The title says it all. I have to go with the Necron Ghost Ark (my current project, actually).

In the time of the Necrontyr, they were basically hearses, transporting the bodies of dead nobles to the grave. When the Phaerons ordered biotransference, those unwilling to undergo the procedure were loaded onto Ghost Arks and dragged to the transfer chambers. Following the War in Heaven, the Ghost Arks were fitted with Gauss Flayer Arrays and used as troop transports for those they had once forcibly taken to their doom. It's all so gloriously tragic.

Id have to go with Space wolves progression. Start off as a blood claw, slowly transition to a grey hunter, go long fang, and eventually lone wolf if the rest of your pack is wiped out.

Its a three way tie for me

1. Tactical Space Marine squad - The true and classic space marine.

2. Imperial Guardsmen - Die for the Emperor or die trying.

3. Standard Ork boy - WAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!

My other favourite are the Skitarii Vanguard Infiltrators. They kill with the power of song!
They emit a sonic vibration that overloads the sense of everyone who hears it, driving them mad with that annoying beep in their ears. But to their fellow AdMech, the same signal instead sounds like hymns to the Omnissiah, and so everyone thinks of Infiltrators as wise saints even though they are in fact brutal emotionless killing machines

Mandrakes, cause who doesn't love creepy mysterious creatures that simply materialise in shadows to slit your throat?

or Tempestus Scions cause mere mortals free falling from space ships in low orbit is bad ass.

Tau manta - that thing always makes me think of the frigate entering the atmosphere in the halo 3 level "the ark"
sternguard - the elite warriors of the elite warrior faction
dark reapers - Oh my friggin' god they look bad !

the list goes on (I'm very indecisive) but those are the ones off the top of my head

Ork Nobz in general. Take an already awesome ork and have him get bigger, stronger, meaner, and greener to get a Nob. These super badass orks are packing power klaws and big choppas to bust skulls and take bits. To turn up the awesome even more you take that green beast and throw him some stompy mega armor to get a Mega Nob.

Of course some nobz prefer the finer things in life and seek out the most snazzy shootas with the most flash bits that shoots the loudest dakka. These dakka obsessed nobz are known as Flash Gitz and they unleash a torrent of dakka firing whatever ammo their ammo runt handed them which could range from big shoota bullets to mini railgun slugs that turn armor into swiss cheese.

Necron Warriors have a special place in my heart. Hordes of them waking up only to start purging the life of the planet they are on. That's going from novels like Ciaphis Cain, among others. I know not all necrons are like that, but that's just the dynasty of crons that I like to see.

I feel like noise marines are a metaphor for society. Exposing ourselves to the same thing day-in, day-out, slowly becoming desensitized to it and needing to consume more of it for just a little kick. I like a lot of the fluff surrounding the Slaaneshy stuff

Warp Talons. Possessed Chaos Raptors that can teleport anywhere they want and possibly don't even need space ships because they can use warp travel themselves, all using lightning claws and able to sniff out and chase a target anywhere.

Now if only they didn't completely suck.

Dreadnoughts. The tragedy of the whole situation. Half dead warriors, crippled in body and mind, pushing forward with only their will and sense of duty. That's cool.

It's like "The Revenant"... with a mech.

I'm gonna go with eldar Rangers/Pathfinders. The whole idea of them chosing something else then the stoic life of the craftworld or the extreme decadence of commoragath makes them a sort of middle road alternative. I really like the idea. They could have just been named "path of the Wanderer" or something but instead we have a unit that's a bit unique in all of 40k lore.

As a close second I have to say Deathwatch kill teams. Just great thought out lore.

Third would be the insuqisitors and retinue.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

I have several units who could claim to be my favorites.

Incubi/Striking Scorpions: Obsessed martial artist and killers wielding a fearsome weapon and an armor capable of resisting most weapons. The Striking Scorpion being a mirror to them with less lethality, but more stealth.

Ork Nobz: The epidemy of badass in its most raw and unrefined form. Pure brute strength with a huge chain axe to teach any suposed «Demi God of War» what getting your ass kicked feels like.

Stomrboyz: Strapping yourself to a missile with no guiding system to reach the ennemy line faster seems like a good idea. I am acutaly disapointed when none of them die in my movement phase.

Seraphim: They match Space Marines in combat, fly and are masters of Gun-Fu. Too bad the model are aged.

The burning pits of Hades, also known as Sweden in summer

All in all, the 'humble' Space Marine. Like Ratius' pick, their power really is not made justice on the tabletop, but as soon as you get into a game like Space Marine where you're not limited by colossal simplification, the sheer might of the Astartes becomes evident.

To the common man, they are beings of divinity, wading through lesser foes, scything down the enemy without relent and hurling aside mortal warriors as leaves in the wind. They have many tools, weapons, armour, tactics, specialists, vehicles, and yet in the end it's the massive superhuman within that makes all the difference.

The change I would make is allow adults to become Astartes, and of both genders. That way, the Imperium would select warriors who have already proven themselves to be exceptional to 'ascend' and fight in a new division entirely, head and shoulders over the common man.

And do that better than AoS.

For Eldars, Wraithlords and Wraithguards: heroes of old pulled from their eternal rest and given a new body of wraithbone, living in a world that's neither living nor death... Quite awesome.

For Necrons, it has to be Wraiths and Immortals. Wraiths are really scary and look really awesome, also, the fact that they can phase between dimensions is awesomely intriguing. Immortals are the perfect warriors of the Necrons: durable, dependable, relentless, much more than warriors.
