I'm not buying the starter set, but I'm toying with the idea of an army of nothing but empire calvary. I'm waiting until the end of the six weeks until I get a better picture.

General on a Griffon leading a demigryph army sounds fabulous! Hope we'll get demigryph mount for generals. You can see a young griffon mini on the photos of Sigmarines (next to the lord on foot), so griffons are still around in the new world, so it's not improbable.

Is that the release period for AoS? Six weeks?

I am really excited about AOS.
For those worried about the lack of strategy I wouldn't worry to much...List building and synergy is incredibly important now.
With units providing benefits to other units; army construction and proper deployment is very important.
The lack of points and the BS about the screaming bell combo are coming from a childish place -- I think the true most important rule is don't be such a dick

I would have to agree with you on several of your points. I had initially been upset by the change in list building but after putting a few together I've found it entertaining. And as for the matter of people bringing lists to smash the competition at the expense of fun, that has been the case long before AoS. Even recently the release of Eldar had people in a frenzy about how they would simply table every opponent foolish enough to stand against them. Many, claiming to be leaving the game behind because GW doesn't care about balance, doesn't care about the tournament player, etc.. It's the same claims with every new release, and yet the game goes on. The community usually adopts checks and balances that brings people in line, or they learn to counter supposed unbalanced threats. There is great potential for abuse in AoS, but not playing with dicks will go a long way towards enjoying a game. I advise people to give it a chance as I did, even though I was very pessimistic...the rules are free, you have nothing to lose (except perhaps your negative perception of the game). If you don't like it, as I'm sure some will not, there's always 8th. If the game is truly as bad as you think it is, there shouldn't be a shortage of people to play with.

@Gridge: To add to that, the type of bases you have no longer matter either, so it's not like everyone will have to rebase everything.

I think that he is speculating that by the end of six weeks, we'll have seen releases for more factions and thus have an idea of what to expect from the game beyond the starter set.

Pretty sure Empire are going the way of the dodo. So far all the promo pictures of AoS have only showed Empire models with the CELESTIAL keyword. Not sure the new "Free People" faction is going to have organised soldiers like state troopers and Knights...
I'm an Empire player so this makes me sad.

October. The first lot of AoS releases is meant to run too then 40k will get some releases before it changes to a mix of the two. Supposedly anyway

Letting the dust settle a bit, I do want to play, I'm on Twitter with hundreds of gamers playing it, leaving posts etc etc. I've heard nothing but positive! I was, repeat was in disgust when I heard a rumor about maybe losing the chance to play my current armies in the new system, and stoked to hear they're not abandoned.
Most likely I'll get the rules after they are out alone, heard a rule book is coming out soon...
So yes I'm going to get it, hopefully without the new miniatures just my current armies.

There is no rulebook. The only books coming out will be campaign/sourcebooks. Which may or may not include the 4 page rules that are out already

Nothing about AoS so far has me interested in actually spending additional money on the product.
However, I'm willing to look at whatever they release going forward and could potentially change my mind.

Just read some of the really stupid rules such as this High Elf rule for the Dragon Host : "Ancient Dignity: Dragons are ancient and prideful creatures, and the Elves that
ride them are no less haughty, but from such nobility and dignity stems an inner
strength. If, during your entire hero phase, you can maintain a dignified (even
arrogant) composure and not smile, smirk or laugh regardless of your opponent’s
antics, you may re-roll all hit rolls of 1 made for models in a Dragon Host until
your next hero phase."
Ther is also an Empire model that gives you buffs if you have a bigger mustache than your opponent and at any time if you kneel whilst using settra, you lose instantly.

Here in the UK AoS is out tomorrow. I'll be buying it, after having had a great time playing a demo earlier this afternoon. Though I don't know if it's truly for 'everyone' who likes wargaming, and actually spending the hard-earned dosh on this thing does seem a tad risky, even if it is pretty good value (within the hobby, that is) for the models. Thing is, I'm planning a Khorne Daemonkin army, so if AoS doesn't work out, I'll be doing some reconditioning.
On the whole, though, I think its pretty exciting to start something like this, with such promise, at its inception. Automatically Appended Next Post: Chaos Rising wrote:Just read some of the really stupid rules such as this High Elf rule for the Dragon Host : "Ancient Dignity: Dragons are ancient and prideful creatures, and the Elves that

I quite like the idea of these rules, if not the application of these particular ones, but only because it's now possible to picture the cheesemongers having to go further than ever before for the best buffs.

Not until I see what the new range looks like, im all for making all models larger as long as they shift the aesthetic. As mentioned they seem to be pushing the Diablo look which is fine if the other armies follow, I don't want just round based fantasy because what would have been the point in killing fantasy for it.
If the models look like:
Tomb king leader:
demon lord:
Ork lord:
I'd give it a shot.

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. |
