i was thinking of adding the targeting array to my tau stealth team , it seams expensive points wise , but 18 bs4 shots @ str5 thats tempting even @ 240pts. i'd like some input from someone who plays more than me & that shouldn't be hard.

There was a thread on this not too long ago:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/view/topic/forumid/18/postid/57797/Default.aspx

Basically, you get the same shooty power if you just buy more suits with the advantage of having more models.

If you still feel the need to have even more firepower you can always add drones to your squad that will gain stealth for free. 12-18 models all with strenth 5 weapons can put a hurt on a lot.

This is a great example of where play testing goes against theory hammer. Theory hammer suggests targetting arrays are a bad idea on stealths. Play testing suggests they are an excellent idea.

Why?  Just because they're easier to hide?

I advocate drones over arrays or more stealths.

I usually field a 8man squad of stealth in my games and find that when your rolling 24 dice for a strength 5 weapon, you don't really need the targetting array.

Personally, if I equip T.A.'s then I do it to broadsides and sometimes crisis suits as they are the ones with the high strength weapons therefore its preference for those weapons to hit home. When faced with 24 dice rolls then statistics are on your side.

Hope its helpful to you

Erm.... Stealths have a max squad size of 6...

Because they're easier to hide, because the enemy ignores units as a proportion of their models, rather than damage output, and because of the lowered variance.

Stealths with gun drones on the other hand are a bigger footprint and work the opposite way.

stealths with drones don't do the jsj thing with cover as much, rather they rely more on the stealth and the fact that if they do take some dmg it is on 10pts a model drones rather than the actual suits. Has worked fine for me, I run 3 units of
3 stealth/5 drone myself

Now THAT sounds very reasonable. I was thinking about 10+ model unit. Running the unit like this to me seems fine.

My only gripe with SS + GD units is that while they are more resilient (except against AP4 or higher pie plates) they are also much bigger. The GS base is a lot bigger than a SS base, so a unit of 5 GD and 3 SS is huge. This makes JSJ difficult and infiltrating in a good position nigh impossible.
Being able to infiltrate one's SS deep into your opponent's flank is what makes them so good, which is why I prefer 4 SS all with arrays. Small, fragile, but easy to hide and a good firepower as well.

Actually against ap4 weapons you lose equal amount of points while using drones...

Losing 3 10pts drones for each stealth that would otherwise die, that said you are more prone to going under half strength or having to take ld tests.

Generally I havent had trouble with infiltrate, sure I am normally doing hte 18" infiltrate and not the 12" but aslong as they are near an objective they get the job done and unless the enemy runs (who runs from stealths?) you still get 1st turn shooting.

4 SS with arrays is 160 pts in 4 3+ save guys. You can count me on the "no thanks" column for that purchase.

That's like buying a squad of devastators with lascannons but with no ablative wounds. Sure they JSJ, but it's not hard to kill the things if it's worth it. And at 160 pts they are definitely worth it.

Hmm, it's just that my opponents never worry about my stealths. I went to a tournament recently and was playing on the top tables (ie against good opponents, except for the first 2 games), and my stealths never died in the whole tournament. The stealths shot a bit, but they so often aren't threatening anything, unlike my hammerheads and crisis suits, that my opponents leave them alone (plus the whole "if I roll a 7 or less I can't shoot at all" thing scares them off).

Anyway that's my playtesting experience. Yours might be different, but so far, you have none.

Stealth suits are only worth attacking troops. If desperate then you could use them to attack really low armour vehicles such as a land speeder armour value of 10 etc. And as troops are rarely heavily armed then your gonna kill something with all them dice.
