A simple question. How many models do you have?
Let's say 28mm and the equivalent.
Bases of 6-20mm should equal 1 28mm.
Cavalry 2, and vehicles are probably 5 for smaller ones and 10 for larger ones.
54mm should be equal to 2.
To start, I have several ancient armies in 28mm for Greeks, Macedonians, Early Romans, Republican Romans, Etruscans, and Archamenid Persians. I also have a large group of Gladiators, Gangsters, Supers, Blood Bowl teams, and Heroquest figures. I also have three 40K armies, but they are from 2nd-4th edition so smaller armies, several Necromunda gangs, and a few Kill Teams. Non-28mm I have an American and Martian army for All Quiet on the Martian front, Egyptians, Hittites, Diadochi, and an Imperial 40K force.
Therefore, I probably have about 1,500 - 2,500 miniatures using the system I laid out above.
So, how about you?

10? thousand. I have crates of 6mm and loads of 28mm. Need to get rid of most of it as I simply don't have the time anymore to finish grand projects.

Painted? Using those metrics?
I’ve got enough to make the math hard. And enough dead systems tucked away to make thinking about it difficult.
Probably in the 2.5k to 4,000 range.

4040 of which 4024 are painted but I don't track base size so those numbers are definitely a thousand or three higher.

I'm not going to bother with your "equivalents".
Unless it's multi-figure bases of infantry or weapons + crews for 6mm -15mm stuff? It's 1 model = 1 model.
The answer is many thousands. Times about 5 if you count all the 6-15mm stuff. Times an even larger # if you count each individual 6 - 15mm infantry man.
The technical term is: A LOT

Even attempting to count would be far too much of a hassle to do.
Best guess is probably 2000+. Just my Empire army is probably 500 models and I have 8 Fantasy armies and that's not including two kickstarters worth of Bones minis I've barely scratched the surface on...also random 40k models, Warmachine and Lord of the Rings minis.

I'd guess roughly 2000? Six large army collections of a few hundred each. I don't really want to think about it. . .

Somewhere around 3 hundred maybe...but I try to keep my collection relatively lean and usually sell those I don't need anymore. For example for a game I leave and have no intention of coming back to - 7 WH40K and 4 WFB armies went that way - or an army I have already played enough, or if I think I have too many forces for a game and time devoted to each gets dilluted too much (I sold half of my Kill Teams last year, even though I play KT actively).
My aim is to have experiences not objects. So off they go when they become just clutter (physical or mental).

10,000+?
Don't actually know. More than I need.
Every 40k army except sisters & grey knights.
Nids biggest at 2000 or so models.
Marines probably 1000 - 1500
Necrons, Dark Eldar and Orks 500 - 750
Dwarfs 2-300?
Orcs 400 - 500?
Dark Elves 300
Other fantasy 2000? Other AOS 500?
Flames of War 200?
Napoleonics 400?
Dark ages 200?
Zombies 100
Others 100 - 300?

Somewhere between 5000 and ohhh gods that’s too many!
If I added my D&D in its significant more.
I like zombies games and hordes a lot so it makes for huge army of minis even for small games.

Back when I started 20 years ago I would count them about once per year, but at some point I stopped.
My guess is 1000 painted, I'm not counting unbuilt or unpainted stuff, just what is ready to see games.
Mordor: 150
Moria: 100
Easterlings+ Allies: 150
Elves: 30
Death Guard: 150
Daemons: 100
Orks: 200
Aliens: 70
Various stuff(Klingons, Romulans, Colonial Marines etc.): 30
Starships: 60
Some of these numbers could be way off. I could probably look through various battlescribe lists for a more accurate number.

I used to keep total collection lists in battlescribe, but with edition changes and software updates they were a PITA to keep up to date long term. Plus only covered the games they had rules for, and official units. Although I would round up odd heavy weapons from the swap shelf into dev squads and tricks like that.
Still didn’t help with the old Grenadier D&D minis and stuff like that. I don’t think they have ever been part of a formal census.

Including unbuilt, I estimate it at about 6000. Almost everything is 28mm scale, a tiny amount of 6mm and "fleet scale" stuff (BFG/Uncharted Seas).
I've been collecting for 30 years and very rarely sold much on, but it's still a pretty oversized collection! It's about 2000 Sci Fi and 4000 Fantasy or Historical figures. The Sci Fi is almost all 40K whereas the Fantasy is spread across WFB, LOTR, Hordes and misc fantasy.
It's just over half painted, though I might go back and touch up some of the older stuff at some stage (I've been in the process of doing that with roughly 300 old warhammer 40k models from the collections of myself, my older brother and a school friend who left the hobby decades ago, but I could easily add another 300 to that from my Orks).

Time does make things seem more reasonable.
Like I have over 500 Ultramarines. It’s a stupid unreasonable amount. But its an army I’ve been working on for over 3 decades. Slowly adding things, updateing old units, etc. never selling or towing stuff out. Works out to roughly adding 15 minis a year. That doesn’t sound too bad, now does it?
These days I generally paint around 75-100 minis a year. Depends on what projects are underway. It’s been higher in the past when I had less things competing for my time, and lower at others. But I’ve been painting minis since the mid ‘80’s. Four decades of slowly adding to the pile. Almost never selling/trashing stuff.
Makes for a lot of minis.

I have 845 painted 28mm amongst collections big enough I have track them.
I have 1382 recorded unpainted minis in those collections. This is rather high because I panic bought like 500 Samurai miniatures after one range I'd been sleeping on went out of production. Usually I'm about 50/50 on painted/unpainted.
There are a bunch of painted skirmish gangs lying around from stuff like Frostgrave and Batman, I didn't record. Same with unpainted ones. Then there is stuff I don't intend to paint and have been too lazy to ditch like SM half of 40k boxed sets. I also have a very large collection of 15mm historicals.
I've been painting and hoarding since 2000 with some very large gaps, most have been painted since 2014.

Enough that it'll be a significant problem for my next of kin if I died or dissapeared suddenly. Probably around a thousand fully painted minis, at LEAST that much in half painted minis as I bounce between projects. Maybe triple that in unassembled stuff I grabbed on a lark. Gamer ADHD is a helluva thing.
Wargaming is fun, but I've discovered that my actual favorite hobby is "prepping multiple factions for a game system I probably won't even ever play".

Yeah, similar to that I'm usually building up armies to be playable in apocalypse versions of the game (or War of the Ring), but noone really wants to play these large battles with me - or we don’t really have the time for that anymore. But I still like to work out the occasional apocalypse/ wotr list made from my painted minis.
For my lotr minis at least we started Oathmark as a mass battle system.

I'm terrible for that sort of thing too - I always have grand plans about what I'm going to do and I get really excited about them but I think realistically many are unlikely to happen.
My other problem is I genuinely think almost all the common classic fantasy tropes are just really cool, and at some point or another I've grabbed stuff for all of them. And I like pretty much every faction in 40K bar probably Craftworld Eldar (who I'm just neutral on). I try to make sure everything gets played with but I do have an entire fully painted Undead army that has moved country with me and is about 13 years old that has never seen the table!

I decided to bend that impulse into something more productive and used it to support a culture of a variety of games in the community. If it peaks my interest and isn't too crazy of a project, I'll pick it up, maybe even a second force and play with anyone interested. It's made it so people are a lot more willing to get hyped about different games and we have a dozen or so systems that see regular play now.

I think this is why both Battletech and MCP does so well here, on game days we have plenty of kids and adults come in after seeing they can play expecting board games. And can just be given a team to pilot and learn easy to give a go.

Let's see. Horus Heresy: 124 models, ranging from Spartan-size to infantry. 10 knights, four bigs, six smalls. 117 40k Primaris, again ranging from a RepEx to infantry. Then 95 Tyranids and 127 Chaos Daemons, small and big. And a handful of miscellaneous stuff. All this is just what's painted obviously. All in all, 493 models since returning to the hobby in Jan 2021.

I vaguely remember the days when I could rattle off the exact #s of models i owned.
It was back in the mid/late 80s .
It was 50some D&D figures (you know, everyone's mix of x skeletons, x goblins, x orcs, a bunch of singles for things you never fought more than 1 of at a time, a Grenadier dragon of each color, and several of each character race/type) + 3 of each Mech available at the time for BattleTech.
Oh, and a couple of Star Trek ships for Star Fleet Battles.
I do not count the Hot Wheels we used for Car Wars.
And then I started playing WHFB & those days ended.

Checking just what I have in collections in the Brushrage app, somewhere north of 8,000. Breaking it down further: Masters of the Universe 262 I got everything in the Gamefound campaign, and the number reflects all the pieces of terrain as well as the characters. Age of Sigmar 1669 split between many armies: Stormcast 192 Slaves to Darkness 117 Soulblight Gravelords 415 Nighthaunts 147 Khorne Bloodbound ???probably at least 100 models, oddly they aren't in the app SAGA 217 across 5 army lists Vikings, Normans/Crusaders, Anglo-Saxons, Late Romans Marvel Crisis Protocol 159 counting all the 3d printed proxies, heavy on X-Men. I think I have 8 Wolverine/Logan variants and 4 Deadpools. 40k 2345 split across 13 armies Space Marines and Chaos Marines accounting for over 1,000 of them. Over 200 are Crimson Fists. Star Wars Legion 688 split across all factions but the Clone Army & my Wookiees are the bulk of them. Plus all the small/dead games like Wrath of Kings, Dark Age, Bolt Action, Wild West Exodus.

Your system is a bit fiddly for me to really bother with counting it up like that as I've never kept a strict record, like I have thousands of 6mm models but I have everything done from huge multi-bases for fantasy clashes, to individually based figures for skirmish games. Counting them for equivalents to 28mm is just difficult as I have so many.
But at my last count I was just under 10,000 miniatures and that was during the middle of covid lockdowns when I did a reshuffle. I'd estimate I'm at around 20,000 now, or will be by the end of this year. (20% off weekend at victrix are dangerous)
- I've now collected I'd say about 80% of the GW lord of the rings models, which includes a huge amount of duplicates for a lot of the range. I'm at the point I'm collecting oddities, rarities, and some forgeworld stuff left to go. There is a few of what I'd call the 'standard' range I'm missing, but I'm slowly working my way though grabbing 2-3 units of everything most weeks/months.
- I also have a huge collection of non-movie 'book' related stuff I've sourced from other companies.
- I have good size army of every Epic 40k army other than Tau. Huge volume of alternative miniatures from other companies which filled the void when GW abandoned the scale. About 2 of every legions imperialis release.
- I have fairly good sized army for almost all warhammer fantasy armies.
- An eclectic mix of AoS boxsets, all for gaming AoS Skirmish. So like warcy, start collecting forces, character sets etc.
- About 2k each of 40k Orks, Emperors Children, Chaos Knights, Death guard.
- A few other games that can probably all fit in one or two boxes. Judge Dredd + related 2000ad games, Most of the current run of Hero Quest, most of the Stargrave releases, just getting into argatoria.
