Lakes are difficult terrain, so it a skimmer stops over one it must make a test to see if it crashes. Does this seem a little odd to anyone else? My gaming circlehas always played it that it should be treated like clear terrain. How does everyone deal with it?

Ummm no.

Skimmers always end their move hovering OVER terrain (difficult or impassable) and do not take dangerous terrain tests (see page 61 and the rules summary in the back of the rulebook for details).

Also, lakes (being "deep water"  should be classified as impassable terrain per the rulebook (although you can always decide otherwise if you and your opponent want).

 

It would be interesting if someone claimed to be hiding his Hammerhead in it with Sensor Spines...

The wording for Sensor Spines is terrain feature, any terrain feature...

Obviously i'm just playing the devil's advocate here as anyone trying this should have his army smashed, but even so, I can't see a RAW argument against claiming one's Sensor Spine skimmer as obscured in a lake.

And Why couldn't someone hide a skimmer, especially one that can survive deep space travel, under water? If it is enclosed and 'airtight' it is watertight. And presumably with its 'anti grav thrusters' or what have you it'll work jsut fine in a pond.

This isn't necessarily true.

The engineering involved in making a vessel able to withstand a vaccuum (higher pressure inside than out) is, as I understand it, quite different to that required for a vessel able to withstand being underwater (higher pressure outside than in).

Having said that, an armoured vehicle would presumably be strong enough to hold up to a short dunking at a shallow depth.

The engines are an entirely different proposition. Anyone done a study on the effects of fluid immersion on alien anti-gravity units?

Yeah, there's more to being in water than the pressure associated with it. Pressure isn't much of a factor until you start to get hundreds of feet down. But even if you're an inch below the surface, you're still very, very wet. Just because something can survive in space, that doesn't mean it's waterproof. Even if the ship's core is airtight, there could be external systems that don't respond well to water.

For example, the cabin of a 747 is airtight and pressurized. But if you took a 747, submerged it in water for an hour, then took it back out, I bet it wouldn't work. At all. Even if you took a very large hairdryer to it.

On the other hand, it is called a "Hammerhead" or "Devilfish." It really should be able to swim, right?

Well, 'Hammerhead' and 'Devilfish' are the human names for them.

If you build a little steel gadget for reshaping roofing nails into miniature relicas of the second Death Star, and I call it a 'Steak Sandwich' does that mean it should be edible...?

Damn, I REALLY feel stupid for asking the original question. I have only played a handful of games in Forth Edition, so i still had thrid edition in mind. I'll just blame it on being extra-tired and hope you guys buy it. I hope no one I know read this post.
