Subject: What can I change to be able to withstand a shooting army?

My army list is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/forumid/14/postid/115301/view/topic/Default.aspx I won a few games with it and it does great against assault based armies. Tau on the other hand can rip it up real easily. It wasnt an easy win for the tau player but it was still a clear victory. Ideas I have had are: -Rely more on my traitor units for shooting... BS 3 isnt THAT bad -To get more traitors take out a marine squad and add lascannons (to replace heavy bolters) to the guard squads to make up for the lack of ranged damage output -Maybe a defiler used in conjunction with the basilisks or in place of one

Both your big mutant blocks are essentially counter-assault (since theyre slow) and in addition to that you have both thirster and a big squad of bloodletters. To me it seems youre relying on your opponent to play into your hands by assaulting you and letting your troops then attack those at leisure. Why do you have those huge units you yourself call "assault defence" when you could spend those points on ranged support or on faster assault units that could carry the fight to your enemy. Other than that, I've always thought the way to go with LatD is to have overwhelming numbers of mutants, that being their only big advantage. Oh, and they can have a Daemon Prince, a Greater Daemon and 3 leman russes in 1500pts! Dprince, GDaemon, 6 Mocu- CSM in rhino (icon+dhost+2plasmaguns), 2x3 gibberlings, 3x6 traitors (lascannons), 3 russes = 1335pts... Not a good list, but certainly an unexpected one

I never thought LatD could be cheesie I never thought about using the gibbering hordes as compulsory choices.
I think Ill stick with some zombies because I have had such good luck with them and they are just fun to model. I was also thinking about slowing my roll a little bit and using more of the current models I have.
HQ: Bloodthirster
Troops: 2 x 15 zombies 3 x 5 traitors with lascannons and Chaos Icons
Elites: 8 Bloodletters 8 csm in a rhino, 2 plasma, aspiring daemon vessel, chaos icon
Heavy support: 2 Basilisks 1 defiler
Too much ordinance? Im still keeping the zombies for counter assault and the traitors will be the fire base. 3 separate lascannons = 3 separate targets. What annoyed me about my list before was the slow daemon bomb aspect. The rhino is a quicker delivery method and 8 csm are pretty hardy. I dont have my codex handy but the points should make out to a little less than 1500.

The way to beat a shooty army isn't to outshoot them, it's to assault them. I never have a problem with tau, but that's also because I have two more assault units than you do. You want to beat a tau player? then you drop the oblits, get yourself a daemon prince, throw out some other things and get another squad of bloodletters. The key to beating each opponent is to find their weakness and exploit it, not to try to beat their strength.... especially with an army that is not supposed to be shooty.

I would seriously advice against using traitors as firebase... A unit of five traitors that takes only _2_ casualties checks Ld at 6. No matter in what cover they're in, they don't have any survivability. Also, with 3 light armour ordnance vehicles youre not gonna find enough cover for all of them -> you're going to lose 1-2 of those on the first few turns. So, if I were you and keen on keeping the basic list, I'd drop 1 basilisk and 2 traitor squads. You know, since defiler is not a Traitor Tank Unit, you can have one without Traitor Troops. That would give you plenty of points for allied las-plas squads or a daemon prince... Also, I'd seriously consider making the rhino squad smaller and/or paying extra for chosen and getting another asp.champ there with a fist.

An idea I had to fix the issue of the cowardly traitors was to put a dirge caster on the defiler.
CSM lascannons are expensive. I could get two 5-man traitors with lascannons for the normal csm las/plas squad. This is why I considered using the traitors as a fire base. Most of the time the lascannons are standing there shooting at the scarier units that are still further away and the bolters / plasma dont get to shoot. I also noticed people tend to ignore the traitors. They had heavy bolters before.
I guess what Im trying to do is to keep it competetive while not going over the top with cheese. In my Black Legion list I would use a DP / BT combo, las plas csm / oblits for firebase , defiler for ordinance and 8 berserkers and 8 bloodletters for assault.
I wonder if the berserkers would be better here in the rhino than an undivided squad. A more expensive daemonvessel but all of those guys getting 4 attacks on the charge would be nice.

At 1850, it's something around this... I don't have the exact points cost, as I'm not at home, but it should probabally be a little under 1850. It's got just about everything any army could ever need. Daemon Prince- -2 CCW's, Feel No Pain, Collar of Khorne, Personal Icon, Frag Grenades, Daemonic Stature, Daemonic Strength, Daemonic Aura, Daemonic Speed, Daemoninc Resilience, Daemonic Essence Bloodthirster- 8 Bloodletters- 8 Bloodletters- 6 Chaos Space Marines- -MOCU, Lascannon, Infiltrate Aspiring Champion -Daemonic Chains, Infiltrate 5 Chaos Space Marines- -Lascannon 5 Chaos Space Marines- -Lascannon 5 Traitors- -Lascannon, Infiltrate, Icon Bearer 5 Traitors- -Lascannon, Infiltrate, Icon Bearer 15 Mutants -Icon Bearer, CCW, Flamer Mutant Boss -Power Fist, CCW 15 Mutants -Icon Bearer, CCW Mutant Boss -Power Fist, CCW 10 Chaos Hounds Basilisk -Indirect Basilisk -Indirect

So no gifts to the mutants? I think I figured out why no one will play that list anymore, Angron.
