The Adeptus Olandicus 40k Gaming Club of the Orlando area had it's first organized Gladiator Tournament at Sci-Fi City this weekend in Orlando, FL. While 4 people were no-shows for the tournament, turn out was great and we had some great players come out and support the clubs first major organized tournament. Prizes were all Forgeworld items and the winners got to take home some custom plaques made by the blokes at Gale Force 9. They sported the Club's logo and turned out great. Special thanks goes out to GF9 for making great plaques. Anyhoo, here are the pictures throughout the day and also the winners.

The winners were:

Overall: Gareth Hunt - Word Bearers

Second: Matt Steerman - IG armored battle group

Third: Luis Montanez - Eldar

Thanks to the winners and all the participants that helped make this event a huge success.

Great pictures. How many players, how many points? What was the Word bearers list like?

10 people showed up, so the turnout wasn't huge, but it was set up for only a maximum of 16. 2000 points, and we used the adepticon tournament FAQ, as this was modeled after their gladiator.
The word bearers list was roughy...

Lord on Bike with a lot of daemon gear
10 man terminator chosen squad with a lieutenant
3x7 daemonettes
10 blood letters
6 mounted daemonettes
2x10 furies

The army belongs to another dakka member (though he only has like 10 posts) whitedevil, and he'll probably show up and elaborate on the wargear. I played against it with my lysander wing in round 3, and it was going back and forth up until turn 4 and 5, at that point I didn't pass a single invulderable save (out of around 20 saves) and lost 2 full squads of terminators and the remnants of another. Through some careful movement, I had gotten a speeder to a point where he couldn't kill it and where it was making it a draw by holding objectives. But, of course my drawback made it go to turn 7 and I ended up losing.

Yea! Theres pictures of my imperial fists on the intraweb. Those scouts got charged by those furies (the harpy models) and survived for 2 rounds of combat and killed like 5 of the furies (it's in one of the pictures)

Actually if I remember correctly you still made a good amount of invulnerables... But the sheer amount you were forced to make in the face of 10 bloodletters spelled the doom for said 2 terminator squads. There was no way (statistically) they could have lived...

I don't really want to go into that whole thing with that speeder (the only thing you had left on the board) claiming objectives to force a draw just because I had 1 guy out of a squad of 10 whose entire base wasen't within 6" of a piece of terrain...

But it doesn't matter anyway. With absolutley nothing left on the board the game was over. Still, it was fun having our termies face off.

I had great fun, loads of competition, and I can't wait for the next one!

Gimp Master, like CaptK said, we where highly impressed that you came down from Jacksonville to attend our tournament. (For those of you who don't know that is about a three hour drive. Besides anybody who brings a Bio-titan gets my vote)

Now that I have had a chance to rest from my hellish week leading up to the tournament, I am going to give my report. Myself and Captk where the officials of the tournament, so I figured it would be good to see things from that perspective (how often do you get that).

Our primary goal of this tournament was to not give anybody the easy win, we wanted the running for first place to be as close as possible and for the most part we succeeded.

Round One we paired off people based on their skill level. Now I understand the point of random pairings, but we felt it wouldn't be fair to lower end players to get knocked out of the running too early in the event and have to be playing consistantly down. Besides, like I said before, there would be no easy wins. The number one table went to Lazurus and White Devil, mainly because they are to of the top players in this area and they have never fought in a tournament against each other before. Though Lazaurus was beaten (it was all objectives really, if Victory Points where involved it would have been a different story). Don't count Lazarus out thought, he was able to fight back from that loss and tied for third when it was all said and done. Me_Person's Lysander Wing tied. Stearman face off against GimpMaster's Tyranid monstrosity list, which I think they tied (not sure).

Round Two, we went with the Swiss System. Gareth faced of against Josh (GimpMasters friend he came from Jacksonville with), they both played similar lists, but Gareth pulled out a win. The Lysander wing won this game bringing Me_Person into contention for the big win. This round was interesting as all sorts of statistcal anamolies. Me_Person lost 4 Terminators to a Submunition round. Another person made 5, 5+ invulnerable saves, an autocannon took out a Thuderhammer in one shot. Stuff like that.

Round Three paired Me_Person with Gareth, which was Me_Person's only hope for the big win. We secretly hope that they both would draw so it became anybody's game at that point but Gareth Masacred that Lysander Wing. Me_Person learned not to try and beat a Deamon-bomd in assaut with a Lysander Wing. The surprising game came from Stearmen's massacre of Joshes Siren Deamonbomb. An Armored Company with Mystics is the rock to the scissors of a Deamonbomb. Josh called it after turn three and the two of them played a second game which Stearman won yet again.

Round 4 came down to Stearman versus Gareth, with the rest trying to get third. Gareth had a hard time handling an Armored Company and they both drew. However because Gareth had such a lead from the full battle points from the three previous games, he pulled the win.

Here are the standings from Memory, with the armies played.

First Place - Gareth with a Deamonbomb Army

Second Place - Stearman with an Armored Company (from IA that included a Baneblade)

Third Place - Luiz with an Wraithgaurd Heavy Eldar List

Fourth Place - Lazarus with a Mech. Eldar list (Snakes on a plane(Falcon) style)

Fifth - Me_Person with a Lysander Wing

Sixth through Ninth I can't remember.

Tenth - Lisa with a Drop Pod Marine Armie supported by a Thunder Hawk drop ship.

The other armies who placed 6th through 9 where:

Gimpmaster with Nidzilla list (Heavy support was a Bio-titan and a Trygon)

Josh with a Siren Deamonbomb

A Tau Player

A Dark Angels Player

Overall, it was a huge sucess and I would like to thank Sci-Fi City for hosting the event and all the players who participated. In the future we are scheduling a Campaign for January and Februrary, and we just might have an Adepticon Style 2-man Team Tournament, so you can start planning for that. PM me if you have any questions.

Peace.

At first I wasn't too happy with non random pairings (Pretty sure Garreth wasn't either) but I really was looking forward to playing him. The only problem I had was the actual mission of which I had practically no chance of winning at all when compared to his particular list. I think deliberate parrings are ok as long as the mission is randomly determined. Overall though it was still a great time....I really enjoyed myself by havinga great time.

Though Lazaurus was beaten (it was all objectives really, if Victory Points where involved it would have been a different story).

With no VP's being used it makes my VP denial list sort of ineffective. (lol) Garreth did the right thnigs and kept that in mind for that game. My hat is off to him for the win....I only take consolence in the fact I killed waay more of his stuff then he killed of mine.

Also, I could't help but become giddy with the thoughts of how the new codex would have made the games I played on saturday be very different. When Garreth shot my falcon down with an immobilized result on turn 6 I'd still have it fully operational with all dragons....wow. (I can't wait for the dex!) lol

I also can only imagine what a prism would have done to all the stuff bunched on top of the objective...mmmmm.

Don't count Lazarus out thought, he was able to fight back from that loss and tied for third when it was all said and done

I was really happy to see Luis win the tie breaker for third by the way. He's a good guy and I don't mind since I helped him with the list. (lol

Another person made 5, 5+ invulnerable saves, an autocannon took out a Thuderhammer in one shot. Stuff like that.

5 wounds from firedragons onto steve's terminators and he makes all 5 invulnerable (5+) saves. The real story of our game was the insane ammount of fire his librarian & chaplin soaked up. i think his chaplain made like 10 or more 4++ saves! Knocking a Thunder hawk down with a single autocannon takes the cake though. (lol)

In the future we are scheduling a Campaign for January and Februrary,

I'm interested in the rules / background for this....

we just might have an Adepticon Style 2-man Team Tournament,

It would be good practice for Adepticon!

Lazarus.

I understand your feeling, its one of those damned if you do damned if you don't situations. In this case we decided it was better to rule in the favor of the newer players. It wasn't perfect (Josh steamrolled over Lisa in the first game) but it kept things interesting and worked out for the best this time around.

HAH i knew there was some sort of reasoning to me facing off to a baneblade in the first round...i just had a feeling i'd be facing it right off the bat...

hah and by the way i was 6th place too bad victory points had nothing to do with winning

Me_Person's Lysander Wing tied

Actually I won that game, I just didn't get all three objectives. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn't activate that damn dooms day device so I didn't get the secondary. But I got the primary (holding the doomsday device) and tertiary (killing his most expensive unit).

Game 1 against Steve- dark angels-16 points win

Game Two against John- Mech Tau-21 points win

Game 3 against Gareth- Daemon Bomb- 1 point loss

Game 4 against James (lazarus)- 3 points draw, neither of us got any objectives

So I went 2-1-1 All Four games were against skilled opponents with competetive armies, so overall I had a very fun time.

I got a game in against Steerman after the tournament, lysander wing against his armoured battle group (not armoured company, he used the optional list from IA1), it took only 75 minutes to complete. The baneblade alone acounted for 3 terminator squads (I couldn't pass a save, either kind, to save my life... err.. my terminator's lives). I ended up killing every single vehicle he had till only Macharius was left hiding behing a wall, while my full Librarium command squad and one other terminator squad survived.

I was the DA player. I came out to cheer on White Devil! White Devil is fearsome in a very evil and bad way and we are having to institute new levels of utterly sheer madness to restrain him.

Orlando - Chicago - and back again

This was the 1st time that I've placed in a Tournament, and had lots of fun with my Imperial Guard Armoured Battlegroup... but I do have to say my greatest achievement of the day falls to , killing an undamaged Thunderhawk Transport, with a single autocannon shell from a BS3 Salamander.
