I'm always surprised when people say they never play, when 8th drops you won't be at much of a disadvantage as no one else will know what's going on either!

Some nice changes still coming out with Characters unable to join units. In my last game against MLCS's Tau he had a Buff Commander standing in front of his Broadsides giving them 'ignores cover' and able to soak up about 12 Lascannon shots on average (4 wounds, 2+ save, 4+ Invun) and at T5 he's not able to be instakilled (bar Str10) so basically there's no point shooting that unit. This is the sort of thing I look forward to not having to deal with ever.

Old man Yarric is looking good.

I’ve got a good feeling about 8th. Not letting characters join units should cut down on some of the shenanigans. The character driven deathstars were not a type of gameplay I enjoyed.

I’m sure there will be parts of the new system I dislike, and parts I like. Some things will be broken, others fixed. Just like every other edition change.

But still, we march for Macragge!

COURAGE AND HONOUR!

DEATH TO THE FOLLOWERS OF THE CORPSE GOD!

No wait..

One thing I'm a bit nervous about is the seeming new faction of Stormcast tm Marines, might relegate actual marines to the same place 'Empire' now hold in AoS (ie dead), whilst all the love goes on BIG MAREENZ. We shall see. IG should be ok though!

More on this dude. Moar dark washes, in general and on his dress. Still looks crap and shiny.

Areas are being re basecoated and then washed with Argax and Reikland as well as some OG brown ink from yonks ago. The white areas are shaded and highlighted.

Redoing the gold and face areas over the top of the washes, layering with the basecoat and one tone up.

Highlighting all the metal areas (bar claw which I leaving till last as I'm still not 100% about it's scheme), burnished (possibly shining) gold and Vallejo Mitheral Silver equivalent mixed to do the gold areas and Boltgun and Mitheral again on the steel areas. Brass gorget thing is done too. Face gets a Bleached bone layer.

Beginning to do the yellow and red areas here..

Finally borrowed an Abbaddon Black off MLCS and redid his dress, simple 3-4 layer line highlight using shadow and fortress greys mixed with black. Much better. Reapplied thinned washes to face and some areas of the gold..gave the mouth a very watered down scab red wash to hint at lips..

I considered respraying him at one point as it didn't seem like it was coming together, I think he's starting to now, redoing the black helped a lot, feth you Vallejo. I maybe should have done a bit more practice before jumping in on a big project like this guy, feeling rusty..

More soon!

Thanks dude. Glad you like him. He's starting to look ok now after a shaky start..

Worked on the face, further highlights, teeth added and I did a minor bit of dentistry as the slightly toothless mouth is a bit 'unsettling' to me, wash of super thin scab red on the inside of mouth and to form lips...the cap brim got a highlight too..

The yellow received a thinned wash of Argax to add contrast and the leather areas (strap and holster) got started with a highlight of Scorched brown mixed with increasing amounts of Bleached Bone.

Added a lighter few layers to the yellow and tidied up the white areas too..He's starting to get near done finally, been a bit of a slog. The Claw area is still undone but I think I'm just going to leave it black and add highlights and chipping. It will draw less attention to it's comedy size.

Right more later.

Nice. You should paint the claw a bright lobster red. Ahh, for the good old days when claws were actual claws.

On second thought, let’s not go there. ’Tis a silly place.

It's only a model..

I think the classic paint scheme for him is a Mike McVey job, amazing painting, finds detail I couldn't see when painting him but it's right in the 'Red Period' or the 'Age of Strife' as I like to call it. So there's lots of red, including aforementioned lobster claw. The previous model is pretty amazing too (old Jes Goodwin sculpt), that really is an actual claw..

Yep he's a doozy. I was leaving it till last too, done the other 180 though. Still have 3 other infantry left to do actually, 2 Assassins and a solitary Ratling, who is slated to be the 'end' of the IG.

Ah old Bumtouch (not so cute with that power claw) scourge of the planet Cottagin XXX, the Universe is safer place without him. I like that idea, not sure which areas would look right to be done with checks. I have finished the pincer (pics in gallery) I'm still behind with the coverage but can consider going over the claw again. Here's a pic from the future. *wibbly music*

This is the claw highlighted and chipped a bit. What bit do you think?

Perhaps the three sides per claw on the non working edges that are currently metallic. There's a bit too much silver there at the moment in my eyes.
Basically anything but the blade if that makes sense...Outside blade and backside blade could be painted..... https://www.senseishears.com//media/wysiwyg/Shear_Education/diagram.jpg
Not sure if two rows is enough and or whether the centre line should curve or if the grid should just be laid flat? Food for thought either way.
Seeing as I'm an expert in computerness I've created a virtual reality experience for you to engage with.....

nifty paintjob though

Oh right check on the blades, hadn't thought of that, bit concerned it might get messy going round corners like that but then that's quite orky, it does look good on your space virtual reality magic. But the lower blade would be a massive bellend to do. Might try just doing the top shear and see what happens.

Sheer faith in the Emprah. Yes it is daft and one reason I don't want to paint it bright red and just draw attention to it! Thanks, the painting is staring to come along now.

Yeah, the bottom or middle blade looks messy on my pic and I think it'd look a bit odd as you won't be able to read the plains properly. Perhaps treat each blade slightly differently dags would be easier to paint on the hard to reach bits and maybe the middle shear could be a tastefully wear her dark red as a bod to the good old days. Perhaps convert the checks into dags as you change plains.
I'm sure that it would be a bitch to get right around the corners but I've not seen his claw done like it before and I'm sure you're man enough!

If you cock it up, which you won't, I can't recommend isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud highly enough.
An area like that would be pretty simple to strip a layer or two of paint off without ducking the entire model.

Isopropyl alcohol? Is that what we were mixing with that Skittles milkshake and Ribena?

I won't get a chance tonight to paint but maybe tomoz I can have a crack at it. Your right I've not seen it done and I think it could be quite interesting provided it doesn't just get too messy.

Yeah it's pretty much the same.
I buy it in litres for stripping and general houaehold/diy usage but it's great stuff for removing fresh paint. A gentle rub on a cotton bud will remove paint from an aborted session or the last 24hrs leaving the underlying paint as it was. I'll decant a jar or pot for you and see how you get on.

Seeing as we're here..

More tinkering in general, the leather areas have had a final layer of pure Bleached Bone and then been stained with multiple applications of Reikland...

Here is the highlighting on the Claw starting..

Claw highligted..

Pic from above showing the chipping..not very clearly really..

There's a bit more I've got done, mostly basing stuff will post it soon. Hope you like, been a long journey to get him this far. More soon.

Here's a quick bit more 'Old Man' action...

Phrasing?

Starting on his base, added some sand areas and re painted the rock Shadow Grey..

I did a 2 layer drybrush with Codex and Fortress greys and then drybrushed the soil with Graveyard. I will add some tufts and static grass too..

So bowing to peer pressure I've started ruining my otherwise pretty complete model with this nonsense..

More on that next time!

Challenge you say? I hate them, then I have to try.

Tiny checks! I think going 'round the corner' went ok too.

The main blades got done on one side each and the backs..

The small middle blade can piss off..

Raahhh massive pincer!

Dangerously close to being finished now..just the weathering on the checks and some tinkering with the face and base...

I think they're looking good, will be better once washed and chipped. Hope you're happy Alex.

Moar soon!

Thanks, I will read it. I tend to only do background shots when I'm done. I do WiP shots a lot so I can't be bothered to keep setting up a backdrop, I do use a blue graduating into white ATM and will try a simple white one and see how it looks.

Your auto-focus was picking out the paint bottle. Try a plain sheet of paper about 2-3 inches behind the model and a light in front of it, might help.

Anyhoo after several years and a few unavoidable deaths Yarrick has crawled bloodily to the done pile. Here are pics so it did happen.

I'm gonna fist you up...

More of same..

I tilted him backwards a bit with the basing so that, to me, he looks like he is exhorting him men forward, rather than reaching for a remote.

Glad how he's turned out. Pleased with his look, the checks do seem pretty original, so I'm glad I had that idea.

Hope you likee, getting perilously close to 'finished' with the IG. Next up 2 Assassins to complete the formation I can use for maybe another 3 weeks.
