Hide them away a bit.
when you are building something made of about half a million bricks, just lighting is great but the chances of a creeper showing up isn't a question of if, its a question of when.
By building hidden away spawn areas the mobs that /do/ spawn, are safe and sound inside walls and floors rather than hiding in some corner somewhere.
I'd trade a single chest full of gold blocks to make the biome this thing sits on a mooshroomer so there was never a chance of mobs, but cant win them all :(

So ladies and gents, I've finished my oh so shiny and impressive arena. And I was wondering if anyone fancy'd taking part in an inauguration ceremony for it, in the form of a PvP tournament.
Rules are being made up as I go along, but will roughly be as follows:
Same weapons and armour- gotta be a fair fight and all- at the moment I'm thinking iron gear.
No enchantments or special food- again same as above.
And you've got to have a full food bar- to ensure your health doesn't start dropping half way through the fight.
Of course depending on the popularity of this/ special requests there may be special events/ different classes to enter in etc.
So if your interested Pm me and i'll sign you up and get working on a start time for it that's good for everyone.
Co-ords are: X: -1145 and Z: -411.
Also Prizes!

wait, do mobs not spawn i mushroom areas? why is that?
Tripwires sounds good, I can use it for non-traps as well as traps.
Level thirty cap for enchanting is GREAT!
And of course, the jungle stuff is awesome.

Bows will probably be in the special round, or I may have to build something else as I think the arena is a bit small for shooting at each other. (Not that it's small for PvP)

DS:90-S++G+++M++B++I+Plotr06#+D+++A++++/eWD251R+++T(Ot)DM+ JB: I like the concept of a free Shrike roaming through the treetops of the jungle. I'm not sure that I like the idea of a real Shrike sitting on my couch eating my Skittles. corpsesarefun: Thank god I missed be nice to shrike day. greenskin lynn: because of all the skittles and soda, you basically live off sugar water, like some sort of freakish human-hummingbird hybrid.

I'm still not entirely sure how it works... Care to explain, anyone?

Well they spawn up high get pushed by a piston (I assume so, that or they just fall) and they fall so far down they're left with just a tiny bit of health. Which can be punched.
You flip the lever and the floor goes down, and then they auto-die and you can just get the loot easy.
In short they're one block from their death when they fall.
I'm amazed it works on SMP! My Zombie Grinder should work the same way (it's the proper distance) but only 1 in 4 or 5 actually survive, or have low enough health.

You can probably set up a chain though using inverters.

Hook, 17 blocks of string, hook, block, RS inverter, block, hook, string, hook, block, etc.
Stuff like that.
Redstone torches set the wire in to the activated position, for reference. which means that oen can carry redstone "charge" through the tripwire.

This xp grinder has been designed in SMP by these german minecrafters for their own server. I just copied the design. There is one fault with it, sometimes the sticky pistons don't stick to their blocks thus removing a spawn place. If the grinder is running slow, that is probably why.
