended Next Post: We have prepared the art for the Lineup, so we can just that on the first post and all the single model under Spoiler. The problem is that spoiler don't work, it won't open anything. Anyone else had this problem?
I had no issue making it working in the Troll post (some post ago), but in the first post Spoilers doesn't work :(
