It's beautiful! You've really nailed the technique if you ask me, will be giving this a go when i get a chance. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Haha, well the jester looks great already! Careful with the highlights, he looks so intense right now so try not to soften it too much in my opinion.

That Ranger is one of GWs timeless sculpts, truly wonderful and i know you'll do it justice, you've made a nice start!

Wow Finnan, that cloak is simply amazing to look at, the colour choices are incredible and it has a nice 'oil on water' feel to it very nicely done and even at that stage I could stare at it for hours!..... that will be one spectacular model when you've finished it mate! well done as usual!

Maybe try using a long exposure time or getting a light-box for the pictures? That should help delicate effects like this one be more visible on pictures, I think. Lovely magpie look you've got going there, really special .

Lightbox would probably help - I'll have to 'borrow' one from work ; )
The better shots were with natural light, it picked the colours up much better. The flashmade it too shiny too... I freely admit that I'm not the world's best photographer!

I really enjoy this blog, because you can really see how much time and concentration you invest into your models. I wish I was able to do that on a regular basis. Your blending and your color choices are superb!

... so I'm seeing a pattern forming: periods of fairly intense painting followed by a time of nothing at all from me lol Even I recognise that I need to a bit more regular with my postings, so apologies for that.

It's half term, so with any luck I should be able to get some decent painting done. Not a whole lot done in the last week or so as I've been absolutely shattered from work. I know I always say that, but it does take its toll.

So, what's on the workbench?
Foolishly I've started Irillyth (and some Spectres), and in my head, this is going to be my 40k squad entry, but I'm already wondering if I'll have time to do them all (to the standard I want) in time. They're beautiful models, but damn they're tricky to paint! I think I'd rather take my time on all of them and have something I'm happy with than rush to get them done for Golden Demon (still haven't bought my Games Day ticket yet... ). I have three entries already: The Farseer, the Wraithseer, and my finished Cirdan, so it's not as if I won't be flying the flag.
The plan is to have his armour white - you can see that I've made a start on his foot. His sashes/ribbons I want to be white as well, but a different white lol. The gold is so I can have some gold bands/stripes along the bottom to tie them into my craftworld scheme. I need to go in and retouch the gold on his shoulders and chest. He's going to be a bit of a mission! I also learned my lesson with the Farseer and the Autarch and I'm painting him unassembled - there'd be no way I could get into all those nooks and crannies if I'd fully assembled him.

Next up: the Autarch. A little bit of work on him this morning to get me warmed up. I've just started on his armour, so a long way to go yet, and I spotted some bits that need retouching (already!!).

Finally, the Ranger. I did this a few days ago actually, but couldn't get decent shots of it. His coat's done (looks better in the flesh, you can see the darker tones more clearly), his loincloth is done and I've made a start on his robe. Again, I can see a couple of spots where I want to go and smooth things out a bit.
I've also started his armour - that's just Mephiston Red over the Charadon base, and it's a bit brighter than usual, which I like. I put a glaze of Bloodletter in the bottom centre part just to see what would happen and it's made it go a bit shiny, so I'll go and knock that back with some more Mephiston later.
I was having my doubts about the Ranger, but now I have a bit more energy in me, I'm liking him again - he does look a bit flat at the moment due to all the black/Charadon. Hopefully that'll go when I get more areas done.

enjoy : )

A bit of work done on Irillyth - slowly working my way up his legs. I'm liking how he's going so far, although the tricky thing with white is that you can never quite tell when you've gotten to WHITE, so it can be quite slow, especially on the smaller areas, but I'll get there : )

@DijnsK - the Ranger is part of the Inquisition range form GW, you should be able to find him in the Specialist Games section of their website. Irillyth is from Forgeworld.

@Hang - the triangles I did another horizontal line and then did Vs going up... horrendously explained there... yeah, just freehand basically and lots of judging distance!

only a little update really as I've spent most of the day watching the Glee Project... yes, I know, my Have A Life Factor was fairly low to start off with and basically plummeted with that admission, but what the hell ; )

Irillyth's three main sashes tidied up and basecoated ready to be highlighted up to white. This is my new favourite: Skink Blue. I needed to retouch some of the gold, so I'll have to carefully do some washes to deepen the colour.
After doing the triangles on the front sash, I didn't really want to do them on the other two as I think it would have been a bit too much, but it looked a bit odd with them, and I was tempted to paint them out, but after a bit of thought I decided to do more instead, so a swift rendition of the Shadow Spectres icon was added, and I'm liking it : ) I'm kind of tempted to do some more patterning above the icon, but I think this is a good time to stop, just in case I cock it up! (I can also see where I need to go and tidy up the triangles a bit too)

Main sashes pretty much done, although I might go and add more white later on. I also need to finish highlighting the gold.
(it's also going to look much stronger once I'm finished with him and get the rock painted nice and dark to contrast with all the light on him)

It's an Autarch day today.
The vast majority of the red done (bar the banner poles... one of which fell off after I dropped him. oops), and the armour further highlighted. I'm fed up of red now lol
Ingredients: base red = Scab Red
second highlight = Mephiston:Blood Red 1:1
third highlight = Blazing Orange

Another Autarch day - I want to get this bad boy done, and I'm almost there. Just finishing off bits and pieces left to do and then the base : )
Still a fair bit of tidying up to do, even at this stage...

Subscribed and Exalted!!! Really beautiful orange on the autarch, absolutely mouth-watering. And the blue eyes too. And the armour on the Exarch. Argg!!! its all so good!!! As a tip I think you should make the gold on the Exarch's cape a little more coherent, as it really stands out and looks a bit odd but that might be the desired effect. Give me more awesomely-painted models!!!

that cloak is tricky on the Autarch - because the folds are quite deep, there's more orange left, especially when compared to the Farseer, which is a lot yellower because it's flatter... just one f those things I think. I certainly need to beef up the gold bits on his gun and sword though, but that's one of the things on my to do list : )
Thank you for the kind words : )
