A Protoss colony world

Not as many finished entries this time as in some previous months, but pretty good quality throughout. My five votes went to:
Bellerophon: I absolutely love the Biel-Tan color scheme, and you executed it amazingly!
DV8: That bust is really imaginative, and you did a good job on it. It really makes me think of something from Alita: Battle Angel.
feltmonkey: Great job on that AT-ST! The weathering and battle damage really sells it.
Jadenim: You did great on those Spindle Drones. The bases are what really caught my eye though, as they are exceptional.
Modock: What can I say, you've really got a knack for making the Infinity models look great. This might be my favorite one you've done.

As for my own entry, I'm happy with it, and I certainly enjoyed doing it. That should be the goal for everyone, right? Shout out to Paradigm for taking the time out of his busy college life to run these challenges and set up the polls and everything. See you all in the Wild World challenge.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Modock: Everything is nicely highlighted with lots and lots of small blends!
Chris56: Love the expression of your goblins in the last pic Also really like the turqiouse armor.

There are lots of easy ways to get better miniature photos. The simplest is to get a sheet of black or white paper, curve it gently against a vertical surface, place your mini on the flat part, then shine a cold light source into it.

You could make a basic light box if you wanted too, or brands like greenstuffworld make easy fold up ones (which I use)

I noticed plenty of photos are way overexposed, which means loss of details, shadows and washed out pictures.

You really need to tone down the lightning. Light box is dandy but you can do perfectly with out it.
This is my set up. 2 table lamps with plain A4 sheets of white paper.

I tend to use only one of the two light strips in my box, and usually try and angle it towards an eastward window in the morning (provided its not too bright a day)

I was just commenting over in another blog about pictures.

We spend so much time, effort and money on the paints and minis, we sometimes neglect the photo side when we share them online. Not that it’s needed at the FLGS, or display shelf, but for many of us, online is where we spend most of our hobby time.

You don’t need an expensive camera. I do most of my work with an old point and click Cannon S95. Some quick research shows it’s a 10 megapixel, where my not quite as old iPhone 6 has a 12 megapixel camera. Any halfway decent cell phone these days has enough umph to get decent results.

You don’t need an expensive set up. A couple of good lamps, a decent backdrop, some diffusers (which could be as simple as parchment paper and cardboard). I use a lightbox that came with lamps and cost less then a tactical squad.

You don’t need fancy techniques or know-how. Brace your camera, let the autofocus do its thing, watch your zoom and depth of focus.

You don’t need pricy photo editing software. What we need is basic cropping and white balance. Sure, you can go all-in and tweak colors and contrast, but you can still get that in free programs.

I love looking at pictures of cool looking models. Living vicariously via other people’s paint benches. Also, for blogs where people ask for feedback and advice, being able to clearly see what’s going on helps a LOT. I honestly think we should be recommending basic camera tricks as often as we tell people to thin their paints and drill their gun barrels.

Old pic of my lightbox:

Came with the side lamps, folds up nice and tight.

To clarify a little more on the depth of focus:
If you have your camera real close to your mini, the autofocus of probably going to select a specific part that it thinks is important, and the rest might be fuzzy. Sometimes this makes for cool effects, but often you might want to take a step back and take a longer shot. Then you can crop the picture down to just the mini. With a decent camera (the one on your phone is probably more than adequate) you should still have plenty of resolution, but the whole subject will be in focus. There are tweaks you can do with f-stop, exposure, and all sorts of other technical sounding terms to fiddle with this. But the basic trick of backing up and cropping is the easy fix.

Brace your camera. I don’t use a tripod, just set it on a box. But you don’t want to jiggle it and blur things. In an ideal world, you would also use a remote, or a timed shutter so the bump of your finger hitting the button doesn’t jostle things.

Shotgun pictures. With digital, there is no cost for developing film. Take a lot, choose the best.

I (and a number of other people here) use a free program called Phoscape X. It can do cropping and white balance, and makes collages quick and easy. Mac and PC.

--

I’m no expert. The pros out there could probably give you a lot more advice. These are some basic, table-top quality equivalent, tips for getting better pictures. In every one of these contests there are entries I’d love to get a better look at. Also, we get 6 pictures, use them! Show us that profile/back pic. Give us a zoom on that bloody axe. Pick out your favorite part of the mini and showcase it. Try something new on a bit? Let us see it.

Modock, not only did you do that dog-boy so fast but your job on it was first rate.

DV8's bust goes without mention.

Tikay: classic, gives a great solid look.

DanceofSlannesh: NMM looks great and its simple yet striking. I liked it when I first say it. Loved the flesh color choice and dark hair. Gives a villainous feel.

Chris56: Stippling AND good color AND good custom work.

There were actually a lot of ones this month that I would vote for if I had more votes to give.

Loved the classic Biel-Tan job.

My own was mediocre and I needed better lighting to show it off. But, it was nice to have the push to get it finished despite life. So if I had something for this month I'd do another round Maybe next month.

Still good job all round from everyone.

This is how we ALL get better really. I think challenges, win or lose, are all beneficial. It's all about pushing your boundaries and working in a time crunch to get your skill level up.

Thanks Meatybitz!
The standard this month was insanely high again. It’s nice just to be on the same competition with you guys.
I usually hate Orks but my 2 favourites this month were Chris56 and Midgetgems (because Mutley).
Power Elephant, that tiny guy on the huge base Actually gives me a lump in the throat. Painted minis aren’t meant to do that! Proper art.
DV8 jaw dropping.
Just awesome work from everyone again.

A fantastic standard again, and some beautiful work. I'm writing these comments while simultaneously and incredibly nervously watching the cricket world cup final so there WILL be dips in my coherence.

Nevelon - Solid work as ever. I like the Eldar best of the two. Have you got a bit of the blue bleeding into the silver on the techmarine's shoulder or is it the photo? Easy enough to tidy up later if so. You've picked out all the gold detail well. As a side note, I don't know what's more impressive - your streak of having entered every month, or that you're always always first to enter and first on this list.

Rybrook - Another techmarine, and another decent one. Your photos don't completely do it justice as you say, but they're not as bad as you say, and look better when you click through. As for the model, the face is terrific, and the detail on things like the wires helps the overall effect.

Queen_annes_revenge - Vibrant colours and an unusual and interesting conversion. I hope you don't mind me saying this, and it should be taken in relation to the super-high standards you tend to set, but I feel like some of the elements are battling each other a bit. It's still great, obviously.

Jamie Shred - Nice and grungy. The guy without a helmet is my favorite. Your biggest problem is the mould lines.

Captain Brown - This really fits the theme perfectly. It's got to be one of the weirdest vehicles in the 40K universe. You've done a really clean job on it as well. It looks great!

Bellerophon - Another very clean job. Nice glowing edge highlights and nice freehand thorns.

DV8 - One of my favorites this month. Everything about the bust is great, but it's the patterning on the kimono that I really love. Not just the flower parts, which are great, but the texture you've added with the diagonal lines. Superb.

Vejut - I love the character of these. Not easy to add interest to purely robotic miniatures, but blue and gold are good choices of spot colours, and the bases are lovely.

bantha_beast - Nice and clean, good details, and I like the hazard stripes. I always like hazard stripes for some reason.

Chris56 - Another of my favorites. Great colours, and one of the best pure paintjobs I think we've seen from you. All the weathering on the armour is great, the OSL is lovely, and I love the book of Wotsit Notes. Obviously it's a great conversion (kitbash? I'm never sure what the difference is) as well. The only problem is that you've got some focusing issues on one or two of the photographs. Brilliant work overall.

Gulgog TufToof - Some lovely bold highlights on there, particularly on he hat. Your photography continues to improve as well!

ZergSmasher - Yellow and navy blue are good choices of colours You've done a really clean job as well. You could add a few really bright spot highlights on the armour to really make the joins pop, but it looks good as it is.

meatybitz - Really nice work. I like the bit of weathering on the bottom of the cloak to tie it into the base. The runes are amazing - are they freehand?

Jadenim - Simple but effective. Good idea to photograph them on the board pieces. It's really making me want to play Blackstone Fortress. I never have the time. :(

Argive - Looks decent and solid, nice bold colours. Tiny photos though, so difficult to really make much out.

Paradigm - Very nice painting. A bit cleaner than usual for you, but without sacrificing the atmosphere. It's kind of hilarious that you've made a dwarf suspended from a balloon look sinister.

Midget Gems - A brilliant idea very well executed. Lovely shade of purple too.

Maharg - Really weird and disturbing. Thanks for not making his twig and berries too prominent in the photos.

dukeofbeer - An interesting take on this model. I'm not 100% sold on the black skin but it does look distinctive. The striped texture on the under-armour looks great.

Tyranid Horde - Nice colours, I like the maroon coats with gold lining, and the glowing eyes. It's not helping my Blackstone Fortress craving, though.

Power Elephant - Great idea for a diorama, and nice use of cold colours.

DanceofSlaanesh - Another fine example of the clean, cel-shaded style you're using on these Stormcasts. I don't know how it fits the theme, but it looks nice.

Modock - Another of my favorites. Superb technical skill on display.

Tikay Fortooun - Shame your model was missing to start with. Count your total as 1 more, as I would have given you a vote, but it wasn't there when I voted. Clean, detailed, great colours. The photos are a bit small, that's my only criticism. I'd like to have a closer look at it.

Great work everyone! England have restricted New Zealand to 241, but have lost Jason Roy early. I have no nails left as I have bitten them all right down.

Yes, the runes are free and. With a brush this time just to keep my practice up, rather than my pens.

I did a lot of experiments on this model. Both with the new contrasts. The wraithbone was entirely new technique mixing contrasts with normal paints. The cloak was my first push to shade and modify the greenstuff world color shifts.

It’s actually a blue metallic trim, highlighted with silver. But might be a little sloppy. I’ve traditionally done my techmarines in full metallic silver armor, to represent their artificer armor, but I went with a more traditional blue for this guy. I did however keep some of the blue metallic on his trim to help him match his peers.

I don’t think I’ve always been at the top of the pile, but do endeavor to get a post in early. It’s nice to be able to just open the vote thread and not have to search for my name to see how many votes I’ve (not) gotten. Generally I know what I’m going to do for all the potential challenges during the selection phase, so it’s just a mater of digging up an old primed pic to toss into the thread once it’s up. And as I’m not up to much most of the time, I’m generally online when it does go up.

Thanks for the feedback Feltmonkey. The main culprit for the mold line issue is the pvc knight from the starter set, the one with the slight lean. I find Pvc a real PITA to clean up but will try harder next time

This weekend was a bit of a sports weekend (which it seems I'm not alone in), so my attention was between house tasks, Wimbledon and the Formula 1.

Good quality all round this month once again. I tried out a white background instead of my usual black background and found difficulty taking decent photos. The of a tripod for my phone is a bit of a killer right now as there is always some blur even if I'm absolutely still.

Cheers feltmonkey for the comment, glad you like the cloaks. I hope the yellow contrast paint was a convincing gold, I don't have a dedicated gold metallic paint at the minute so I hope that was passable.

Onto some feedback for this month! Hope I don't miss anyone and hope I don't offend anyone, it's fun to give some comments.

Nev: Good looking duo, the Singer is my favourite of the two, the bone looks sweet!

Rybrook: Another techmarine! I like the weathering you've done on the servo arms.

QAR: This one embodies the theme the most in my opinion, I like the combo of models, a good blend of natural and synthetics.

Jamie Shred: I know the Brotherhood are meant to be nice and grungy and you've nailed that, the yellow lenses are a nice spot light to the models.

Cap Brown: Great looking tank, crisp black with subtle highlights, very nice.

Bellerophon: Another stellar pain job from yourself, I wish I had the patience to layer up my greens like you do!

DV8: Gorgeous bust, another one nailing the theme. That kimono is amazing.

Vejut: Good job on the robo doggies, the bases are really good and the metals look great.

bantha_beast: I haven't seen these in years, great job on them, the pale skin is what I imagine from a servitor.

Chris56: Great combo, I could definitely see an army of these as counts as Mega Nobz. The scheme is great and the weathering is great.

Gulgog TufToof: Man that gun arm is just sweet, I love the join with the flesh, the pain boy has been doing some serious work!

feltmonkey: The AT-ST is one of my favourite SW vehicles, love the paint job. The subtle weathering is really well done.

ZergSmasher: Cool colour scheme and the yellow is a lovely contrast to the overall model. Some spot colours would set it off but it's meant to be stealthy so it's great!

meatybitz: Looks good! I'm a sucker for Eldar and this is no exception. The photos let you down a little bit but the black cloak looks good with all the shifting colours.

Jadenim: Love these, the bases look awesome and actually match the board tiles, something that I'm not doing nor is anyone else I've seen so props! I've finished some of my own and they're neat little models to paint.

Argive: Another set of Eldar I'm keen to see bigger photos of! The checkerboards on the base are cool and look great with your scheme.

Paradigm: Lovely work, muted tones suit these guys to a T! Personally prefer the scheme you've done to the 'Eavy Metal studio.

Midget Gems: Lovely purple for this model, you've done a solid job making it look Dastardly! The rim of the base needs a lick of colour to finish it imo.

Maharg: Freaky looking model, the whips and the scarring are particularly good, well done!

dukeofbeer: I like the blues you've used on his arms and legs, very striking when coupled with the black skin tone.

Tyranid Horde: More time spent on this would have gone a long way, and you forgot to gloss the base for the added Blackstone effect. Gal Vorbak Red is a lovely paint though.

Power Elephant: Creepy atmosphere is what does this for me. I'm of the opinion a diorama piece shouldn't be too big but I think the size of this work with the model.

DanceofSlaanesh: Very nicely done purple NMM, the base is also extremely crisp with a lovely gradient.

Modock: What can I say but wow, the speed and quality is astounding. Really love the green tones on his trousers and the pink of his mouth.

Tikay Fortooun: Love that classic model, the base really sets the whole thing off. Quite a few techmarines this month and this is another great one.

Thanks! I wasn't really feeling this theme. The model is one I made years ago and the conversion standard isn't as high as it would be now, so I didn't have much motivation to paint it, and I think it's going to show in the results. On the plus side he got painted so that's alright.

Cheers Tyranid Horde. I was reluctant to use the standard blue for the eyes as felt it would get lost in all the metallic armour so settled on yellow. Plus it ties in with the yellow detail stripes on the weapons.

Thanks Horde. I want to do some better shots. When I get a chance I will setup a better 3 light rig and post em in the Gallery. I squeezed in those shots between the madhouse my house was at the time. Son's 1st, the extended family invasion. One thing to note is that the color shift is heavily damaged by working with with a brush or a shade. It's really sensitive and I feel like I learned a lot about it this time around. The leather uses the new snakebite leather contrast as a wash, love that stuff. The bone was the new wraithbone base with the snakebite constrast then standard painting back up to almost a white and it gave the bone a mottled aged look that I've honestly never achieved before. Again, I need better shots to show it off. Thanks for the critiques. I love em. I can't improve without feedback and you guys are great.

Also like you I've been switching between a lot of "golds" trying to get something I really like, as we had in the olden days. Something is just never "quite right". I've been working with the contrasts as well to see what I can make happen. But I've got golds and layers of various metallics from Vallejo, P3, Army, Citadel (Older golds from the current line and the newer retributor, etc). Still none of them achieve what I remember and what I see in the older 2010 white dwarf magazines where you had a gold that had both depth and was.. gold. For eldrad's gold I struggled as well trying various things. I am not "super happy" about it. One of my favorite examples of a great gold is on the old .. eh.. 2010 Dark Elves Reavers, the musician horn is a good example. Its kind of a brassy gold w/o using silver highlighting and it still has a depth to it.

Right, comment time!

Nevelon - Nice pairing - I'm enjoying the Eldar vs Marines thing you've had going the last couple of months. I'm drawn towards the techmarine's axe for some reason.

Rybrook - I remember painting this guy years ago! Always liked the huge number of appendages on this model. Nice work, clean and looks just like a techmarine should.

QAR - Utterly nuts, brillaintly fitting the theme. I love it.

Jamie Shred - It's cool seeing models that I'm not familiar with. I like the eyes on the one second from right. Very menacing.

Cap'n Brown - The exorcist is a great old-school 40k model, and I like what you've done with it - especially the blue-tinted reliefs on the front and sides.

Bellerophon - My entry. It's a Warp Hunter by the way Para Again, I'm pleased with the way this one came out. Thanks for the kind words everybody.

DV8 - Absolutely stunning, all over. Every time I see it I want to praise the kimono in particular, but then it feels unfair to elevate any aspect over the rest.

Vejut - Nicely fitting the theme there - I like the gold details - they break up the silver nicely.

bantha_beast - Very characterful. I like the dark/grimy look you've got on these.

Chris56 - Brilliant kitbash, magnificent painting. I love the armour, and the skin especially.

Gulgog TufToof - Chargin forward with plenty of dakka! It's cool seeing the metal face on this fella.

feltmonkey - subtle, but brilliantly executed. You could be fooled into thinking it was a model from shooting the movies!

ZergSmasher - Nice choice of scheme, the yellow is particularly well executed and provides a nice contrast to the grey-blue.

meatybitz - A nice variation on the classic Eldrad. The runes on the edge of the cloak are great!

Jadenim - I love the purple shading. Simply, yet perfectly executed, and with those bases they go great on the game tiles.

Argive - I always love to see some wraiths. Cool work on the hex patterns on the yellow.

Paradigm - Beautiful understated scheme. I think this one has flown under the radar a bit.

Midget Gems - Love the idea - just a shame that you didn't get the chance to do the full-on conversion like you planned. Still, nice work and it looks awesome in that purple.

Maharg - Something about that flesh tone is very disturbing, so I must say that's a success!

dukeofbeer - Interesting model, and nicely done. The face works well.

Tyranid Horde - I love the eyes and the psychic effect on the end of the guy's fingers - really makes these models for me.

Power Elephant - disturbing, washed out, very fitting to the model.

DanceofSlaanesh - it's really satisfying to see you take your style and apply it to a different set of colours. The purple has come out great, and I love the expression on the guy's face. Makes me think of Ming the Merciless!

Modock - Stunning work, I'm not sure what else to say. Deserving of all the votes it's getting.

Tikay Fortuon - Classic model, the base really adds to it, and goes nicely with the wolves scheme. Good job!

Great work everybody!

Thanks Bellerophon. Strangely enough the guy with the Gatling guns eyes are my least favourite as the yellow bled to the eye socket on his left eye but not the right. I like the far right ones eyes best myself as they came out more even.
