Hi Dakka

So I'm setting up my dedicated hobby room finally.

I haven't got a desk yet so any tips on where I can find one with adjustable height one Im all ears plus backboard and paint racks send me dem links!

However my main concern at this point is setting up a good spray booth space with extractor for airbrushing.
I had a "cheap" one off amazon. I disposed of the it during the move as basically didn't really have any power... Not sure if it got clogged up but it barely worked after just one year. Only used about once every couple months for a few hour sessions.

I would like a perma set up for airbrushing so and I can probably get a desk to accommodate the space.

I would consider building my own (no confidence in skills though...) But just as easily happy to get an off the shelf one if its high quality and reasonable.

My hope would be that with regular use and a good booth I wouldn't paint dust in the room. I don't think I will. is this a thing ?
Never used an airbrush regularly.

Appreciate the collective knowledge in advance.

Probably overkill for what you are after, but a number of years ago I built 2 paint booths out of plywood. They were larger than what you probably need. But that proved to be quite useful for a large number of modelling projects. Roughly they were 24 inches square and slightly deeper and contained a plenum containing a squirrel cage fan and dryer vent housing to an outside vent. I used Furnace Filters cut in half and added a fluorescent light fixture.

Not including the fan (surplus) they probably cost around $70.00 US.

Pro: Having the ability to spray *ANY* type of paint. Not just Acrylic's.

Con: For Warhammer stuff it's probably way overkill.

Im sticking to acrylics, airbrushing primer. Probbaly will not bother with spray cans in the booth as I think tahts what ruined my cheapo extractor booth.

Im thinking about this off the shelf one:

https://bartsharpairbrush.co.uk/product/large-airbrush-spray-booth-led-lights-sb04/

Anyone knowledgeable can advise if it's powerful enough? It has adjustable airflow so if its a bit too powerful I can dial it down a bit.

I found a decent adjustable height big ass desk at IKEA today.

Amazon has the Master Airbrush booth for around $150 US. It’s decent and has an extraction fan with a window vent.

I had one like that (pretty sure its all made in the same factory in china) as it looks exactly the same as other ones.

I found the space to be a bit tight. This one is bigger.

Right so rather than making new threads Im going to update the title regarding building my hobby space.

Shopping around I have found the best option will be a 160CMx80CM adjustable height Ikea desk Pending measurements. Might end up going for a 120x 70 if its too deep as the plan is to slap on floor protector sheets, and have two desks facing each other so that I can just roll around in my chair to and from my computer desk and my painting desk. Looking forward to be able to work on minatures while standing or at leats bringing the desk up as I find sitting doen and stooping over minatures for extended period of time to put a lot of stress on the ol back..

The next thing o the list to consider is lighting. Can anyone recommend either good lighting solutions, or better still examples of how they have set up their hobby spaces so I can get some ideas?
Previously used which was standing on top of my computer tower and the ceiling light but it has a very short stem and wont be any good for what Im planning. I really like the type of light it gives though very good clarity.

Cheerios in advance.

Here is my lighting setup. IKEA striplight under the shelf, with an adjustable LED lamp on the offside and a random ikea LED spotlight for extra illumination in small areas.

Lamp brand and controls.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

My main light is a Brightech Lightview Pro. I kind of wish I'd opted for one with both brightness and temperature control for the LEDs, but I'm pretty happy with it. The magnification took some getting used to, but I think it has helped my posture.

i use this:

https://www.heamar.co.uk/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=D35600&submit_search=

it's expensive, especially when you buy a floor stand, but well worth the money imo. Note the it does come with a desk clamp so if your desk is sturdy, then you won't need the floor stand.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

a good idea is to hit up a local used business furniture place. They generally have a decent selection of desks and work table/benches for fair prices and will definitely be better than an IKEA anything.

I do not know if you can get your hands on this, but this is pretty awesome!

I am even considering getting a table to two eventhough I already have a good set up.
Usually tables with adjustable height are motorized and expensive, but not these!

Saw em at my local HomlessDespot
Husky Adjustable Height Work Bench

And I would highly recomend a outlet line mounted above the table for all powertools, dremmles, chargers, lights, lamps, tea pot, ets.
Something like this

I appreciate the comments. Some interesting ideas I think the lighting should be sorted .

So what do people use for paint racks? Im mainly using GW paint pots but slowly phasing in some vllejo, especialy for airbrushing.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wall-mounted-Paint-Rack-holds-105-pots-GW-Humbrol-army-painter-Vallejo-bottles/153878955379?hash=item23d3e68573:g:ZZcAAOSwJedefiui

Im thinking of getting one maybe two of these and slap them ont he wall plus some shelves above the desl to act as storage and lamp mounts.

Would prefer a solid single piece one and maybe non MDF. The desk one I have was a pain in the ass to build and they feel pretty flimsy.

On the advice of the Tabletop Minions youtube channel I got some cheap nail polish stands from China off of Amazon. Paid about a fiver each, plus the same again for postage. Little bit of assembly, and reasonably (though not super) sturdy, however for desk use this fitted me perfectly. Two of them fit just over 70 GW pots for less than fifteen quid. The only thing that was a bit of a pain was the delivery time, which was about two months, however that was at the height of the health crisis so that was certainly a factor. Im a student so needed a cheap solution and I think I got a lot of value by avoiding the traditional "hobby" premium for paint stands.

You could equally probably get a wall mounted spice rack, I'm having a wee browse right now and theres plenty for a pretty reasonable price.

Nail polish racks off of Amazon. Nothing fancy, but they get the job done, and come in all sorts of sizes.

I once waited for nearly 3 months for a set of modelling files from china direct so going down a local route. I think the MDF ones to go on the wall will be perfect. Not looking forward to the assembly though.

I have some cheap plastic stuff for tools etc.

I have half an army worth of eldar making their way from element that were ordered in March but haven't materialised yet, so playing the extremely patient waiting game. Do post an update on the room when you get things done, I couldn't negotiate my partner out of her "office space" so I'm stuck with a desk.

I use a 15 drawer bisley cabinet I got from my wife's work,

Only drawback is the citadel shades dont fit standing up, but it's also the same with dropper bottles.

My A1 mat and paint racks finaly came through this weekend .
Lacking decent wood/multipurpose glue tho lol.. Going to post a pic of the build so far soon, its coming along slowly.

I'm now on the look out for a seat as i more or less know what my lighting going to be. Historically I have always used a good high backed computer chair as my computer desk doubled up as a paint station...
However the desk wasn't adjustable and there was only so much you could do with the chair... I'm not sure how good that was for my back or posture. Prolonged painting session have often left me with the ol back pain. Not getting any younger and being on a 8hr desk job is not doing my posture any favours.

The desk I got now is adjustable height and although I could in theory move the computer desk chair it would mean having to adjust it and then re-adjust it back all the time so im looking to invest into a separate chair of some sort for the paint station.
I've seen some saddle style stools used at tattoo shops etc so i wonder if those could be decent. I can get the desk high enough to stand and still rest my elbows which is neat so planing on doing some standing work as well.

So im interested in what do people use for seats/chairs at their paint stations?
Anyone work standing up?
Anyone got hacks to share for keeping the posture healthy or products that can help?

Thanks in advance.

Back problems are real man!
I could not find good posture for painting, it just doesn't work. So I compensate by having good posture at work, and do exserises whenever I can. So far back does not bother me!
My chair is old office chair, so its crap.
2 things that, I think, helped alot for sitting is getting lower back support like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IJNJAZ0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and a cussion

So the cussion I have saved up for, and gave it a try, and damn it friking works, no more tiered butt.
Its that purple latex seat cussions. https://purple.com/seat-cushions
The horrible toxic latex smell out of the box will be barely blunted by the fabric cover, but will disapear overtime.

I got these2 lights for both sides.
I can adjust temperature, birghtness, and tilt and rotate the elbo, works good so far.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M86J4MY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Dont know how I got by without good lights before...

Thanks. That's the plan! Need to go pick it up tomorrow.
I keep forgetting to change my delivery address so amazon parcels keep piling up at my parents address lol.

The next thing is a shelf or two, paint racks and a spray booth/extractor and then maybe a new chair/stool.

Looks spacious! Not sure if it's practical but if you have a window on the opposite wall it might be worth getting a decent sized wall mounted mirror? No substitute for natural light.

The window is south west facing and is right next to the desk. With lamps on top I'm confident will get good lighting finally.

I'm still considering if I should invest in some sort of stool/chair but cant seem to find anything.

If you're an old fart like me, or even a middling fart, I couldn't recommend investing in a decent chair enough. UK has quite a few refurbished office suppliers. You can get a solid chair at a fair discount. I'd advise to avoid "gaming chairs" in favour of something that will look after your back. I say this as a guy in my thirties, the state of my back depresses me.

There's 700 quid herman miller chairs here for about 150 quid. If you plan on spending 10+ hours a week here, it's definitely worth considering

I had back problems at work. Got my company to raise my desk by 100mm. Back problem solved. The problem is that humans have got taller over the decades and many bits of furniture are sized to average humans from the 1950's.
