OK NEW TOPIC!
I had the displeasure recently of having a conversation about this photograph of then Senator Obama (2007)
This was taken at a campaign BBQ in Texas.
The story behind the picture is this was taken during the playing of the National Anthem.
The argument was:
"Don't vote for this man, because he hates his country"
based of course, entirely on this picture.
You guys don't believe me, but the uneducated, racist, extreme right-wing people who refuse to even THINK for themselves that I have been talking about during this entire thread are everywhere in this part of the Country!

Obama's stance is: "when you say the pledge of allegiance, you put your hand over your heart. During the national anthem, you sing." As this was taught by his grandfather. This does not contradict any laws or anything. I wasn't ever taught to put my hand over my heart at the anthem, either, though I was for the pledge.... Singing the anthem to the best of your ability shows plenty of respect for it.
Heh. "Fortunately, I think the American people are smarter than some folks give them credit for."
I wonder if he can keep this level of optimism up even in his re-election after spending so much time with a stalled congress (First stalled due to the incompetency of his own party, then intentionally stalled due to the actions of the opposition)? His dramatically optimistic style was the reason why he had so much support before...

Right Melissa, you used your basic, educated, common-sense problem-solving skills to first gather the evidence, then weight the evidence, then make a decision.
I also pointed out the Snopes article to my right-wing friends and they refused to acknowledge that part. They still stubbornly stuck to their guns that "Obama hates his country"
-This is the type of person I am talking about, refusing to accept facts because if they did, then their precious comfortable opinions would have to be questioned.

mate... an honest question... do you really have right wing friends? or is this just a figure of speach? also i think peeps are way confused and desperate to make such a fuzz about the pose obama is standing in when listening/singing the anthem... well on a different matter... at the beginning of this thread you kind of asked about our thoughts about obama... no offence... but the first thing i had in mind was... he will never get president because of his skincolor... then when he finally won...i thought he won´t stay there for long... this is surley some man we will see getting sniped down... and... none of my fears and thoughts did actually happen...? i think that man has a certain power in him... and i think we should leave him be... the new election will eventually happen...and to tell you... the bushes did fare worse from an outsider point of view than anything obama is capable of... so i think in due time he will be an eight year president...

Republicans getting their act together
The current republican field is incredibly weak, romney is the only one polling close to Obama and he has floated by being quiet in the corner while is opponents destroy themselves. He'll falter once the spotlight is on him. Something would have to go wrong for Obama in a big way for this coming election to swing towards the republicans.

I have several and I'm not particularly conservative friendly from a political standpoint.

Do you remember that time that thing happened?
This is a bad thread and you should all feel bad
Oh yes, I have right-wing friends alright, especially a lot of them with the attitude of "America is #1 Herp Derp!" , unfortunately, that is about the extent of their ability to think intelligently, not for lack of ability, but mostly stubborness to tolerate skin color or any way of life other than their own.
Remember Vik, my hometown area of the US, is extremely conservative just like Bavaria was in your Country where the Nazi party gained a popular following.
The definition of Fascism is:
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
Now that describes the far right in the US perfectly to me, but if you told these people that they were voting for the same type of government that their grandfathers fought against in Europe, they would probably punch you in the face. Denial is such a sad thing.

this is a really frightening thing to realize that the person in front of you can be kind to you and your family and still be a "dumb" monster...it had happened to me a coupla times in work situation... comments that made my skin crawl from my back...you then see a totally different face.... on my part i cut of the discussion then and simple left them there... even tho they were my colleagues... and up to then i was quite on good terms with them...if the whole environment of your´s is peppered with such characters i imagine it is a very difficult life to live...
No, the Republicans are a political party. I am not talking about political parties here. I am talking about individual political philosophies who are far-right. The fact that the Republican party generally gets these individual votes is a different matter. The Republicans have been in power most of my entire life, they are not Fascists by party philosophy.
Most Americans that identify with the Republican Party are conservative, but not extreme-right. It's the growing number of far-right individuals potentially becoming future leaders of the Republican Party that really scares me, especially if the party implodes on National TV and splits like it appears to be doing.

No, they think they are preserving some non-existent "old-fashioned glory days" that just never existed in the first place.
Why bother reading actual history when you can get a custom-tailored history that is more to your liking?

That is just handguns, shotguns and hunting rifles don't have to be registered in Ohio. Rednecks in Ohio think Obama is going to come to their house and take their guns away. Some talk show host on AM radio told them so.
