Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

I've hired the greatest angry marine artist in the land to make me an angry marine army! One of my angry marine models is going to be a Company Ancient with a banner, and I've asked him to combine some different elements of things I enjoy into one centerpiece model. It's going to be an Angry marine standard bearer with too many purity seals / oaths of moment with a "Rage Troll Face" Banner Planted in downed Chaos Marine's butt, a holstered storm bolter, chugging a bottle of Captain Morgan rum, wearing a green lime helmet like someone's avatar.

We like different slogans, and have given up trying to convince each other and agreed to crowd-source which would be better.

Option #1: A scroll at the top of the standard that says {ALWAYS ANGRY} with the picture in the middle, and a scroll at the bottom of the standard that says {ALL THE TIME}
Option #2: The slogan "PURE AS F**K" where critical letters are obfuscated by excessive purity seals.
Option #3: SEMPER IRATUS

Here are a few pictures of the things we're trying to distill into a single model.

This is the face that is going to be on the banner that needs a slogan.

This is the scene we are going to recreate - roughly. The standard bearer is probably going to have one foot planted on top of the downed chaos marine like a trophy.

NSFW
Spoiler:

These are the excessive oaths of moment that we're talking about.

I'd like your opinions on which slogan best fits the angry marines motif.

They are all strong choices but I had to go with the bad Latin

I've heard this twice now. Can you tell me how this ties into the meme, or where it comes from, or if there is more to it? I feel like it's an inside joke that I don't know.

I mean, there is going to be a lot of FFFF and UUUUU all around the place. But I don't know where your precise syntax originates from and I've heard it twice.

You could use "purissimus, in iram" (purity in anger).

SUCK MY GENESEED HERETIC!!!!!

Man; I really wanted #1, but I'm pretty sure that the community has spoken. I'm glad I didn't offer up any option, or I'm pretty sure my banner would say "BOATY MCBOATFACE WUZ HERE"

If you really wanted #1 then go with #1. They're your models; nothing says you have to listen to us.

Find space for both somewhere. Maybe have Semper Iratus on a tank?

My Latin is rusty, but wouldn't it technically be semper furens? Semper iratus sounds like you are easily provoked to anger. Semper furens sounds like you are out of your mind with rage.

Come to think of it, a lot of Latin adjectives for anger overlap with insanity... hm.

But...my OP. I wanted #1. The guy I hired to do this work wanted #2. We agreed to let the community decide.

It's GW, so closer to Pig Latin than actual Latin is entirely appropriate.

In the end, the army belongs to you. Not to us, and certainly not to the guy you're PAYING to paint it for you. If he can't follow your specifications, then you need to find another painter.

In the end, I had an idea. My artist had another idea. I believed both ideas had merit. I decided to subject those ideas and their merits to the Dakka community, because I didn't feel strongly enough to decide I was right and he was wrong. Since the banner in question is intended to inspire laughter across the tabletop from me, I polled the community on what would be most likely to be awesome and laughter inspiring.

I don't know everything, but I do know the value of asking other people for their opinions.

Ah that reminds me of a favourite quote from the 3 Musketeers.

“People, in general,” he said, “only ask advice not to follow it; or if they do follow it, it is for the sake of having someone to blame for having given it.”

Cynical, but entertaining.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

That's a textbook case of people believing that the majority opinion supports their opinion, and they were seeking validation for their opinion. Having discovered that they do NOT in fact have the majority opinion, they discard that opinion as irrelevant.

This is not that; we genuinely were curious what people want, and this banner will indeed use Option #3 because the majority has spoken.

It's also good to ask for the opinions of others as sometimes it helps you actually cement your own thoughts. Definately a fan of the process.

Also I just thought of another benefit t9 option 3. You can shout it loudly and angrily in almost any setting without causing offence (except maybe to dedicated Latin scholars, but who really cares about those guys )

And that's a big part of the charm of 'Semper Iratus'. It's bad Latin, but it's bad in a manner that makes it more likely that the average gamer will 'get it'.

I was at work yesterday white-boarding through some complicated business stuff, and my boss' boss (a former marine) came into my office (as a former army guy) to ask if I'd heard about the first woman marine infantryman or something or another....I don't quite remember. I do remember I did pause in my white boarding, change to a red marker and write in all caps "SEMPER IRATUS"

He says, "Well, I know what Semper is..."

And I said, "ALWAYS ANGRY"

He doesn't know 40k, and had no idea why I started laughing.
